Who are We?
Arcana Creations is a small hobby-publisher that has produced material for the Castles & Crusades roleplaying game from Troll Lord Games, as well as material for Swords & Wizardry from Frog God Games. Arcana Creations has collaborated with other publishers such as Brave Halfling Publishing in the past, but is currently focused on growing and increasing product output in 2017. Mother of Mortals is the first novel to be published in what we hope to be the first of many. With this goal in mind, all non-gaming produced books will be published under the imprint of Arcana Elements.
What is the Book About?
Mother of Mortals: A Tale of the Nepheleid is a stand-alone novel centered on the Greek goddess Hera. The story is set in the not-too-distant future where humanity is making preparations to set off to colonize the stars with the Earth having been sufficiently compromised by the ravages of climate change. Hera, once patron of many a hero, is forced to confront her own past and chooses to defy Zeus, her husband and ruler of all the gods of starry Olympus, in order to safeguard herself, those she has taken under her charge, as well as the rest of humanity. Alliances are made and truths are revealed as Hera ends up becoming the hero of her own story.
The book is a character driven drama that draws a lot from classical Greek mythology while expanding on some lesser known myths or even adding to the tapestry of tale and song. There are science fiction elements and the book is classified as Fantasy / Sci-Fi, but it is soft science fiction whenever these elements are discussed.
In addition to this, it is important to mention that the book is not intended for a younger audience. Both the content and level or writing are intended for a more mature and well-read audience.

What do We Need From You?
As this is our first novel, we want it to be a success. Most of the work on Mother of Mortals is already complete and we decided to turn to Kickstarter to help cover expenses related to the cost of bringing this book to print as well as to fund an initial small print run for conventions and the official book launch event.
At this stage, the writing is done and the work has already gone through an initial round of editing. We have already received the proofs and the book is undergoing another round of edits as we work towards a final proof prior to release. In addition to that, we have selected a handful of dedicated readers that are providing us with the feedback we need to fine tune the book for the general audience.
The rewards range from a digital copy of the novel with the main reward being the production of the softcover book. The book is approximately 336 pages (still subject to change as further edits are made) in a 8.5" x 5.5" format. These formats will be available in distribution.
Each softcover book will have a MSRP of $16 USD where as the cost of a digital copy will be $6 USD. This works out to approximately $21 and $8 CAD, respectively.
Additionally there will be a limited run of hardcover books with dust jacket. They will be signed and numbered and will not be reproduced beyond the planned run of 32 copies. Only 30 copies are available in this campaign. A softcover copy is also included with each hardcover.
One final oddity is offer of one of the proof copies. It is a highlighted and annotated copy and will be signed *and* personalized by the author. While close to being a finished product, it is still far from that. It is riddled with typos with other differences which will become obvious when compared to what will be the final text. Naturally, a final copy of the book will also be included as part of this unique reward.
Understanding full well that taste in literature is a subjective thing, we have decided to offer the first chapter of the book for free. It should be enough to give an idea of what the style is like and help you, the potential reader and backer of this project, to decide if this might be to your liking or not.
Please feel free to share this preview with others whom you feel might like to read it and possibly be interested in the book.
Risks and challenges
With the book already written and most of the editing complete, we do not foresee any issues in fulfillment or expect any. Electronic copies will be distributed via email and all the small trade format books will be drop-shipped direct from the printers.
We are using CreateSpace, a reputable Amazon company, for the printing of the softcover books to minimize any complications.
The limited run of Hardcovers will take more time since the batch will be sent to us first so that the author can sign these before we individually mail these out. We are looking at a different printer to do this run but we feel this should not present any significant delays beyond what we have already planned for.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
