About

Because everybody loves sushi and that’s not going to change. What should change however, is the growing problem of plastic pollution. This is a serious problem because ocean plastic is breaking down into increasingly smaller pieces. With as a result that it’s finding a way into our seafood, giving trash-to-table a whole new meaning.

According to the Ellen MacArthur foundation there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean by 2050. All of this will ultimately lead to the scenario that oceans will become dead and filled with plastic, meaning that we – among other things – can’t enjoy the taste of sushi anymore… That’s why we created UmiHashi, to help reduce ocean plastic by enjoying sushi!

At this very moment we’re working on a scalable process to produce these chopsticks in large numbers and great quality. We also want to make sure that the chopsticks can be recycled again and again.

Besides the positive goal of creating these chopsticks, they also look beautiful and unique. This is because all the different colors of plastic particles blend together in the design process. It makes the chopsticks beautiful, both from the inside ánd outside!

The ultimate mission is to make UmiHashi a symbol of sustainable sushi. Besides plastic pollution, the ocean is also in danger because of overfishing. Therefore we’ll only make our chopsticks available for sushi restaurants worldwide that use sustainable fish in their sushi. So if you’re holding these chopsticks in a restaurant, you’ll know that you’re eating sushi responsibly. At the moment we already have Amsterdam based sushi restaurant, DeJapanner, on board. We’re confident that other restaurants will follow their lead.

Currently we’re producing every pair of UmiHashi chopsticks by hand. We separate the plastics by kind, clean them afterwards and finally form the chopsticks by hand. Our goal is to automate this process by setting up machines and live up to the international food regulations, and of course make these chopsticks dishwasher proof! To get this process started we need to buy some expensive machines and take special tests to get through the international health- and food regulations. This way you can safely use them and put them in the dishwasher for reuse.

Risks and challenges

The biggest challenge will be to make these chopsticks safe for eating food, because without that we won’t be able to sell these chopsticks to people and restaurants. With as result that we need a green light of food law institutions before we can distribute some of the rewards.
