Rice Dice is a streamlined dice game version of Spirits of the Rice Paddy. Players familiar with that game will feel at home with Rice Dice. New players will find Rice Dice to be a great introduction to its big brother.
Rice Dice plays 1-5, ages 10+ in about 30-45 minutes.
Roll the custom dice and choose one action based on the results.
Add rice paddy cards to your field using the Card action.
Run water through your paddies,
or assign laborers to plant and harvest,
Harvesting gains players rice, which is essential to winning, but paddies with weeds produce less rice so it’s essential to assign laborers to keep paddies clean.
A harvested paddy can once again be flooded using a water action; and the cycle of planting, draining, weeding, and harvesting begins again.
Players can re-roll their dice, but add one weed to your paddy for each weed symbol result!
The first player to collect 100 rice (via harvesting, or other special abilities) wins!
Like Spirits of the Rice Paddy, Rice Dice rewards a player’s ability to optimize the process of flooding, planting, weeding, and harvesting. But it plays in just a fraction of the time!
You can download the (unformatted) rules here.
See Rahdo's run-through of gameplay and the first few turns.
We also created a short tutorial.
Philip and the APE development team have been working on weeds for awhile. We didn't like the take-that mechanism and giving other people weeds just wasn't an interesting way to spend your turn.
During final playtesting (after review copies were out) we tuned the weeds. Now they work like this:
- There is no weed action.
- Players may choose to reroll once.
- After re-rolling, any weeds rolled are added to YOUR paddy!
This accomplishes a couple things that we want:
- Removes a "take that" element from the game
- Adds a press-your-luck element
We created a fiendish solo play artificial intelligence that we call the Happy Farmer. On his turn, the Happy Farmer rolls the dice and follows an algorithm to water, plant, and harvest. Trust us, he's no push-over!
The retail version of Rice Dice will contain
- 30 paddy cards
- 5 custom rice dice
- 1 game board
- 24 wooden weed counters
- 10 wooden meeples (2 in each of 5 colors)
- 20 punchboard water tokens
- 20 punchboard plant tokens
- 5 reference cards
- Solo play components
- 1 rule sheet
Additionally, if the Rice Dice project funds, backers will get the exclusives described in the next section below, plus any unlocked stretch goals!
We have a number of components built into the base funding goal that will not be available in the retail version of the game. That means if the game funds, you'll automatically get these exclusives - at no extra cost! No waiting for stretch goals! But be sure to pledge, because these won't be available in stores.
Five extra paddy cards that provide benefits if your paddy includes a specific spirit.
Five event cards. These events are shuffled into the paddy deck. Events are resolved when drawn as part of a card action, and the active player then draws another paddy card to replace it.
Achievements may be gained during your turn and provide additional rice.
We look forward to hitting our funding goal and bringing you a rice harvest of extras!
We're the most excited about the extra new exclusive custom die at $30K! This is a press-your-luck mechanism. Roll this die for a chance to get TWO wild symbols, but also the chance of two weeds! We have more ideas for custom dice, so hopefully, we zip past $30K and can tell you more!
APE Games will be publishing Rice Dice in English, but we'll working with other respected publishers to bring you the game in other languages.
We've already signed on 2 Tomatoes (Peak Oil) but watch for others to come on board.

In addition to designing the awesome Spirits of the Rice Paddy, Philip duBarry designed Black Orchestra, Skyway Robbery, Revolution!, Courtier, and several other board games and expansions. Philip has been playing and creating games since childhood and has done so on a professional basis for the last several years.
APE Games is celebrating 20 years of making games! Our first game was Dark Horizon, which we released back in the late '90's using Grenadier Miniatures' metal line of cyberpunk miniatures.
A few years later we partnered with Rich Burlew to publish the crazy popular Order of the Stick games and comics.
duck! duck! GO! keeps delighting audiences of all ages, and all these years later those rubber duckies just keep on selling at conventions!
Designer Scott Almes' game The Great Dinosaur Rush brings gamers history and allows them to show off their creative side as they build dinosaurs from collected bones!
We have more than a dozen other titles and lots more in the works! The secret of our success is YOU. Thank you all so much.
Spirits of the Rice Paddy sold out in just a couple of months when we first printed it in 2015.
It's hard to believe it's been three years and that it's still not back in print, but we've had so many irons in the fire. Plus, we had Rice Dice on our publishing backlog and wanted to make a splash with the base game at the same time.
We sold the solo components separately from the base game for the print run. We're including solo components in the retail version of the second print run!
We're taking pre-orders for Spirits of the Rice Paddy. By pledging $1 here, you can reserve a copy of Spirits of the Rice Paddy. There is a $1 pledge level for just Spirits of the Rice Paddy (no Rice Dice) as well as a Rice Dice + Spirits pledge level.
For any of your friends who don't want to pledge via Kickstarter, we're also taking pre-orders on our store, here.
We need 500 pre-orders before we'll reprint Spirits.
Once Rice Dice funds, future pledges will reduce the number of pre-orders necessary to reprint Spirits. So, every 4 Rice Dice pledges will reduce the number of Spirits required to reprint by 1. Make sense? Well, it will once you see the blue gauge working its way down from 500 after Rice Dice funds.
Don't pay for shipping as part of your pledge! We'll provide an avenue for payment after the project has completed.
Kickstarter project creators must be extremely sensitive to shipping costs - charge too little and you run the risk of running out of money before you can ship all of the pledges.
We have done several Kickstarter projects, and have formed international partnerships that can provide the best value.
Postage prices increase annually, and we need to also consider freight costs to get the games to our warehouse and fulfillment houses around the world.
Now some good news. Pay a flat shipping fee regardless how many games you order! So, pledge for one game in Germany and pay $6 USD. Pledge for 5 games in German and pay, yep - $6! This keeps it easy for everyone and saves you some money. If you have friends in your area, team up to reduce shipping costs!
The shipping costs below reflect our best effort a keeping shipping as low as we can for you while ensuring we don't run into financial trouble.
Tabletopia is a popular online gaming platform.
Spirits of the Rice Paddy is already on Tabletopia - available for you to play!
We're putting the finishing touches on Rice Dice and will have that ready for you to play shortly! (Truth be told, I'm having trouble with the custom dice, which I've never done before in Tabletopia.)
This project is promoted by Jellop, the ad tech power behind the best Kickstarters with 400+ successful Kickstarter projects with over $200MM raised between them.

Risks and challenges
APE Games has successfully run and delivered all of our Kickstarter projects. We have a dedicated staff that works year-round packing and shipping orders. We use fulfillment companies for shipping when we have a large number of orders to ship in a short period of time, usually for overseas fulfillment.
One concern is that shipping prices increase dramatically before we're able to get this game to backers. That would be unfortunate, but it usually happens in January, and this project will ship in the same calendar year.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
