Welcome - we’re so glad you're here! We’re creating a ( ) (“whole”) new kind of media, and we can’t do it without your help! We’re producing an experimental feature film that rewrites the rules of performance, embodiment, obscenity, and the erotic. It’s not strictly art, or porn, or dance, or film—it’s something new that can’t quite be languaged yet. That being said, it’s a sincere and powerful attempt at expressing the deep rage and lush beauty and explosive joy that’s wrapped up in queer identity—we’re asking for a leap of faith and your vote of confidence to bring it to life.
Performance company the A.O. Movement Collective and queer/feminist collective AORTA films are joining forces to create an experimental feature film called ( ). Verbally pronounced "whole," this project seeks to explore the incredible potency of queer hedonism, exploring how pleasure that’s based in resistance has the power to evolve trauma into orgasm, and grief into politically radical, transformative, body-based joy. ( ) investigates the complexity of pleasure, exploring the so-called obscenity of bodies in their most tremendous capacity—their glorious, illicit humanity.
Picture a dense magical realism landscape where bodies communicate everything, and explode with a ferocity that’s both unremarkably and exceptionally human. Imagine a feast devoured without any utensils, a breaking glass orchestra to accompany bodies engaged in brutal tenderness, an instructional workout video on how to prep for explicit performance, queers who can make any hand gesture hot, and howls of eulogy for everyone we’ve lost.
( ) attempts to enact a sort of pleasure recalibration—a group excavation of the fire at our core that makes our continued survival possible. But we can’t bring it to life without you! We need to raise $8,000 with this campaign, which will carry us through our upcoming rehearsals and residencies all the way to our shoot next summer. We’ve been exploring and researching since January 2017 with an amazing team of collaborators—AOMC performers Special Guest, The Shape, and Treble Clef; Crossover performers Parts Authority and Erykah Ohms; AORTA films performers Mahx Capacity, Ginny Woolf, and Shay Knox (with a few more to join soon!); filmmaker Teen Wolf XXX, Editor The Soft Gaze, and composer Bustin Hoffman!
For now, the two groups of performers have been working separately—the AOMC through weekly rehearsals and a one-month residency through Snug Harbor Cultural Arts Center (more about the AOMC’s work here), and the performers of AORTA films through a monthly meet-up called F*CKLAB where adult performers work experimentally with scores and performance exercises (more on AORTA films' F*CKLAB here.) Both groups are made up of big-hearted embodiment nerds—we’re fascinated by human bodies and all the amazing things that they do/are/contain/signify/hold/communicate, and the complex and powerful identities of the folks that steer them.
In 2018, we’ll begin melding the groups into one practice through shared rehearsals and residencies. Then, in June, we’ll shoot our feature! The final film of ( ) will premiere at the Invisible Dog Gallery (Brooklyn, NY) in January 2019 as part of APAP, a huge annual festival of Arts Presenters, and hopefully go on to tour the globe at film festivals, screenings, and more!
We’re asking for your help in raising at least $8,000 our of our remaining budget of $36K to get us through the rest of our rehearsals and planning, and up to the film shoot in June. By that point in time, the money we’ve raised through AORTA films will give us enough savings to pay our performers, our filmmaker, our editors, pay for all our materials and lights, etc. But between now and then, we’re really in need of your support to keep these rehearsal processes moving, and to keep exploring and innovating and building this piece. Here’s our simplified breakdown:
We’re so incredibly grateful for your support! We want to thank you with things glorious things. ALL backers of this campaign will get their name (or stage name of their choosing) listed in the credits for ( ), and will also receive an invite to the AOMC's work-in-process showing of ( ) on November 17th!

Risks and challenges
As with any artistic project, there are sure to be challenges in bringing this work to fruition. Once this Kickstarter is completed, we’ll still need to raise the remainder of our full budget, which we are confident we’ll be able to do through a mix of individual fundraising, AORTA membership through www.Patreon.com/AORTAfilms, and distribution. We’ll also need to shoot the film in June of 2018—though since we’ve already secured location, cast, and crew, this feels like less of a risk and more of an exciting next step!
The biggest risk this project faces is censorship from existing social media platforms, organizations, and individuals who believe that our work is somehow inappropriate or immoral and/or violates their terms of service. While we put a great deal of intention and focus into working within the ToS of each platform we use, each platform defines nudity, sexuality, and pornography differently (and very often, not consistently, and not in favor of non-normative content.) Moreover, our work’s identity as explicitly queer, fat-positive, anti-racist, and trans feminist occasionally garners interest from trolls. There is always a chance that we’ll be flagged, shut down, harassed, etc., which might present as a momentary setback. Dealing with these interactions with patience and compassion, and using them as an opportunity to engage in honest dialogue is central to ( )’s process, and a core value of AORTA films. We deal with each of these as they arise, and use each occasion as a chance to make our work stronger, more present, and more available.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
