Beetle Royale is a set of 2 decks of unique playing cards, a Light Deck and a Dark Deck.
- 54 Individually hand-painted cards
- Unique running beetle animation when shuffling
- poker size playing cards (63mm x 88mm, 2.5" x 3.5")
- Printed by the Legends Playing Card Company (LPCC)
- Diamond Finish stock for greatest durability, longevity and handling
- 2 Deck Variants
- Silver and Orange foil accents on the Tuck boxes!
- Interior tuck box print
Make sure you read through all the reward tiers! ------------------------->>
Both decks have the same back. This makes it easy to put both Light and Dark decks into a single game, while the front artwork still allows the decks to be split back out easily. The artwork on the back features an animation effect unlike any other deck in your collection.
This animation is done without marking the backs. Every card back is the same with a single orientation. The animation can easily be achieved by simple splitting the deck, rotating one pile and shuffling:
The deck shown in the video was created by MPC (not LPCC). Final deck will be slightly different--but in a good way :)
The Cards - Light Deck
The Cards - Dark Deck
I don't have proofs yet that include the silver and orange metallic foil for these designs, but here's the basic design concept:
Tuck Box Foil Accents
I really like the gold-like orange foil that Legends used on their Day of the Dead deck, so I'm choosing that color for the Light Deck. The Dark deck will have a silver foil accent. These are the accent parts, so imagine these parts of the artwork on the tuck boxes in the silver and metallic orange.
Interior Box Printing
Both decks will get this interior print:

This deck of playing cards will be printed by the Legends Playing Card Company, run by the talented Lawrence Sullivan. After researching countless suppliers, it became clear that LPCC is the right choice. LPCC produces the highest class of playing cards due to their attention to detail with exceptional durability, ultra-precise printing registration, and the ‘glass like’ edges of their signature ‘Diamond Cut’ process. I am sparing no expense to make this an exciting deck for both players and collectors.
Learn more about LPCC's commitment to playing cards and their quality on the LPCC Site.
Please note that the cover image and all other photos of real cards shown in the video and on this page are not done by LPCC. I made a bunch of prototypes using MakePlayingCards.com, which I highly recommend for ordering single decks (and they produce some great cards too)--but the final decks will be a bit different than what you see in the samples on this page.
Backers in the USA can add $10 to any reward tier to get:
► 8 Die Cut Stickers (one of each design)
► 3 Beetle Greeting Cards (one of each design)
Note: The $44 tier will also get 8 stickers instead of 3, but I can't change the wording on the rewards after launch.
Die Cut Stickers!
I've got die cut stickers available from StickerMule! Since I'm ordering these in bulk, I can include them inexpensively for backers in the US. Outside the US, you'll have to order from StickerMule, but their rates are great and all profits will go toward this project funding!
Hand Drawn Stickers!
There's a limited reward tier ($44) that will allow you to get one of these hand-drawn, ink sticker sheets. You'll also get 4 decks, 3 die cut stickers and a greeting card so get that while you can!
The sticker sheet will be randomly chosen from my stack:
I'm having a coloring book made by Lulu: http://www.lulu.com/spotlight/adameivy
I'm still trying to figure out if I can order these in bulk. Add-on status TBD--but you can order them right now from lulu for $8/each and all profits I collect from those sales will go toward this project funding!
Use this code on Lulu to get free shipping (until August 24th): FGA815
I have submitted a new version of the coloring book to make the art more distant from the center fold of the paper. That version is up on the lulu store.
I'll also be including Greeting Cards, printed locally in Seattle by TCC Printing.
The Making Of
It was a long time in the making and I learned a ton. I created a lot of print concepts along the way.
More information on the process can be found on the Procreate forums: http://procreate.si/forums/index.php?topic=6930.0
Stretch Goals - TBD
TBD. I decided that the decks absolutely must have the interior print and foil finish regardless of how much we overfund. Extra goals could include more stickers, more greeting cards, postcards, who knows!

Thanks to all the members of the Seattle Sketch Pistols Drink and Draw who gave me feedback and watched this thing progress.
And I couldn't have done this project over the last 18 months without my supportive and talented wife, Lena Eivy, who did the cover photo, pictures of me in my process as well as various product shots, and my loving daughter Ilya who inspired me to draw again. I <3 you two.
Risks and challenges
Just as I have spent the last 18 months designing this deck and ordering proofs to validate assumptions, I've also spent many months researching Kickstarter, shipping/fulfillment and ensuring that I have everything lined up before starting this campaign.
There are always risks involved in a project, but I am confident this one will be out by the holiday season of 2015.
I am using the highly reputable Legends Playing Card Company both for printing and fulfillment. All decks will be shipped by Legends Playing Card Company. They are already sitting on the finished artwork and ready to print and fulfill the orders when the project completes.
Because I am using the highest quality printing materials offered, it will take LPCC 3 months to complete the production.
Of course delays can happen. It's possible that quality control will call for a reprint of the order or parts of the order. Shipment will be coming from the Legends Playing Card Company fulfillment center in Hong Kong, so delays could form there. I will be doing whatever I can to ensure these orders are fulfilled accurately, timely and with the highest care for the quality of the product.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
