A one-shot adventure series getting new players into tabletop RPGs
This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Mon, October 7 2019 6:00 AM UTC +00:00.
'First Look, building a gateway to tabletop RPGs'
We want your help to bring our project, First Look, to life. Tabletop RPGs can present new players a difficult mix of challenges and barriers, and First Look is an attempt to break this problem.
By showcasing our first adventure ‘Too Ghoul for School’, we hope you will join us in creating four new adventure books to build an entrance way into tabletop RPGs. Come find more information at our website.
“That is the goal of First Look, to get people to play, get people invested, and have them look for more…I one hundred percent recommend First Look." – Ryan, ATGN
“First Look does exactly what it sets out to do. A great jumping in point...Too Ghoul for School has a fun and unique setting and an enjoyable plot line.”– Naomi, Casual Game Revolution
"Designed to introduce new players to role-playing, First Look is an excellent series of guides that walk new game groups through storytelling and encounters step by step." - AnnaMaria, Board Game Quest
What is First Look?
First Look is a tabletop role-playing game that teaches the ideas and basic rules as you play. From new GMs to new players, everyone starts together with zero preparation. By approaching the game from this angle, First Look hopes to become a starting point for the growing interest in our tabletop hobby, helping game stores and experienced players alike increase their player base.
What is our plan, and what am I pledging?
Everyone likes different things and we want First Look to represent that. By using our first adventure ‘Too Ghoul for School’, we want to showcase our new approach and together create and distribute four new adventures that can provide different ways to play.
Our next planned adventures are:
- The Missing Wizard (Fantasy)
- The Good Ship Xanadu (Sci-fi)
- The Stag and The Unicorn (Two-Player, Spy)
- Super Punch (For Kids, Superheroes)
Scroll down to our 'The Next Four' section to learn more about each one.
Our Kickstarter pledges are split into backing one or all of the new adventures, with physical or digital copies available. By choosing to pledge, you are helping First Look to raise the money to create, design, and distribute these new adventures.
With ‘Too Ghoul for School’, we wanted to showcase our approach and give you the best reason to join our adventure. Along with the 'freebie' version available from this page, the complete 'Too Ghoul for School' adventure is being given away for free with our pledges.
By working together, we can create the tools and opportunities we wished were available to us when we started, backed by the knowledge and experience of our community.
How does an adventure work?
First Look requires no preparation, not even for the Gamesmaster (GM). Each adventure is a stand-alone one evening session, where prospective players turn over the page and start together. No prior rule-learning is required. Just sit down, grab some friends and get started.
By structuring the story into Acts, each layering on new rules and ideas, the players can learn by playing the story. Gone are the long character sheet creation sessions when no one knows what is going on.
The format revolves around gradually giving more control to the GM, starting with text boxes to read out loud and finishing on the First Look [Encounter] system.
This approach is great for running adventures even when the GM doesn't know what's next! From hobby stores looking to run concurrent games to experienced players wanting to convince their friends to play, First Look allows groups to play and learn with no need for external guidance.
What rules system are you using?
Our adventures use a simple D6 system to run the story. We felt it was important to put good story first and save the complicated rules for later. For those new to the hobby, D6 means any normal six-sided die, much like you would find in any traditional board game.
Each character has three skills, Brawn, Brains, and Bravery, with each skill having a value between 1 and 6. To pass a skill check, the player simply needs to roll a number below their skill value. This simple approach allows players to get on with the story and worry about complications later. Feel free to check out our ‘Freebie: Too Ghoul for School’ adventure to see how this format evolves through the story.
The Next Four
First Look aims to provide a new series of introductory adventure options, and if 'Too Ghoul for School' has piqued your interest, here are the adventures you can help us create.
Fantasy and Sci-Fi remain at the top of popularity for tabletop RPGs. In view of this and in order to cater to new players' tastes and interests, we would like to present two new adventures.
The Missing Wizard is the best place to be an elf, or maybe a dwarf, definitely something magical. Set in a fantasy world, this adventure rides on the success of this genre in getting new players involved in the hobby. With a wizard gone missing and the local population in a bind on what to do, it's time for a brave adventuring party to sort out this mess.
The Good Ship Xanadu brings the moral dilemmas of Sci-Fi to the forefront. As the repair workforce for the Alph Corporation, you were the first to be called when a company transport ship stalled in the Xanadu Star System. Long designated an 'Empty' system, this job should have no complications.
With the explosion of the tabletop scene, it's also important to cater to a variety of reasons to play as well as genres.
The Stag & the Unicorn offers an alternative style of play, seeing players take on the missions of the sexy and suave secret service. One of you is the GM, running the game, whilst the other plays as a top spy hot on the trail of their next mission. Couples gaming, whether between partners or friends, is fast becoming a strong category of its own, and we at First Look hope we can help more people enter the hobby in the company of a pal.
Super Punch brings RPGs to the kids as their imagination and penchant for ignoring adults makes for one enjoyable experience. First Look wants to allow adults to run RPGs for kids, seeing the benefit that strengthening of imagination can have on growth.
Too Ghoul for School
To whet your appetite and get your interest, let us show you what we're all about. Our first adventure is available specifically for you!
Who is lurking around the school? Do you have the heart and courage to sort out the mystery? The only way to find out is to get meddling in their plans and what better gang of kids to do it than you!
We here at First Look would not ask for your help without backing up our claims, so this file gives you the first half of the adventure for free. Covering character sheets, skill checks, and the First Look [Encounter] system, it gives you all the information to experience our teaching style and approach. We hope you like it.
We sent 'Too Ghoul for School' out for review, and the teams at ATGN and Casual Game Revolution kindly offered their help. Check out their review here, ATGN and CGR, and feel free to visit their site for more of their content.
ATGN"From start to finish, the players were hooked into the game, and they’ve pestered me to run more stuff with them in future. That is the goal of First Look, to get people to play, get people invested, and have them look for more.
So overall, I think for either someone looking to get their friends into role-playing, or someone who has never played before and knows a couple of mates who might be willing to give it a shot, I one hundred percent recommend First Look." - Ryan
Casual Game Revolution "First Look does exactly what it sets out to do. It’s is a great jumping in point, with minimal commitment outside of one evening...Too Ghoul for School has a fun and unique setting and an enjoyable plot line." - Naomi
Board Game Quest "Even without an experienced player any group can start on page one and walk through the portal into their own story, whether its intrigue, sci-fi, fantasy, or comedy. From types of dice to character statistics to party goal setting, First Look provides a great inauguration into role-playing games for any new band of adventurers." - AnnaMaria
Behind the Scenes - Designer Notes
To help give some more behind the scenes thoughts, we took our designer and asked them some questions to probe their ideas.
You can see more of these videos as well as other content on our Instagram page.
The Team Behind First Look
First Look was imagined by A.P. Linning, the designer of this project. In fact, it is me writing this so let me change grammar and join you in first person.
I want to take this space to thank my friends and family who have provided support in getting the project to this point, as without their help, I would have nothing to show. Thanks to everyone involved, I really really appreciate it.
A special thanks needs to go out to Amanda Currie (Art), David Cummings and Rachel MacAnespie (Editors), and Adam Hughes and Callum Neeson (Marketing), as without these five in particular, I would be stuck right at the beginning.

Risks and challenges
Our main obstacles revolve around the creation of new adventures and the manufacturing and distribution costs associated with the project.
The New Adventures
Unlike many Kickstarter projects, our game is not already completed and just awaiting distribution. However, while we are asking to raise money to create new adventures, the outlines for the stories are already completed. Through ‘Too Ghoul for School’, the First Look template has been finalised allowing us an easier transformation from outline to finished presentation. To help ease any concerns, we released Freebie:Too Ghoul for School to allow you to see and experience our style, format, and approach.
Shipping and Manufacturing
First Look has not agreed to any terms or contracts with any manufacturers or distributors and is therefore able to source the appropriate scale given any level of success on Kickstarter. To mitigate any concerns, our shipping costs listed above were created by costing the effort to manually send any copies ourselves. This gives any contributor the likely highest value of shipping cost to consider. However, please bear in mind these values are subject to change.
