Grow Up, Tony Phillips is a Halloween-set comedy written and directed by Emily Hagins (Pathogen, My Sucky Teen Romance).

Update #7: The AJ Bowen Experience

AJ Bowen
AJ Bowen

Every time it seems like we’re out of updates, another one presents itself. So we apologize for the frequent updates (we swear it’ll be over soon, whether we want it to be or not), but AJ Bowen, one of the first actors to ever join Grow Up, Tony Phillips, has offered up a truly one-of-a-kind package.

But before we get to that, here a few things you need to know about AJ: He’s an incredible, chef-grade cook. He’s a super film geek and loves to talk about movies. He creates mixtapes of music he thinks his character(s) might listen to.

So here’s what AJ’s volunteered: A home-cooked meal, followed by a live-commentary of one of his movies, plus your own copy of one of his character’s mixtapes. We said it was a one-of-a-kind package! As for stipulations, L.A. or Austin are the possible areas (travel not included), and the dinner/live-commentary will have to take place within the year at a mutually agreed upon time.

Thanks again for sticking with us. The swell of support, especially in these final hours, has been overwhelming.

Update #6: One More Cast and a Final Reward

Caleb Barwick
Caleb Barwick

Well, it turns out we’re not done with the updates just yet. We’ve got one more casting announcement to make. Caleb Barwick has joined the project, taking on one of the last remaining core roles in the film. When Caleb and Emily first met, she instantly knew he’d be perfect for Grow Up, Tony Phillips, and we could not agree more.

And finally, we’re getting down to the eleventh hour, but we do have a new pledge level to add. As if Barbara Crampton wasn’t already awesome enough, she’s graciously offered up several phone chats with her as a reward. And if getting to pick the brain of one of the coolest genre icons of all time wasn’t enough, Barbara will also include a copy of her original Re-Animator script with her notes inside! (Note: The chat must take place within the next year at a mutually agreed upon time.)

Thanks again for all your support and exposure. It’s been unbelievably encouraging and means the world to us.

Update #5: More Cast and Crew, Plus the Final Push

Byron Brown
Byron Brown

As of this writing, there are less than 44 hours between us and the deadline. We've come so very, very close, and we simply could not have gotten nearly this far without the humbling generosity of so many of you. Saying thanks doesn’t even begin to cover it, but hopefully a thank you by way of making a helluva movie will. And we think we can do just that.

We don’t have any new rewards to unveil today, but we do have a few cast and crew updates to announce. First, on the casting front, it’s our pleasure to announce that Byron Brown has joined the film. Those who follow the Old Murder House Theatre may recognize Byron from their stage productions, while Fantastic Fest-ers may recognize him from this year’s The Quiet Girl’s Guide to Violence. He’s a very talented, naturally funny man, and he’s perfect for his role.

We’re also thrilled to announce that we will once again be working with some of our favorite collaborators. Our Cinematographer is Gray Haddock, who has worked on every Arcanum Pictures project so far, great and small, and is one of our best secret weapons. You can check out a sample of his wide-ranging work at his official site. And on the editing front, we’ll be relying on the indispensable Luke Mullen and Shane Gibson (both of My Sucky Teen Romance) to turn our Halloween comedy dreams into an actual movie. No pressure, guys.

This will probably be our last update on the Kickstarter before it ends at 10am on Sunday, October 14th. We can’t thank everyone enough for pledging, following along, and helping spread the word. The support we’ve gotten, especially the closer we get to the finish line, has been incredibly invigorating. We’re full steam now, and it will probably get down to a photo finish, but we can do this.

Thank you.

Update #4: The Mondo Scoop

It's getting down to the end, but we're not losing confidence. I apologize in advance if we keep adding reward tiers, but the generosity of Austin cornerstones continues to surprise us. We've got a new, one-time-only reward to offer. Mondo, the masters of boutique movie posters, have offered up a very, very special deal: The scoop on an upcoming poster of your choice!

With this pledge there will be no need to monitor the Mondo twitter feed for the sale time. No need to constantly refresh the website before your desired poster sells out. You'll simply let them know 24 hours in advance, and the poster is yours. Now, the cost of the poster and shipping are included in the pledge, but there are some stipulations. It is subject to some exclusions (like event exclusive posters) and must be redeemed within a year.

Thanks again for all your support, and a very special thanks to Mondo for giving us this very rare opportunity.

Update #3: A New Reward - Custom-Painted Shoes

We’re thrilled to be able to add a new pledge level and reward: custom-painted shoes created by local Austin artist Toni Taylor-Salisbury (of Peregrine Paints). Simply choose hi or low tops, and pick two designs of your choice, and you’ll get yourself a pair of one-of-a-kind canvas shoes (Converse Chuck Taylors, to be specific). Don’t worry about listing shoe size and design choice now, we’ll be in touch about all of that after the campaign ends. Check out this gallery for more samples of some of Toni's previous work.

Note: This reward is not included at higher levels, but if you’d like it, please adjust your pledge accordingly.

Update #2: More Cast and Crew, Plus a New Reward

Tony Vespe, AJ Bowen, Barbara Crampton, Devin Bonnee, Jamie Landau, Katie Folger
Tony Vespe, AJ Bowen, Barbara Crampton, Devin Bonnee, Jamie Landau, Katie Folger

Our second update has arrived! We're very excited to announce two new additions to the cast and crew. Behind the scenes we have the incredibly talented Griffon Ramsey on board as our Production Designer. She'll be bringing the world of our love letter to Halloween to life, and we can't wait to see what she cooks up. In front of the camera will be Katie Folger (Zero Charisma), who rounds out our core teenager cast (as pictured in the photo above).

We recently held our first group rehearsal, marking the first time Tony, Katie, and Devin were all in room together. Seeing the trio working through scenes was, to say the least, a complete light bulb moment for all of us, proving this is not just a movie we want to make, but a movie we need to make.

And finally, we have a new, one-of-a-kind reward tier to offer. The Austin-based production company Rooster Teeth have very generously allowed us to offer a walk-on voice role in Season 11 of Red vs. Blue, the longest running web series of all time. So if you're a big RvB fan, please do look for it in the sidebar on the right to learn more.

Thank you so very, very much for all your support so far. We know the days are going fast and the goal line still seems very far off, but we're not giving up, and we hope you won't, either.

Update #1

Our first update has arrived and it's a big one! We are very proud to announce that AJ Bowen (The Signal, You're Next), Barbara Crampton (Re-Animator, From Beyond), Jamie Landau (in his feature film debut), and Devin Bonnée and Tony Vespe (both of My Sucky Teen Romance) have all joined the cast. The amount of talent and warmth each of them brings to the table is positively overwhelming.

Additionally, we've added a new, separate $50 reward level for a limited edition poster that will be created by the incredible artist Jay Shaw (of Mondo posters fame). This poster will only ever be available as part of this Kickstarter campaign, so this is your only time to get one. Note: Jay is working on the poster currently, so we don't have a final one to share just yet, but you can check out a sampling of his poster work below.

Finally, we've added two other new reward tiers. The first is a $15 Halloween tote bag customized with the film's title, and the second is an Associate Producer credit, which is available at the $3,000 pledge level.

Thanks for all your support, the original info is all below.

About the Film

Grow Up, Tony Phillips may take place on Halloween, but it has nothing to do with horror movies and everything to do with that crystalline moment in time everyone has when they realize life marches forward and they’re the youngest they’ll ever be. It’s a coming-of-age story, but this isn’t an indie drama about a boy becoming a man. It’s a comedy about Tony Phillips, a guy who doesn’t think childhood passions should have an expiration date.

This won't be teenage life as viewed from an adult's nostalgia-tinted rear view mirror. This is in every sense a teen's story told from the perspective of actual teenagers, both behind and in front of the camera. That means no hyper-meta dialogue, no larger-than-life scenarios, and no over-the-top style. This is all straight from Emily's heart.

About the Production

Grow Up, Tony Phillips is the fourth feature film from 19-year-old Emily Hagins. Her first, undertaken at the impossible age of 11, was Pathogen, a zombie film; second, the ghostly The Retelling; and third was the vampire comedy My Sucky Teen Romance, which was released on DVD/Blu-ray/iTunes/VOD through Dark Sky Films on September 4th, 2012.

Arcanum Pictures is an Austin-based producing team founded by Peter Hall and Paul Gandersman working in narrative short and feature films, as well as commercials.

We are currently in pre-production on Grow Up, Tony Phillips, with principal photography set to begin in and around Central Texas in late Fall of 2012.

How the Money Will be Used

The funds we're hoping to raise are only a part of the budget and will allow us to cover the assets we have yet to finance. Yes, it’s a high number, but we didn’t just pull it out of thin air. The entire production has been budgeted and scheduled from start to finish. We know what it is going to take to bring this film to its audience.

First and foremost, we need your help to buy us time. Not metaphorically, mind you -- We will be shooting in the Fall of 2012, but how long that shoot will be is directly proportional to our budget. We need you to help us carve out as much shooting time as possible.

Then it comes down to crew, production design and location. Being able to pay actors and artists their working rates isn’t a luxury, it’s the way it should be. And considering we'll be giving Central Texas more of a Halloween-worthy Fall than it actually has, we're going to need all the help we can get.

We have an amazing team assembled that we have been lucky enough to work with on many projects already and feel more than confident in their talents to help make this film a winner. As for what we'll be shooting on, that’s easy: A RED Epic.

Why We Need Your Help

Filmmaking is a collaborative process, and that begins long before anyone even sets foot on set. For us, part of that process is community involvement. Some films are made in a vacuum and no one knows anything until they appear out of thin air. Grow Up, Tony Phillips is not that kind of a movie, and we simply wouldn't be able to make it, both creatively and financially, without the kind of film community we know is out there; one that understands the landscape of filmmaking is changing and that it's easier than ever to get involved and help shape the way we not only watch films, but make them as well.
