About

Our long-term goal is to establish a global network for monitoring the sounds of nature by installing thousands of acoustic monitoring stations in protected areas, research stations, ecolodges, city parks, and backyards around the world. Society does an excellent job of monitoring weather globally, and making this information available to anyone with an internet connection. It is now time to do the same with biodiversity by establishing biodiversity “weather” stations everywhere. Real-time audio recordings and open access to the recording archives will be an invaluable source of information for studying the fauna. We have already lost many species, and the populations of others are declining. With this project we will improve biodiversity monitoring, which is essential for conservation activities to help reduce future biodiversity loss.

Furthermore, it will be fun. Why not start your day by listening to the sounds of nature from around the world?

Expand ARBIMON monitoring stations around the world

The Automated Remote Biodiversity Monitoring Network (ARBIMON) is a novel combination of environmental monitoring hardware (android devices used as recorders) and cloud-computing audio analytical software used to automate data acquisition, data management and data analysis.

For the last 10 years, we have been developing the technology for this Kickstarter project, and for last eight years we have had different versions of the ARBIMON biodiversity monitoring station in Sabana Seca, Puerto Rico.

Click here to listen to the last recording from our Sabana Seca, Puerto Rico monitoring station.

The goal of this Kickstarter project is to establish acoustic monitoring stations with our partners in Costa Rica, Peru, and Madagascar.

When we pass our Kickstarter goal, you will help us decide where the next recording stations will be located by voting (1 vote per $ pledged) from our list of future sites.

The major features of the ARBIMON II Bio-acoustics analysis platform include:

  • Cloud base platform for storing, managing, sharing, and analyzing your recordings
  • Tools to create a project, add sites, and add species from our global list of birds, amphibians, and mammals
  • Project administration features (e.g. add users and assign their roles)
  • Easily upload recordings from within your project or using our new desktop uploader app
  • The visualizer and thumbnail feature allow you to quickly scan through thousands of recordings
  • In the visualizer you can add tags, annotate the presence/absence of species, extract examples of calls for creating models, and assign the sources of all sounds using the soundscape composition tool
  • In the analytical component you can create species-specific models and conduct soundscape analyses

Risks and challenges

Hardware

Different versions of our ARBIMON acoustic biodiversity monitoring station have been operating over the last eight years. The present version has been operating in the field in Sabana Seca, Puerto Rico for approximately one year. In this system, we collect 1 minute recordings every 10 minutes 24 hours/day for a total of 144 1-minute recordings per day. During the last year, we have collected ~50,000 recordings from this site, but some recordings were lost (<5%). The major reason for the loss of recordings was cellular network overload, which occurred around the New Year holidays. To reduce this type of loss, we have programmed the system so that recordings that are not successful sent through the cellular network in real-time are stored locally and they are sent later.

Our long-term goal is to have thousands of acoustic monitoring stations around the world, including sites with extreme weather conditions. Fortunately, our design, which includes a small solar panel, an Android phone (recorder + communications) in a waterproof case, and a microphone, has held up well in harsh conditions. The most vulnerable component is the microphone, but it can easily be replaced every 6 to 12 months at a minimal cost to ensure high quality recordings.

Additional challenges include the installation of the system in remote sites and forested sites. Although most sites will take advantage of cellular network to move recordings in real-time from the field to the internet, this feature is not essential. In remote sites without cellular coverage, we can store recordings on a memory card, and then upload the recordings to the system every week or every month. Another challenge is locating the solar panel in areas of full sun. In forested areas this will require a tower that extends above the canopy. Fortunately, we used a very small solar panel that can be easily installed.

Software

The present version of the ARBIMON cloud based platform has been functioning well for the last two years. We are continuously improving the platform, mainly adding new analytical tools, and this occasionally has introduced minor problems. These problems have been immediately fixed by ARBIMON’s fulltime software developer, Giovany Vega.

Long-term sustainability of the network

To ensure the long-term sustainability of the network we will:
- Continue to improve and expand the ARBIMON platform. Specifically, as part of the Kickstarter project we will develop a new interface focusing on interests of citizen scientists, birdwatchers, and ecotourists.
- Actively promote the participation of more sites in the ARBIMON network. We expect that a successful Kickstarter project will increase the interest of others to join ARBIMON and establish new stations in other reserves, research stations, ecolodges, city parks, museums, universities, and backyards.
- Work to reduce costs of data acquisition and storage so that more organizations will be able to participate in the network.
- Create an advisory board, including representatives from partner institutions and outside experts to help define strategies to ensure the long-term sustainability of the network.
