About

You are not adventurers.

They’re dead.

Just like His Royal Majesty, Prince Roth, Earl of the City of Solstice and his wife, the Princess Sirena.

Their killers were the Star Society, five rival criminal organizations who joined together as one. They are: the Church of Mother Moon, led by the Shadow Shroud, a mysterious prophetess, the Nizari, most ruthless mercenary company in the known world, the shadow archers of the Sagittarius Sect, the mysterious elven executioners of the Order of Antares, and the martial arts masters known as the Five Forms.

The city is now theirs in all but name. The Royal Chancellor, Lord Toren, Her Majesty’s Lord Protector, is officially in charge of the city. But everyone knows he’s a tired old man who looks the other way while terror rules the streets.

You are members of the Vigilant, a thoroughly corrupted effigy of a once proud guild, charged with keeping order in a chaotic city of 100,000 souls. You are not adventurers. But you have a duty.

Welcome to the City of Solstice

The City of Solstice is a low-magic fantasy campaign set in an ancient city, now ruled by the forces of evil. The PCs in the campaign are members of the Vigilant, the city watch. Imagine if “The Untouchables” were set in a fantasy city, rather than 1920’s Chicago. In addition to the Star Society, there are gangs, petty crime, and corrupt guards to deal with, along with every sort of crime you can imagine: murder, prostitution, drugs, and theft.

But this is still a fantasy world, filled with magic both wondrous and terrifying. A man might hire The Menagerie, a gang who use captured beasts from the wilderness as instruments of murder, to kill his wife. A necromancer might stumble into undead-filled catacombs long forgotten underneath the city, and take control of the undead there, to start his own burgeoning criminal empire.

Noir crime fiction and old-school fantasy gaming meet.

The City of Solstice is a setting of contrasts. A low-magic campaign takes place in a high-magic world. The Kingdom of Annwyn is steeped in magical tradition but the oppressive regime ruling Solstice has outlawed any magic they feel will threaten them.

What’s In The Book?

A fully realized city.

12 Wards, fully mapped and described. Dozens of NPCs with plot hooks, secrets, lies, and agendas. I’ve been running the city of Solstice as my home campaign for a few months now. With the input of my players, the city has grown and become more “lived in” over time.

New classes.

Some old favorites revisited, with an eye toward playability, along with several new archetypes just waiting for players and villains. The Anti-Paladin, Bard, Martial Artist, Mercenary Captain, Mystic, Noble, Zodiac Channeler and more.

New Magic Items.

Class specific magic items, tuned to the different archetypes revealed in the setting. Tablets of knowledge for mystics. Drums for bards that inspire the party to combat ferocity. Spirit swords for the martial artist that channel and enhance their Ki. Magic dice for thieves.

New Spells and Magic

A completely new magic system. Spell slots are gone. In their place, spellcasters channel magical energies they can barely control, with potentially disastrous results. In return, the spellcaster has their entire spell list available at a moment’s notice. The power is theirs, if they have the will and time to harness it.

Fulfillment by DTRPG

All print versions of The City of Solstice will be fulfilled by DriveThruRPG! They offer a fantastic service to small press publishers.

Risks and challenges

The book is 75% written from the ground up for First Edition/OSRIC™. The maps for the city are nearly complete, and we hope to commission professional maps and adventures with the funds generated by the Kickstarter.

We are confident of getting the book completed by our distribution date. Our publishing partner Fainting Goat Games has extensive experience in successful Kickstarter fulfillment.

RPG production has many obstacles. We believe our schedule is realistic - but it's worth noting that sometimes Print on Demand configuration with OBS can be a protracted process.
