The calendars we use are crazily out of date.

Each morning your calendar welcomes you to a new day in 1582 in Pope Gregory XIII’s Rome. That’s the world it was designed for. But we’re doing time in the Anthropocene now.

We need new stories and attitudes about time if we want to create livable time habitats in the Anthropocene.

Our legacy calendars can't tell us meaningful stories about the time changes happening all around us. Our project is a step toward coming up with new cultural time frames.

We want to invent a truly contemporary calendar – one that actually helps us orient ourselves in the dizzying new time-habitat that is the Anthropocene.

What you will make happen:

By funding the LIVING DEEP TIME YEAR 000001 project, you will make it possible for two artists to set out into deep time as explorers of the unrecognizable epoch that is "now."

Because, before we can make the DEEP TIME CALENDAR YEAR 000001, we need time to pay deep attention to our strange new time-habitat.

But few of us have the time to wonder what that means.

By funding LIVING DEEP TIME YEAR 000001, you are funding a work of process-based, time-based art.

You are funding time—time for us to do this work.

In return, for the 365.2425 days of the solar year that runs from this winter solstice to next winter solstice (December 22, 002015 to December 21, 002016), we will research and invent daily life practices that heighten our awareness of deep time.  We will immerse ourselves in its realities.

We'll conduct field research into feral ways of being-in-time.

We'll design, live out, and report on daily life practices that have the potential to unleash your life's time from our current calendars.  We're going to notice and imagine time in ways that our current calendars make extremely difficult for us to do.

And then, we'll make a new calendar and share it with YOU.

By funding the year-long research activities of LIVING DEEP TIME YEAR 000001, you make it possible for us to generate the raw materials we need to design and produce the DEEP TIME CALENDAR YEAR 000001.

Our design process will start with questions we can't wait to explore.
What daily life practices for living deep time might we invent?  How might they inspire us to design a calendar that we can use to:

  • tune our bodies and daily choices to deep time,
  • re-score our distracted "modern" rhythms,
  • show us which “Saturday" in "August" we pass through a particular spot in galactic space,
  • embody multiple scales and speeds of time within a single rotation of Earth and experience our daily environment as a time-based medium,
  • attune to daily change by living according to the “72 seasons” identified by Japanese people hundreds of years ago,
  • connect what we eat and drink to vaster scales of time,
  • orient our local daily lives in reference to Earth time-habitats that are distant and different from our own,
  • acknowledge the unequal distribution of Anthropocenian time effects (from which no one is exempt),
  • fill our own life times with more wonder and appreciation for things and beings beyond ourselves—even in the Anthropocene?

We want you join us in exploring how deep time shapes the intimate time of daily life.

At four signal moments in our year-long process, we will send our funders field dispatches in the form of limited edition postcards–original works of mail art.

Each dispatch from LIVING DEEP TIME YEAR 000001 will describe a practice that you can try out yourself—something that we will have discovered through our process.  For example, a possible way to live, experience, and get to know new and wildly deep aspects of time in your own, local time and place.  And, in concert with others who are supporting the LIVING DEEP TIME YEAR 000001 project.

Gift sponsorships to friends or family – and you can create your own shared experiences of doing time differently in 002016.

In addition to the mail art dispatches, we'll share regular online dispatches with you.  The online dispatches will report on practices we discover and invent.  And they will preview calendar designs that we arrive at as our year-long process unfolds.

At the end of 002016, we'll share what we make with you.

Our current campaign's Reward for backers who pledge $150 or more includes a complimentary copy the DEEP TIME CALENDAR YEAR 000001, which we'll unveil at the end of 002016.

You'll also be able to order the Deep Time Calendar Year 000001 during the Kickstarter publishing campaign that we'll launch at the end of 002016. Your calendar will ship in early 002017.

In case you're still wondering: Why a Deep Time Calendar?

We humans need a practical vehicle for wayfinding in our strange new Anthropocene time habitat. We need something that, like a calendar, orients us on a daily basis—because unlike some popular Hollywood versions of the Anthropocene, we will living the changes day by day for a very long time.

The "unseasonable" weather of the Anthropocene's climate is altering what we have known to be "summer," 'fall," "winter," and "spring." The Anthropocene's unseasonable climate is generating a Fifth Season.

Our linear Gregorian desk calendars are at a loss for helping us get our footing in the dizzying, crisscrossing speeds, scales and directions of Anthropocene time.

That's why we want to create a contemporary calendar.

The design we arrive at for our calendar might not have seven days in a week and four seasons in a year. It's very likely it won't look like a grid. It might be serious and playful, concrete and abstract. We're not sure yet.

But we are sure that our calendar will NOT be designed to control or limit human experience and understanding of time. We will design it to provide relief, wonder and wayfinding for everyday life in the Anthropocene.

Check out our project's updates for more!

Maybe like us, you think it's time to change the way we humans are living time on this planet. Maybe like us, you think art can be a mysteriously powerful vehicle for doing just that.

Risks and challenges

Our project is a process-based artwork.

Like all such art, the biggest challenge is to trust that the process will take us where we hope to go. The biggest risk is that it won't. The biggest hope is that the process will surprise us and take us somewhere even more wonderful than we ever imagined.

The last 10 years of smudge studio's process-based projects have exceeded our hopes and surprised us in the best ways.

We've gotten fond of saying that what we end up making has everything and nothing to do with us. It's a paradox that we invite and then dwell in whenever we can.

So, we're confident that together, we and the process will discover something amazing that we can deliver to you.

And we think it's going to be the best work we've done to-date because we are so well prepared for this project. We are kicking off 002016 with a month-long artist residency thanks to the Santa Fe Art Institute. We have applied for other residencies to facilitate our process this coming year.

If that process stumbles, we have a strong network of amazing friends, colleagues and artists who are, like us, turning toward the Anthropocene. And we will turn to them for inspiration and generative feedback whenever we need to.

We are shaping the entire year ahead so that we can give the process our full attention and imaginations, and so that we can meaningfully compose and curate the results for YOU.

We can't yet show you a page from the calendar that we will share with you at the end of 002016.
We can't yet tell you what the practices are that we'll send to you via the mail art dispatches.
But because we've spent 10 years making process based work, we can tell you that our new project's greatest strength is the fact that we don't know how it will turn out. In that way, our project is deeply analogous to what it is about: deep time and the Anthropocene.

For some people, setting out on a year-long process without knowing where it's going would be a living nightmare. For us, it's a dream come true.

Call us crazy, but the challenges and risks of this project are exactly what feed our creativity and passion.

Like you, we're stepping off into unknowable Anthropocene Standardly Strange Time. And we're determined to make something of it that feeds our own, and hopefully others', life forces.
