*Due to a publishing error the early bird pledge has accidently been duplicated under a different name and cannot be removed. This is very much to the benefit of backers!*
*In 20 minutes we made the Goal! Thank you!*
*In the 6 days of this campaign the number of maps currently available has increased from 100 to 150*
*I am getting better at composite maps (see coachhouse, inns and wizard tower below) which is where you take several buildings, textures and features from many different pictures and arrange them. Gold backers will receive more maps this in future as it adds value to the images and I can also make them any size*
While traveling around 4 continents I carried a drone. I took photos and videos to use as maps in my own games. When I got home I saw just how amazingly effective this is at creating an atmosphere in RPG games. It turns out the landscapes used in fantasy movies, the places Tolkien used as inspiration, tropical beaches, industrial refineries, slums, jungle villages and deserts offer a lot to the imagination. The detail is so interactive.
I want to share these images and videos with you. Around half are 4000x2250 (9megapixels) and the newer pictures are at 5472x3078 (17megapixels). The video maps are 4k. If you back the project you get 100 edited maps and around 1000 raw drone photos which you can use for textures for your own maps. There are some video maps too. Though this will take some post production to work out which ones are usable, probably only 5 so far.
Backers will get all my current photos and videos.
With funds raised over the next few years I intend to start populating and curating of a huge online catalogue of photo and video maps which gold backers will have full access to. I would like to raise support for:
> New drone hardware for higher resolution images
> Plane tickets to different countries to find a wider variety of terrains
> Training, accreditation and insurance in more countries allowing insurance and commercial photography of areas prohibited to the general public
> Post production software allowing the use of many more raw videos I have in stock (videos become far easier to produce, loop, and are of greater stability and quality with high end post production software)
> Other areas of photography, diving for underwater maps, caving for dungeons, microscope photography for surreal environments and radio telescope images for space battles.
> Backers around the world can provide a database of thousands of potential sites I can travel to and photograph. Local knowledge is key.
> Open up the platform to user collaboration, submitting adventures, modifying maps and so on.
ACHIEVED IN 20 MINUTES
£500: - I will finish post production and curation of my current stock of images which you will receive almost immediately after the Kickstarter ends. All backers will get access to a dropbox file with around 150 edited, interesting, detailed maps to be used in RPG encounters or as war-game maps. They will also get access to around 1500 raw drone images and videos.
£2,000: More training, accreditation and licensing allowing me to legally commercially photograph more countries and be insured to photograph populated areas such as cities, markets, roads, bridges, large dockyards, castles, theme parks, anywhere the public gather in large numbers. At present I need to get permission from various organisations for these shots which is hard (or impossible) to obtain. Gold backers will receive all images in future that are obtained with this licensing, potentially thousands of maps over a duration of years. It'll take a while to edit but it'll be worth it as the library currently lacks densely populated scenes.
£3,000: Better video stabilization software. At present only 1 in 5 videos that I take are usable because the drone is not perfectly stable in high wind. Better editing software would increase the number of videos that can be used from my current stock, these would be available to all backers. Gold backers will receive all images in future that are obtained with this hardware (likely hundreds).
£3,000+: Every extra penny will be spent on traveling or equipment to take a greater number of higher quality pictures. Whether I invest in equipment, plane tickets, training, licensing or a mixture will depend on backers. I will send out a survey at the end of the campaign asking what you want me to invest in and asking for suggestions of places you know I could visit and photograph. The results of this survey will guide me in the coming months and years building this online library. Gold backers will receive all images in future that are obtained with this money.
I want to include volcanoes, lava flow, arctic environments, disused military installations, battle ships and cold war missile silos, dystopian Chernobyl, pyramids, ancient sites, glaciers, crashed aircraft, meteorite craters, geysers, movie sets, derelict asylums, reenactment sites. I would like to buy rights to radio telescope images that can be used for space combat. There are several photos I have from caving trips that I will throw into the dropbox but I could buy battery powered portable lighting and an SLR to capture many more underground images on my travels. I could buy a powerful microscope as some of the stuff you find in that world is as alien and transdimensional as anything HP Lovecraft could think up. I would like to go diving again in the clearest waters to take pictures of wrecks and coral, splice them together and have wide aquatic environments. We will work out together what is needed.
Our next Kickstarter is a TV stand that converts into a games table or desk. An acetate film with printed squares or hexes can be added to aid gameplay and an acrylic or glass sheet can be placed on top to offer a larger table area. It takes TVs up to 60" and 30kg.
My brother and I run apurpleturkey.com and a fabrications company that will produce these stands. The table design is already patented and will be available worldwide. We will be launching TurnTable soon after the rewards of this Kickstarter are fulfilled (within hours or days of the end of this campaign). All those who back RPG Drone Maps will receive notification about the launch date to ensure they get access to the early bird.
Risks and challenges
I have experience in far more complicated projects and kickstarters than this. If I die before the end of the campaign I won't be able to finish post production on all of the images but you'll still get most of them. Relating to the stretch goals, if I have an unexpected life event it might mean it takes me a while before I can spare the time to travel round the world again but I love traveling, I love RPGs, photos and flying, I would be doing all this even if I wasn't funded to do it, though I would be doing it much slower of course. This isn't a chore for me. I want to do it. This is probably as safe and risk free as a kickstarter can be.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
