Update #27

User Interface Screens

We finally got our User Interface PSD's in and while Matt is working on actually implementing them into the client so we can shoot a video to show the UI in action, I've taken them and created a couple screens on existing screenshots just to show you what they will look like. We are working on the Crafting UI as well but we wont be releasing that one for a while as it will give away the crafting mechanics we dont want to release yet. :)

I know this UI is a bit derivative but it may change as we get closer to development. I'm personally not sold on the dragons on the sides myself, but we'll see what your feedback is like before we make any major changes.

i trust in your ability to make a decent ui, youve been around long enough and seen enough to know what works and what doesnt, that, coupled with some suggestions here and i dont see how it could go wrong, what i do have a strong opinion about is, not letting addons wreck this game, i hated them in wow, and hated the facted blizzard let anyone and his dog make them, i dont mind a map addon, but nothing that alters gameplay, i came here to play "your" game, not a bastardised version of your game. im not saying that you will be doing that, just strongly suggesting against it :)

Top Left: Don't need a picture of myself. Way too many bars to look at, and they aren't labeled from what I can tell. I'm not colorblind, but if a person was, he/she would not be able to tell them apart.

Action Bar: Don't care for fancy things like the dragons on toolbars. Would prefer the map to be bottom right, instead of in the middle. But I do agree with some posters here that allowing it to be customized (at some point, if not now), is best. That way, people can move things to where it works best for them.

Don't see the need for the menu button to be as big as it is. An icon would do. And not sure of the purpose of the lag button, but it is pretty prominent. Would I need this button often? An icon might do here too. The bag icons seem tiny in comparison.

The picture of the bag on the inventory box is not needed, or could be smaller, so it better fits into the inventory box space. I was surprised by Cliff Carpenter's comments. I didn't like the look fo the Runescape inventory panel on first look. But when I compared it to the WoW pic, the Runescape panel was much easier to comprehend! Thanks for the comparison, Cliff!

Pretty much agree with Blindshot, I just hope to god, you're not going to make the game play as WoW - where you just click the icon (activate a skill) and the character does the fighting for you while you sip your coffee.. I much prefer it when it's actually possible to dodge and block things by the player skills, and when the attacks don't automatically home in on you when the attack animation shows a clear miss.
IMHO there's perhaps a bit too many status bars up there, plus I think it's redundant to look at your characters face - remove the character icon all together, replace the Menu and Lag buttons with some of the more important status bars (like health and mana), activate the dragons (length of fire works as some of the secondary status bars, their physical condition - fat/skinny - could signify hunger/thirst) and the hue/saturation of the screen could indicate stamina or the like.
In addition, if you're planning on making WoW style cooldown skills (like those icons would indicate a bit), it'd be nice if the 0-9 hotkeys (I assume the upper row of icons) would automatically get replaced by the icon/skill from the lower row when the main icon/skill is on cooldown. (Eg, your main skill's hotkeyed on 1 - you activate it once, it goes on cooldown, you press 1 again it activates a secondary skill from the lower row and changes back to the main skill as soon as that's cooled down.)

I like the character sheet and the general look overall :) But a few questions.

Will the UI be moveable or will you consider letting curseforge(I think that's the site) people do addons? I like the dragons, but they seem a big larrge. Maybe it's just the resolution on your screen; however, I think I'd rather see a small menu bar like this: http://www.tecomputing.com/downloads/EQ2_000004.png (look at the bottom left and right).

I like that its pretty clean and modern. Dare I say WOW'ish. Wow had great interfaces.

It throws me off that Menu and Lag buttons are more evident than your current health. I think you health indicator should be more visible. Right now the call to actions are Menu and Lag and really those aren't to be focused on in gameplay.

I like the map in the middle, kind of a focal point and it's not on the standard top right so frees up some space to get more immersed into the wonderful environments. Wish I could see a up to scale zoom of these screens!

I like the profile view, looks there's alot of slots to cover! I'm not so sure about the transparent background on the stats. I'd either go solid or lower the opacity to get some more contrast on that text.

Just some feedback, but i like where it's going :) with most sandboxes we don't get treated with nice UI's :P

Also I don't think the borders are too thick if I look at the ratio of the screen. A UI scale meter in the Options is always awesome. I normally scale mine down to take up less space..

I'm fairly indifferent to the default interface. However, I suggest giving the UI as much customization as possible. Things like movable, resizable interface elements goes a long way to making the game just right for each person. That would likely include transparency options and being able to remove interface art.

All that said... you all know what the game play entails and what we need on the interface, and the screenshots look excellent

I have never liked the use of art in my UI such as huge borders that take up screen real-estate.
My eye sight is not too good so the first thing I do is install addons if the game allows it that gets rid of any fancy art stuff in the UI so I can scale them up and still have plenty of screen left with out it being 15% borders and dragons and backgrounds.
I hope we can merge our backpacks into one window can get rid of that border and scale the UI and Text.

      5 health (etc.) bars?
The dragons book-ending the action bar is a bit of a throwback to vanilla WoW but I think they're cute so I won't mind them. Unless you start animating the flames.
And if the mini-map (and other frames) was movable that'd be very handy.
      Looks great! :)

One thing I really liked from Runescape was that all items in the inventory/bank "stood on their own". What I mean by this, is that they weren't contained in a box like WoW's interface, that usually only showed part of the item. Here's two comparison pictures:

      Runescape: http://img105.imageshack.us/img105/8108/surveyinventory8fa.png

      WoW: http://www.blogcdn.com/wow.joystiq.com/media/2011/11/bagsearch.jpg

I would love to see you guys have it look more like Runescape's inventory, as it makes me feel like they really are swords and a necklace, and not just an overly special-effected thumbnail like WoW is.

I really like the UI. A lot nicer than I was expecting, to be honest...

In terms of where everything is positioned, especially the mini-map, that would require some play-testing to know if it works or not.

But as for the aesthetics and the dragons, I really like it.
