About this project
Project Prompt is home automation software for your Mac and iPhone designed to connect to and control any device you can imagine. Remove all of the complexity involved with building a smart, affordable home automation system and use Prompt. If your internet connected lightbulbs are all different brands, no problem. Simply connect them to Project Prompt and turning off those lights is as easy as pressing a button.
Additionally, Project Prompt works with several new computer interface devices, such as the Leap Motion and the Thalmic Labs Myo. If you don't have a screen nearby or simply don't want to use one, Project Prompt even talks to you to let you know what is going on in your home. Take a look at our Myo demo video below.
Several hardware products exist on the market that are designed to be a "one stop shop"; that is, the products claim to work with many of the home automation devices that are out there. The problem with these products is that they're often expensive, they don't allow for much customization, and they don't actually work with every home automation device on the planet.
Project Prompt is here to bring home automation into the 21st century. The only limitation that should exist when controlling your home is owning the hardware. There's no need for you to open one company's app to turn the light in the kitchen off, only to need another company's app to turn the light in your bedroom on. You shouldn't have to use a separate app to change the temperature and to control the music playing throughout your house. You shouldn't have to spend hours tweaking settings trying to connect your thermostat to your iPhone. Everything should be in one place. Everything should just work.
Don't get locked down to a single ecosystem simply because the manufacturers don't want your smart devices to work together. Let Project Prompt connect your devices to make a proper smart home.
With all this emphasis on customization, you must be wondering how far this customization can actually go. In regards to third-party devices, the answer is rather simple; if you can connect the device to your Mac or to the internet, you can make it work with Project Prompt.
Each of the included Prompts are highly customizable as well. If you don't want to hear a voice constantly remarking on your every action, you can turn voice support off. If you have no need for the graphical display in the Mac version, turn it off and Project Prompt will live in your Mac's menu bar. You can even build your own custom control method using our websocket API.
Project Prompt is also built to make heavy use of scheduling and your phone's location. Tell Prompt to change the temperature in your house when you're at work and Prompt will help you save on your electricity bill. Configure Project Prompt to wake you up in the morning with a customized message, including data from certain Prompts to help you plan your day.
Project Prompt is designed to be very expandable, and as such, there are several different modules called Prompts that can be used to customize your home automation experience.
The currently implemented modules are:
- Lighting Prompt
- Any other switch based Prompt
- Temperature Prompt
- Any other dial based Prompt
- Weather Prompt
- Wake Up Alarm Prompt
- RSS Feed Prompt
- Social (Twitter/Facebook) Prompt
- Custom (web based) Prompt
An application with goals like that of Project Prompt requires a large amount of testing due to all of the possible software and hardware combinations. At the present, Project Prompt has its basic framework completed and the user interface almost finalized. All that remains to be done is the integration and testing of the devices that Prompt will support out of the box, along with testing our DIY support as well.
Your contribution will help fund:
- The purchase of various third party devices
- The development required to support these devices out of the box
- The testing of these officially supported devices along with DIY support for other devices
Our goal with this Kickstarter campaign is to raise awareness for Project Prompt along with acquiring the funds necessary to buy and test many different home automation products. These devices are often rather expensive, necessitating a fairly large investment for testing. We've done what we can, now it's up to contributors to help us add out of the box support for smart home products.

Risks and challenges
The largest challenge when working with a software project similar to Project Prompt is dealing with the scope of all the possible use cases. There are so many situations that Project Prompt might be thrown into, and as developers we must be prepared for those edge cases. To mitigate this risk, we will be performing extensive testing of our own, in addition to outsourcing testing to the community in general. This will only be aided by the Kickstarter community.
We are large fans of transparency, and as such we feel obligated to provide as much information as we possibly can to backers as Project Prompt progresses. If we hit a major setback, we will be sure to let backers know of it. We are confident that our team will successfully release Project Prompt within the coming months, to the full satisfaction of our backers.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
