What is CARTONEROS?

  • CARTONEROS is a tactical strategy game. Players clean the environment together and compete over who collects the most cardboard.
 
  • Players control groups of waste pickers, otherwise known as Cartoneros. Your primary goal is to collect cardboard
  • In a game you need to explore the map, evaluate the situation and give simple commands to your characters. 
  • Between games, you spend your cardboard to rebuild your team and equip characters with weapons & items.
  • If you lost many Cartoneros in combat, to play the next game you'll have to spend a lot of cardboard to build new ones.
  • You need to be efficient and collect more than you spend. Only then you'll rise in the leaderboards and be the real winner
  • The game world is built out of cardboard. The cardboard you collect is trash that careless people of this world threw away.
  • Cartoneros understand the value of recycling. You drive the recovery of the environment and the society - and SAVE THE WORLD.

What is boARd?

  • boARd is a paper map. It's an augmented reality marker you can use to play the game on mobile devices.
  • The game boARd is made out of square tiles that you fold out to form the play area.
  • You run the game on your mobile device and navigate the view moving your device in your hands around the boARd.
  • boARd gives you super intuitive motion controls that young children understand even better than touch controls.
  • The most unique thing about boARd is that it gives you a large space, that multiple players can use together.
  • You, your friends & family gather around the boARd and play a video game just like a traditional board game. You interact face-to-face.
  • With a boARd you can escape the isolation that came with online games & bring your friends and family together (using video games).
  • Cartoneros is about recovering the environment and the society in the game, but with boARd it's also about recovering our own community - let's bring back LOCAL MULTIPLAYER. 

We want to include you in the development, so this idea is reflected in how we make the game!

Game Overview

  • CARTONEROS is a tactical strategy game. Each player controls a crew of characters. In a game players use characters to collect cardboard from the map & between games use the cardboard to upgrade the characters
  • Players need to be efficient to rise in the leaderboards and win.

Cardboard World

  • The game takes place in a world built out of cardboard. In the real world, cardboard is really easy to work with & everybody can use it to make their own stuff
  • Players will also have the power to shape the game world, by building maps, characters, weapons, monsters and even robots.

Tactical Strategy

  • The game allows players to control a group of several characters in real time. Each player creates tactics to cut off other players from cardboard, by clever positioning of multiple characters around the map. 
  • Characters have their own strengths and weaknesses. Players need to think of best ways to combine skills of individual characters to reach goals
  • Simply put, the game is like DOTA crossed with XCOM.

Game Structure

  • The game fits 1-8 players. Players can organize themselves into any number of teams and change the feel of the game. For example, by placing all players on one team, the game becomes like an RPG with players moving and fighting monsters together. 
  • Games can be organized into play sessions that last more than one game, giving players opportunity to spread strategy over several games.

Map Editor & Generator

  • The game has no fixed story and levels. It is built around a map editor and generator that allow players to create their own worlds. You create quests by adding objectives, maps by placing structures and stories by linking maps
  • Players can easily create a map before each game, by placing some key structures onto the map together and letting the generator fill the rest
  • This is what traditional RPG game-masters or miniature wargame players do before they start to play, but it's a lot easier.

Character & Item Builder

  • The game contains a lot of customizable characters and items. Players unlock & equip them between games by spending cardboard. Items such as weapons, tools, shields or robots make characters stronger or more suitable for some tactics. 
  • Players need to be careful, as characters and their equipment, are lost when they are destroyed in a game.

Monsters

  • The game has three sorts of monsters who roam the environment and eat up cardboard. Players mostly encounter small animals that run away & large beasts that pursue and attack. But every now and then giant monsters hit the map that players need to join forces to defeat
  • Each monster has special abilities that can be acquired by characters for a limited time by destroying the monster.

boARd Interaction

  • The game can be played with a modular boARd of 16 square tiles. Each tile is 10x10" (25x25 cm) and the maximum size of this boARd is 40x40" (1x1 m). The tiles can be removed to form various shapes and can even be split into multiple smaller boARds
  • We also want players to be able to play Cartoneros in public places fitted with boARds, where you can come and play together.

CARTONEROS is currently in prototyping stages (v 0.00.3), slowly progressing towards the first alpha version (v 0.01.0).

Our initial goal is to finish animations, colorful textures, cardboard-y sounds, boARd illustration, the game core functionality and optimize for mobile devices (iOS/AD) as well as for PC's (Mac/Win/Linux). We already have all 3D Models.

Beyond this point, every future version of the game will be greatly influenced by you, our Backers, Community members and Players.

A lot of work needs to be done to make CARTONEROS a fun game with a high replay value, and this is where we can take the game together:
 

Why are we here?

CARTONEROS is a game we've been developing on and off for nearly a year, in parallel with other projects. We planned to go to Kickstarter from the start. Before we did, we developed as much as we could and put all our remaining resources into making this happen.

boARd games are a fascinating uncharted territory that digital publishers don't understand, so we see little support from them. We know players can easily explore the possibilities of boARd on their own and together we can start a new genre of video games.

We need to validate our idea with Players, to see if you are interested in playing video games the way we play board games - by meeting your friends, sharing the same space and interacting face-to-face.

We are also here to empower our Players with the ability to shape the game features and content until we release it in a more complete form. We are looking forward to work with you to build CARTONEROS, so we can all enjoy the unique gameplay it brings.

Who we are?

Estudio Antropo (ANTROPO LLC) is a new company founded by the creator of "boARd 3D" interaction method, Andrej Grek. The purpose of ANTROPO is to concentrate on the production of CARTONEROS, and will form the core of the development team. ANTROPO is working with boARd 3D on various ways of publishing CARTONEROS.

Andrej Grek is the author of CARTONEROS concept & prototype, and has previously handled production of a game called ESPIONAG3 for the boARd 3D company. The demo game shows how a game is played using a boARd and is downloadable for free.

Risks and challenges

We are well aware of how hard it is to make a good game. Games are a complex medium. Usually a game involves a lot of "moving parts" and a lot can go wrong early in the development process that makes it impossible to fix a game later.

We believe that a game needs to show some symptoms of being fun right at the start. We intend to put the core playable CARTONEROS into your hands as early as possible, so you have the opportunity to help shape the game into a game that is fun to you.

We have already done a lot of work, but plenty of other content and code will still make it into the game that could break all the fun. Since we are going to develop in a completely open fashion, our Backers will be able to test each version of the game and let us know early if we need to change something.
