APE Games is really excited to launch our third Kickstarter project, Island Siege. Island Siege is a game of colonization in the West Indies during the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
Players build forts and reinforce them with 'building stones'. Once built, forts house colonists that can be used to construct buildings behind the fort. Buildings provide players special abilities.
Colonists can also build ships which can be sent out to lay siege to enemy forts.
The goal of the game is to get all nine of your colonists into play before your opponent. Alternately, players can win by being the first to collect 20 gold from building.
Head to the APE Games site under the Links section for a copy of the rules and a Print & Play version of the game.
Island Siege is for 2 players, but up to 4 can play by combining sets.
We're super-excited to be working with Campaign Coins on the high quality metal coins in the game. The coins shown below won't be the coins used in Island Siege, but are shown here to give you an idea of the level of detail and 'sturdiness' of the coins.
The decision to use custom coins came relatively late in the project cycle, and so the artist is just now working on them. They'll be reminiscent of the Spanish doubloons of the period.
We made a Flash video that walks you through how to play Island Siege.
One minor correction to the video that I'll fix when I get a second: players DO gain gold for building forts - one per building stone added during construction.
We'll be posting the full rules here once layout is complete, but feel free to ask other questions in the Comments section.
We're happy to bring you these add-ons to enhance your Island Siege experience. Note that none of these add-ons affect the international shipping price.
The Coquina mini-expansion adds more cards and pink building stones to the game. Pink! See the Coquina Expansion section below for more details. Kickstarter backers will have exclusive access to the Coquina mini-expansion for 6 months after the game is released!
Only 1 Coquina expansion is required when combining sets for up to 4 players.
Adding this will not affect your shipping cost.
We've moved this $22K Stretch Goal down to an add-on. This includes 6 more buildings, 5 ships and 11 more forts! Kickstarter backers will have exclusive access to the 22-card expansion for 6 months after the game is released if we get at least 100 orders.
Only 22-card expansion is required when combining sets for up to 4 players.
Adding this will not affect your shipping cost.
Get 13 more coins to use as scoring tokens in games, currency in your RPG or to lend credibility to that pirate outfit you wear to Ren Fests.
The set comes with 8x1, 3x5 and 2x10. See the our update showing the final coin art for more details.
You don't want to just drop those gorgeous coins into the game box, do you? Instead, put them into this deluxe, hand-made leather coin purse! At this great price, get two - one to keep in the game and another to go with that pirate Ren Fest outfit we talked about. See our coin purse update for pictures!
We're making our previously successful Kickstarter game Kill the Overlord available as an add-on.
The Kill the Overlord Kickstarter included a third set of eight characters. This set is going to the printer in the next couple of weeks. If you'd like to get this set, then include $7 more to your pledge amount. So $27 total for the KTO game and the 3rd character set. (Sorry, the KTO-exclusive characters are gone.)
This item does not add to the postage amount for orders in the U.S. If shipped anywhere else, please treat postage as shipping an additional Island Siege game (the box will be the same size). Please see the postage section below for more details.
We're making our previously successful Kickstarter game Rolling Freight available as an add-on.
The Rolling Freight Kickstarter also included Natural Disaster cards. If you would like these cards, then add $3 more to your pledge amount. So $73 for both Rolling Freight and the Natural Disaster cards. (Sorry, the Rolling Freight Kickstarter-exclusive Texas maps are gone.)
This item does not add to the postage amount for orders shipping in the U.S. Internationally, the whole order must ship in a large Priority box (it's too heavy for First Class). Sorry, but that's going to be costly. The cost for your entire order if you live in Canada will be $44. For everywhere else in the world the cost will be $68 (wow, right?!)
Coquina is a material that was used in forts built in this part of the world during the 1700's. One main reason for this stone's use was its softness. Enemy cannonballs would sink into the wall rather than pass through it or bust it apart.
The Coquina mini-expansion to Island Siege contains 6 new cards and 5 wooden pink coquina building stones.
Normally, building stones in forts are removed using white, gray and black attack die results. Since the dice do not have a pink face, there's no way to remove coquina stones during the first attack phase! They can only be removed using the red targeting dice results during the second phase.
You can add Coquina to any pledge level for only $7.
This mini-expansion won't be available in stores - only through APE's website or at our conventions.
Island Siege can be played by up to four players by combining two sets. Stickers are included in the game that can be used to differentiate the ships.
At the start of the game, the third player starts with one colonist on their Starting Fort. The fourth player starts with two colonists.
Players may attack any opponent, but they leave their ships by that opponent's fort until the start of their next turn, to indicate no other players may attack that fort.
Also, when performing a Draw action, the third card may be given to any opponent.
Other minor rules changes are described in the rulebook.
This item is no longer a stretch goal. Instead, we're including it in every copy of the game at NO EXTRA COST to you!
We'll upgrade the Starting Ships and Imperial Cards to individual player mats. Why do this? The individual cards work fine, but there are some subtle advantages to the player mats:
- It reinforces that the starting ship cannot be removed from play
- It prevents us from having to put "except the starting ship" on several of the cards.
- It clears up any questions about what order to place the starting cards.
Note that this isn't isn't final layout.
This item is no longer a stretch goal - it's now available at all pledge levels as an add-on!
We'll include 22 cards that were planned for a future expansion. That's 5 more ships, 6 more buildings and 11 forts - all for no extra cost to you!
The art for these cards is already complete, so hitting this goal will not delay the project!
Kickstarter provides a way to build extra postage into your pledge amount, but they only supply a single value. Earlier this year, the US Postal Service dramatically increased international postage rates. This has caused wild fluctuations in the cost of shipping to Canada vs the rest of the world.
Shipping within the United States will be free at all pledge levels. For other countries, please consult the tables below, and add the appropriate amount to your pledge.

$15 - 1 Game (including up to 1 Coquina Expansion)
$22 - 2 Games (including up to 2 Coquina Expansions)

Risks and challenges
There are always challenges when publishing a new game. APE has been doing it since 1997, so we've been through a lot of them.
Delays preparing everything for the printer can be a concern. The art for the game is complete (including the expansion cards) and we're working on layout in tandem with this project, so everything should be ready to go to press as soon as the Kickstarter project completes.
Unfortunately after it goes to the printer, the schedule is out of my hands until it hits our warehouse.
Delays can occur when the game is at the printer, or en route to our warehouse. Sometimes materials cannot be acquired, or the shipment gets caught in customs or delayed due to shipping strikes.
We have been doing shipping for years, and so have a good handle on getting games out to backers worldwide once we have them.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
