Do Not Go Quietly: An Anthology of Victory in Defiance

Resistance. Revolution. Standing up and demanding to have your space, your say, your right to be. From small acts of defiance to protests that shut down cities, Do Not Go Quietly is an anthology of science fiction and fantasy short stories about those who resist. Within this anthology, we will chronicle the fight for what is just and right, and what that means: from leading revolutions to the simple act of saying “No.”

WHAT IS DO NOT GO QUIETLY?
Do Not Go Quietly editors Jason Sizemore and Lesley Conner are striving to build a ToC that is representative of the world around us. They want more than the old, white, predominately male perspective that has dominated politics and publishing for way too long. They want to give a voice to marginalized people and creators who need to be heard. To that end, Jason and Lesley have invited a diverse and talented group of authors to create all-new works of fiction.

The anthology with include such writers as A. Merc Rustad, Rebecca Roanhorse, Maurice Broaddus, Nayad Monroe, Karin Lowachee, Brooke Bolander, John Hornor Jacobs, Laird Barron, Brian Keene, Cassandra Khaw, Sheree Renée Thomas, Catherynne M. Valente, Seanan McGuire, Fran Wilde, Rich Larson, Sarah Pinsker, and J.F. Gonzalez (co-writing with Lesley Conner).

Our authors were asked to write a story about characters who resist. What these characters resist is something we left to the writers. The things we fight against, the inequality, abuse, and unjust treatment are personal, and each define an individual’s life experience.

Resistance can be a small act of everyday defiance. And other times, resistance means massive movements that topple governments and become iconic historical moments. Either way, there is power in these acts, and the contributors in Do Not Go Quietly will harness that power to shake our readers to the core. We are subordinates to a power base that is actively working to solidify its grip on the world. Now is time to stand up and raise your voice and tell the world that enough is enough!

With your help, Apex can bring you this timely SFF anthology written by a fantastic line-up of authors. Your pledge money will cover Do Not Go Quietly’s costs and provide Apex with the means to further explore ways to enhance the anthology, reward our hard-working contributors, and continue the resistance post-anthology publication.

Jason Sizemore is the son of an unemployed coal miner in a tiny Kentucky Appalachian villa named Big Creek (population 400) where fought his way out of the hills to the big city of Lexington. He attended Transylvania University (a real school with its own vampire) and received a degree in computer science. Since 2004, he has owned and operated Apex Publications. He is the editor of five anthologies, author of the short story collection Irredeemable and For Exposure: The Life and Times of a Small Press Publisher, a three-time Hugo Award loser, and an freelancer. He can be found on Twitter at @apexjason.

Lesley Conner is a writer, social media editor and marketing leader for Apex Publications, and Managing Editor for Apex Magazine. She spends her days pestering book reviewers, proofreading, wrangling slush, doling out contracts, and chatting about books, writing, and anything else that crosses her mind on the @ApexBookCompany Twitter account. Most of her nights are spent with a good book and a glass of wine. Her alternative history horror novel, The Weight of Chains, was recently published by Sinister Grin Press. To find out all her secrets, you can follow her on Twitter at @LesleyConner.

Our storytellers include:

Laird Barron spent his early years in Alaska, where he raced the Iditarod three times during the early 1990s and worked in the fishing and construction industries. He is the author of several books, including The Beautiful Thing That Awaits Us All; Swift to Chase; and Blood Standard. His work has also appeared in many magazines and anthologies. Barron currently resides in the Rondout Valley writing stories about the evil that men do.

Brooke Bolander writes weird things of indeterminate genre, most of them leaning rather heavily towards fantasy or general all-around weirdness. An alum of the 2011 Clarion Writers’ Workshop at UCSD, her stories have been featured in Lightspeed, Strange Horizons, Tor.com, Uncanny, and various other fine purveyors of the fantastic. She has been a repeat finalist for the Nebula, the Hugo, the Locus, the Theodore Sturgeon, and the World Fantasy Award, much to her unending bafflement. Her first book, The Only Harmless Great Thing, was published by Tor Dot Com Publishing in 2018.

Maurice Broaddus is a community organizer and teacher whose work has appeared in Lightspeed Magazine, Weird Tales, Apex Magazine, Asimov’s, Cemetery Dance, Black Static, and many more. Some of his stories have been collected in The Voices of Martyrs. He is the author of the urban fantasy trilogy, The Knights of Breton Court, and the (upcoming) middle grade detective novel series The Usual Suspects. Learn more about him at MauriceBroaddus.com.

J.F. Gonzalez was an American author, primarily of horror fiction. He wrote many notable novels and has done collaborations with Bram Stoker Award winners Mike Oliveri and Brian Keene. His contribution is a partially complete manuscript to be finished by editor Lesley Conner.

John Hornor Jacobs is the award-winning author of Southern Gods, This Dark Earth, the young adult Incarcerado series, and The Incorruptibles. His fiction has appeared in Playboy Magazine, Cemetery Dance, and Apex Magazine. Jacobs resides in the American South and spends his free time when not working on his next book thinking about working on his next book. You can learn more about him at johnhornorjacobs.com or talk to him on Twitter at @johnhornor.

Brian Keene writes novels, comic books, short fiction, and occasional journalism for money. He is the author of over fifty books, mostly in the horror, crime, and dark fantasy genres. His 2003 novel, The Rising, is often credited (along with Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead comic and Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later film) with inspiring pop culture’s current interest in zombies. Keene’s novels have been translated into German, Spanish, Polish, Italian, French, Taiwanese, and many more. In addition to his own original work, Keene has written for media properties such as Doctor Who, The X-Files, Hellboy, Masters of the Universe, and Aliens.

Cassandra Khaw writes horror, video games, tweets for money, articles about video games, and tabletop RPGs. These are not necessarily unrelated items. Her work can be found in professional short story magazines such as Clarkesworld, Fireside Fiction, Uncanny, and Shimmer. Cassandra’s first paranormal rom-com Bearly a Lady released this year. Her recent Lovecraftian Southern Gothic A Song for Quiet is a considerably different animal.

Rich Larson was born in Galmi, Niger, has studied in Rhode Island and worked in southern Spain, and now lives in Ottawa, Canada. His short fiction appears in numerous Year’s Best anthologies and has been translated into Chinese, Vietnamese, Polish, Czech, French, and Italian. He was the most prolific author of short science fiction in 2015, 2016 and possibly 2017 as well. His debut novel, Annex, comes out in July 2018, and his debut collection, Tomorrow Factory, follows in October 2018. Find more at richwlarson.tumblr.com and support him via patreon.com/richlarson.

Karin Lowachee was born in South America, grew up in Canada, and worked in the Arctic. Her first novel Warchild won the 2001 Warner Aspect First Novel Contest. Both Warchild (2002) and her third novel Cagebird (2005) were finalists for the Philip K. Dick Award. Cagebird won the Prix Aurora Award in 2006 for Best Long-Form Work in English and the Spectrum Award also in 2006. Her books have been translated into French, Hebrew, and Japanese, and her short stories have appeared in anthologies edited by Nalo Hopkinson, John Joseph Adams, Jonathan Strahan, and Ann VanderMeer. Her fantasy novel, The Gaslight Dogs, was published through Orbit Books USA.

Seanan McGuire writes books, and it is exceptionally difficult to make her stop. Other things it is difficult to make her stop doing: talking about her cats. Singing random selections from obscure off-Broadway musicals. Watching horror movies. Wandering into swamps, cornfields, and haunted attractions (where she is likely to seek out the artistic director and critique the implicit virology of their zombie attack walk-through). Writing structured poetry. Despite all this, she occasionally gets things done. No one is really quite sure how. Keep up with her at www.seananmcguire.com.

Nayad Monroe is the editor of two anthologies, What Fates Impose and Not Our Kind, and her short stories have been published in several speculative fiction anthologies, including the diverse steampunk hit Steampunk World edited by Sarah Hans. Nayad also shares her artwork on her Instagram (@nayadmonroe) and is on Twitter as @Nayad in those rare moments when she is not cooking incredible amounts of food for her three sons or getting riled up about politics.

Sarah Pinsker is the author of the 2015 Nebula Award-winning novelette “Our Lady of the Open Road.” Her five other Nebula-nominated works include the 2017 novella “And Then There Were (N-One).” Her novelette “In Joy, Knowing the Abyss Behind” was the 2014 Sturgeon Award winner and a 2013 Nebula finalist. Her fiction has been published in magazines including Asimov’s, Strange Horizons, Lightspeed, Fantasy & Science Fiction, and Uncanny, among others, as well as numerous anthologies and year’s bests. She is also a singer/songwriter with three albums on various independent labels and a fourth forthcoming. She lives in Baltimore, Maryland with her wife and dog. She can be found online at sarahpinsker.com and on Twitter as @sarahpinsker.

Rebecca Roanhorse is an Ohkay Owingeh/Black writer based in Northern New Mexico. Her novel Trail Of Lightning (Book One of the Sixth World series) is available summer 2018 from Saga Press, and her children's book Race To The Sun is coming in 2019 from Rick Riordan Presents. Her short story “Welcome to Your Authentic Indian Experience (TM)” is a 2017 Nebula Award winner. Her non-fiction can be found in Strange Horizons, Uncanny Magazine, and How I Resist: Activism and Hope for a New Generation (Macmillan). Follow here on Twitter at @roanhorsebex or find out more at rebeccaroanhorse.com.

A. Merc Rustad is a queer non-binary writer who lives in Minnesota. Merc is a 2016 Nebula Awards finalist and their stories have appeared in Lightspeed, Fireside, Apex, Uncanny, Shimmer, and other fine venues. You can find Merc on Twitter at @Merc_Rustad or their website amercrustad.com.

Sheree Renée Thomas is a Memphis-based short fiction writer, poet, and editor whose “black pot mojo” creative work explores ordinary people facing extraordinary circumstances. She is the author of Sleeping Under the Tree of Life (Aqueduct Press), honored with a Publishers Weekly Starred Review and longlisted for the 2016 James Tiptree, Jr. Award, and of Shotgun Lullabies (2011), described as “a revelatory work like Jean Toomer’s Cane.” Thomas edited the Dark Matter black speculative fiction volumes that won two World Fantasy Awards. In 2017 she was honored with the L. A. Banks Award for Outstanding Contribution to Speculative Fiction. She has been awarded fellowships from Bread Loaf Environmental, the Millay Colony of the Arts, Cave Canem, VCCA, Blue Mountain Center, Art Omi/Ledig House, the New York Foundation of the Arts, and the Tennessee Arts Commission. Follow her on Twitter at @blackpotmojo or @shereereneethomas.

Catherynne M. Valente is The New York Times–bestselling author of over two dozen works of fiction and poetry, including Palimpsest, the Orphan’s Tales series, Deathless, Radiance, and the crowdfunded phenomenon The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making. She is the winner of the Andre Norton, Tiptree, Mythopoeic, Rhysling, Lambda, Locus, and Hugo Awards. She has been a finalist for the Nebula and World Fantasy Awards. She lives on an island off the coast of Maine with a small but growing menagerie of beasts, some of which are human.

Fran Wilde’s novels and short stories have been nominated for two Nebula awards and a Hugo, and include her Andre Norton- and Compton-Crook-winning debut novel, Updraft (Tor 2015), its sequels, Cloudbound (2016) and Horizon (2017), and the novelette “The Jewel and Her Lapidary” (Tor.com Publishing 2016). Her short stories appear in Asimov’s, Tor.com, Beneath Ceaseless Skies, Shimmer, Nature, and the 2017 Year’s Best Dark Fantasy and Horror. She writes for publications including The Washington Post, Tor.com, Clarkesworld, iO9.com, and GeekMom.com. You can find her on Twitter (@fran_wilde), Instagram (@fran_wilde), and at franwilde.net.

Tal M. Klein was born in Israel, grew up in New York, and currently lives in Detroit with his wife and two daughters. When she was five years old, his daughter Iris wrote a book called I’m a Bunch of Dinosaurs that went on to become one of the most successful children’s book projects on Kickstarter ― something that Tal explained to Iris by telling her, “your book made lots of kids happy.” Iris then asked Tal, “Daddy, why don’t you write a book that makes lots of grownups happy?” Tal mulled this over for a few years, and eventually wrote his first book: The Punch Escrow. It won the Geek & Sundry Hard Science Fiction prize, garnered starred reviews from Kirkus, Library Journal, and Foreword Reviews, and has been optioned by Lionsgate where it is now in development as a major motion picture.

Russell Nichols is a speculative fiction writer and endangered journalist. Raised in Richmond, California, he sold all his stuff in 2011 and now lives out of a backpack with his wife, vagabonding around the world. Find his work in Fiyah, Apex Magazine, Fireside Fiction, Strange Horizons, Nightmare Magazine's POC Destroy Horror special issue and others. Look for him at russellnichols.com.

Dee Warrick writes short fiction and video games, and sometimes hides short fiction inside of video games. An Ohio native, she currently lives in Denver, Colorado after spending most of her adult life as an expatriate in South Korea, Germany, and the Netherlands. Her work has appeared in short fiction venues like Tor.com, Apex Magazine, Shimmer Magazine, and Daily Science Fiction. She's your rad trans friend.

… and hopefully many more additional authors will be announced as the Kickstarter progresses.

Our cover art was illustrated by Marcela Bolívar. This art has been used for our Kickstarter video and promotional materials, as well as the cover for this anthology.

Marcela Bolívar is from Curitiba, Brazil. She is a digital artist specialized in photomontage techniques. All her compositions are based in photographs that undergo a complex process of transformation, assemblage and detailing, bringing them closer to a pictorial expression. Her clients include Random House US, Harlequin UK, PS Publishing UK, Centipede Press, Envato Ltd, Editorial Planeta, Wacom Americas.

John Hornor Jacobs created the cover title design and typography. Dave Robison of Wonderthing Studios narrated and animated our Kickstarter video. Additional graphic work by Matt Davis and Justin Stewart.

What started as a single quarterly print magazine of dark SF short stories (the well-regarded Apex Science Fiction & Horror Digest) has turned into a busy small press with over 90 titles in print and the monthly print and digital zine Apex Magazine.

Along the way, Apex has had the opportunity to publish some of the most exciting and interesting writers in speculative fiction: Brian Keene, Tade Thompson, Damien Angelica Walters, Douglas F. Warrick (neé Dee Warrick), Nick Mamatas, Michael Wehunt, Lavie Tidhar, Chesya Burke, E. Catherine Tobler, Chris Bucholz, and many, many others.

Our books and magazine have been the recipient of some of the top awards in science fiction, fantasy, and horror: the Hugo Award, the Nebula Award, the Stoker Award, the World Fantasy Award, among others. In 2014, the third anthology in our international SF series, The Apex Book of World SF: Volume 3, was selected as one of NPR's top 40 books of the year.

Nearly 1,400 backers supported our previous Kickstarter project—the anthology Upside Down: Inverted Tropes in Storytelling.

Find out more about Apex Book Company at www.apexbookcompany.com and Apex Magazine at www.apex-magazine.com.

The minimum goal for this anthology is $20,000. This money will allow us to pay our authors a professional (SFWA) rate of $0.06 per word and our cover artist a fair and professional rate. In addition, your pledge will also cover graphic design, layout, copy editing, video animation and narration, and typesetting, as well as providing copies of the physical and electronic books to backers. Whatever is left over will go toward fulfilling backer rewards, stretch goals, shipping costs, and incidentals such as lost shipments, increased printing fees, etc. Stretch goals will be announced once we make our $20,000 minimum goal.

The physical books will be printed by Apex Publications in accordance with their existing printer. The eBooks will be designed and created by Apex. Fulfillment to backers will be done using the ApexBookCompany.com eBook fulfillment software. The eBooks are offered in multiple formats, DRM-free, and are device-agnostic.

Not every add-on is available at every reward level.
