Penelope Miller (Penny), an 18 year old girl, moves back to the city she grew up in to attend college. 

 When she first arrives, she finds lodging with the Salviatis, a family who has been friends with her own for many years, but she soon begins to feel out of place. Determined to find the means to live on her own, she applies for a part-time job at Caramel Mokaccino, a café close to campus that is owned by a member of the Salviati family.
As she settles into her new life, she meets lots of new friends, both at school and at work. As time goes by she gets to know them better, and helps each of them to solve the problems that arise in their daily lives.
Your job as the player is to guide Penny through this new life, to help her learn more about the people around her and grow close to them, to learn about the troubles in their lives. It won't be easy, but with care it may lead to new bonds of friendship. Or perhaps even romance?

 

Caramel Mokaccino will feature 5(?) "pursuable" characters for Penny to either befriend or start a romance with by the end of the story, and several side characters that will add flavor to the story.

There will be 10+ endings, over 20 beautifully illustrated locations and over 20 pretty event illustrations!

Our Alpha Demo was developed during March and early April for NaNoRenO 2016. In addition to the finished main cast sprites, it has some placeholder sprites, sketched backgrounds and a few game CGs are incomplete... but it should give you and idea of the direction we're taking! :) 

The GUI is currently also a placeholder, the final game will have an overhauled GUI! It also features a couple of finished Background art pieces we had previously commissioned from Badriel, along with the original logo.

 Why crowdfund?

By raising outside funding for the game, we’ll be able to commission more finished assets, as well as devote more time to working on the art, writing, and programming without having to sacrifice our living expenses during development. It will also allow us to hire assistants to help speed up the development process. This means that we’ll be able to deliver you a more polished product, in a (hopefully!) shorter amount of time.

Working on a personal project is priceless.... but bills need to be paid!

According to our current math, all this comes up to a grand total of US$9500. Or as you can see in our campaign, CAD$11900

Where will those funds go?

> Art assets will be the most costly. It involves a few extra sprites that show up later in the game, All the CGs, all the Backgrounds, new GUI elements and also hiring assistant artists to speed up the process.

>Next big chunk is writing and editing.
While some people don't pay themselves to work on their projects, we believe in paying everybody fairly - including ourselves (an artist and a writer), so we can devote a decent amount of time working on the game instead of being limited to spare after-work hours and weekends, and sacrificing sleep and much needed life outside work.

> The core programming will be mostly done (and paid for) during the demo, so the price on the chart reflects only extra coding (including coding in the new GUI we want to get done) and scene directing (adding changing expressions, animations and transitions to scenes), which actually takes a lot of work!

> Our Reward fulfillment item is low, since we'll try to keep most rewards digital. We'd love to have more physycal rewards, but in the end they cost money to make and the amount that goes towards the game gets severely cut.

> We'll keep 10% for contingencies, aka "safety net money." In case something goes wrong, this money will cover for it :)

>Wait... what about Music? We have found a very talented composer who has decided to contribute to the game free of charge. Yes, we're as blown away by this as you are! In case things don't work out for any reason, we'll use contingency money for this item.

Our plan is to have Caramel Mokaccino developed in a timeframe of 6 months, regardless of funding. We'll aim for a December 2016 release.

If we can't get funded (we hope that's not the case!) the game will still be released, albeit as a much smaller and simpler title, since we'll be working on it in our off time, and will have to scrape for money for a limited amount of commissioned assets.

Worst case scenario (and best case scenario, in case we reach all our stretch goals!) our timeline would be stretched for another six months at most, meaning a Q1-Q2 2017 release.

 

 

We are considering mostly digital rewards, to maximize the money going towards the project itself! 

That being said, we still want to make merchandise of Caramel Mokaccino and will most likely add small physical rewards when certain stretch goals are met. We're still considering this, so any feedback is very appreciated! :)

Hi! This is KittyKatStar and Deji, half of the Apple Cider team and the ones behind the cute, cuddly and friendship-y fantasy adventure with dragon boys Autumn's Journey.

We are a couple of developers that got together via Twitter, while working on separate projects for WinterWolves. We became friends, we met and eventually we became partners in crime and long distance girlfriends.
Kitty is from Canada and Deji is from Chile. We see each other once a year or every two years, when the budget allows it, but we talk on Skype every day.

Caramel Mokaccino is Deji's pet project. It was originally conceived back in 2007, right around when she first started working on Visual Novel commissioned art for other people. Sadly, working on other people's projects means very little time to work on your own, and Deji fails at writing, so CM ended up being in the backburner for ages.

A couple of years ago, we got together with the rest of the Apple Cider Team (the talented Arowana and Nellie, which are busy with their own personal project right now!) and made our first personal project: Autumn's Journey.

 

 It was an extremely fun adventure together and we discovered we worked really well as a team! So... we decided to give Caramel Mokaccino a try.

Sadly, commissioned projects happened of course, and we also had the brilliant idea of make another short visual novel for NaNoRenO 2015 that ended up eating a lot of last year: Cute Demon Crashers! (With the talented SugarScript team instead of as Apple Cider) WARNING! It's an 18+ title!)

 

After CDC done, we decided to resume work on CM, finish a demo and launch a campaign so we could fund its development.

Caramel Mokaccino has become very special to both of us.
Deji came up with it during a time where most of the Visual Novels around had a male protagonist and there weren't VNs around where you could date boys and girls alike. Also, most of them were set in highschool and she was a college student back then, so she wanted something more relatable.

As we embarked on this project together, we wanted to make a game about people we'd befriend or date ourselves, people with every day problems and every day backgrounds and of course a cast of cute, lovable and pretty dorky characters.

Our little games are a reflection of ourselves, what we love and what we want, and we're happy to have found a lot of people online that shares our interests! We want to keep releasing games that make us, our friends and our newfound fans smile!

Risks and challenges

The worst thing that can happen regarding this project is life getting in the way and for us to get delayed on finishing it.
This has happened in the past, but mostly when it comes to working on personal, unpaid projects, where we have to prioritise what pays the bills over what we would like to do. We have taken steps to avoid this outcome, but, again, sometimes life gets in the way sometimes...
If any delays were to happen, everybody involved will be shorty informed and kept on the loop!

We have a track record of finished work both on commission and personal, so we're not worried about not finishing the project at all :)
