The children's book series you will receive (available in English and German).
The Anya & Gundi children's books excite kids to travel.
Anya, a brave girl, and Gundi, an anxious ghost, are best friends. In each children's book, they travel through a city exploring its beautiful sites and corners by unfolding a locally well-known myth.
The first book is: ‘Anya & Gundi in Cape Town’ and it describes the story about a pipe smoking contest that, according to the myth, causes the famous 'tablecloth' (fog ascending over the mountain) on the top of Table Mountain. The second book will be: ‘Anya & Gundi in London’ and this book is about the ravens who protect the city from any misfortune. The following books will take place in New York, Berlin and Mexico City.
Based on the book readings we have done, the best audience are early readers (6-10 years), but we also read it to our 4 year old daughter 😊.
The books are aimed at families who are travelling to a new city (e.g. for work, as expats or for holidays). The books can be the starting point and get everybody excited about the trip ahead. And this shall not be boring, but be told excitingly so that the kids cannot wait to arrive at those places. Every book will have lots of references so that families can travel in the footsteps of Anya & Gundi.
Each book will guide Anya & Gundi through interesting and beautiful locations. Parents will be able to point at those sights and refer to the respective illustrations in the Anya & Gundi books; e.g. the Cape of Good Hope or the Table Mountain in Cape Town or the Tower of London or the Trafalgar square in London.
Since the stories involve ghosts, the characters will also meet famous people that have passed away which will introduce some of the local history. For example, John Chapman from the famous Chapman’s Peak in Cape Town or “Winnie” Winston Churchill at the Parliament of London.
But even for families who are not travelling – the books are meant to get kids excited for adventures, travelling and discovering the world. Let your kids learn about some geography and some history and wrap it in mythical and fun stories: That’s Anya & Gundi!
The first book of the series – Anya & Gundi in Cape Town.
The first book of the series is ‘Anya & Gundi in Cape Town’ and is available in both English and German.
The book has been printed in English whilst the German version is finished as an ebook and ready for printing. We asked 20 readers to give us feedback that was all valued and in cooperated. Our critics came from all over, including children, parents, teachers, authors, editors and publishers in both English and German language. Here is a sneak preview:
Suddenly, they both hear the strangest noise. “Puff puff” it goes. "Oh golly, what was that?" Gundi starts shaking nervously.
Anya only shrugs and continues to walk on. "Come on, let's find out," she says. The noise starts getting louder and louder. "Puff puff, PUFF PUFF!" At the end of a rotten old ladder they see what looks like a larger-than-life a strange-looking figure holding a big pipe in his mouth. Slowly they approach him, Gundi holds on tightly to his friend Anya.
It is only as they get closer that Gundi realises that it is a ghost just like him. The pipe-smoking ghost takes a long drag, “Puff puff” it sounds again, and a fresh white cloud appears. Anya steps closer, "Hello, who are you?" she asks.
Each book will be a 48-page picture book cover pages with roughly 2000 words for the main story. Every book will conclude with a page explaining the actual myth and we add a list with the best local insider tips for traveling families with children.
The social engagement.
We have recently done a book reading with the NGO Care2Care in a township in Cape Town (Gugulethu). Find below a few impressions. Let's embrace the theme 'Every kid in the world should see the world and the word!'.
The next cities.
We want to create a children book series. If we only raised funding for this first book, well, then it is just one more book about Cape Town on the shelves. Instead, we want to create the series to properly ‘kickstart’ the venture and develop a ‘travel guide’ relevant for travelling families with multiple cities.
Therefore, as part of this Kickstarter campaign, we want to fund the development of six books.
The city of the 6th book will be based on a democratic voting by all backers of this campaign. The city with the biggest fan-base from our backers (be it San Francisco, Shanghai or Rio de Janeiro) will be the location of our 6th book!
The books will cost in Europe between 10 to 12 Euros in the book stores or on Amazon. At the Kickstarter campaign, we can sell them a bit cheaper. The discount depends on the reward level but it is up to c35% cheaper to buy via the campaign compared to shops or Amazon later!
A big thing for us: Every backer will participate in the selection of the city for book number six! We find this so exciting. For early birds: check out our limited rewards! You can secure yourself double or triple weighting of your vote and much more if you're early!
The unlimited reward levels allow you to choose between one, three and all six ebooks or hardcopies. If you select one or three, you can decide yourself which cities/books you want and you can always choose between English and German.
Books will be shipped hot of the press! All shipping included (standard Deutsche Post mail from Germany); no additional cost to you! 😊.
The funding goal is EUR3,000. The first book is already printed and ready for you! The Kickstarter funding will support us mainly with working capital so we can smoothly engage with our partners for the next cities whilst we start creating cash flow with our completed books.
Our internal budgeting includes formalized contracts with our illustrator and editors, as well as the standard shipping rates from the 'Deutsche Post' and the fees as published by Kickstarter.
We exactly know our costs and we're in this project 100%. It is simply too exciting.
We do not have a big team and we have to write and illustrate successively. At least at this stage. We have based our timeline for the books on the experience with our first book. However, we have done the first book in parallel to our normal jobs and needed to find the illustrator, she needed to originate the main characters and we needed to do so many things that will be much easier for the next books.
Based on the last few months, we are certain that we can send a new Anya & Gundi book every three to four months. The first book Anya & Gundi in Cape Town will be sent the day the kickstarter campaign is concluded. The first book (should you opt for the Cape Town version) would therefore arrive at your door by the end of July. Then, every three to four months you will enjoy a brand new story and book. Of course, the larger the funding raised the better our ability to develop the books quicker (as we can organise and afford more support).
New at Kickstarter and you wonder how this works? See below :)
Risks and challenges
Delays: We have given our proposed timeline extra thoughts and because we do not want to make empty promises, we have agreed to the timelines with our partners; This includes a contractual relationship with our illustrator, the printing time confirmed with our supplier in Asia and the shipping time confirmed with our logistics partner. We have experience with our first book and therefore, are comfortable that our presented timeline is just normal and well achievable. If any, we may even be quicker as we progress with the next books which will be easier and easier to develop over time.
Traction after the campaign: The backers don’t only support us for the creation of the six books but also fund the venture to create a travel guide. For that matter we need the traction of the Kickstarter campaign to continue in the day-to-day business after we have delivered the six books to our backers. We truly believe that the six books are the perfect start and give us sufficient time to establish the business with sufficient resources and demand to continue the journey in the future. But hey, if you want to make sure we reach our long-term goals, just pledge more and we reach our stretch goals 😊
Commitment: Our excitement for this project is endless. It combines our passions for traveling and our kids. We initially didn’t intent to start with the London book until the end of the Kickstarter campaign. But the writing and research of it is just too much fun. So we started nevertheless. And while Leonie can’t wait to start with New York, Joe can’t wait to start with Mexico City… and both are Germans with loads of friends in Berlin! We have been together as a couple for almost 15 years, have been married for almost six years and have been parents now for four years. An ending of that journey not in sight. No, commitment surely will be no issue 😊Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
