“Fate had no problem getting me hooked within the first few pages. I liked how Fate starts relatively small in story terms …. As the story unfolds, the world is slowly expanded to take in new locations and characters. It didn’t take me very long to decide that the dustbunny was a comic character whose story I wanted to follow”. – Stephen Ward, Irish Comic News
"The story itself creeps up on you. You are reading individual pages, thinking not much is happening and then before you know it, you are fully invested in the plot you didn’t even realize was being skillfully drip fed to you with clever writing and dialogue." Stevie Robinson, Other Worlds Than These
Hi! I’m Anthea West and I create the webcomic, Fate, which is an all-ages fantasy! Fate was born in 2014 and began it’s appearance online in late 2015. I'm now working on releasing the first 3 chapters of Fate in a gorgeous full-colour graphic novel.
Fate is an all-ages story which showcases my love for fantasy, comedy, world-building and unlikely heroes. It follows dustbunny named Bunny, the only one of his kind that’s able to speak. He is a grumpy, disgruntled loner with a bit of a superiority complex.
Bunny just wants to live out his lonely life in his tree and to read his books. Life really starts to take a turn when he finds himself stranded out at sea and loaded up on a merchant ship who's crew intends to sell him.
There, locked away in the brig of the ship, is someone who would change the course of Bunny’s life forever.
Dee is a half-demon who wants nothing more than her freedom and chickens to pet. Raised on an isolated island with no one but her grandmother to teach her the ways of the world, Dee has come to realise that there is a lot that she doesn’t know about the world, or even herself.
The two make an unlikely alliance and try and break out of the brig and get off the ship. Unfortunately, fate has other plans...
My goal is to raise the funds to release Fate Book One as a 126 page full-colour graphic novel, and to debut it at Dublin Comic Con this August.
The Cover was colour by Triona Farrell.
Fate Book One will include an exclusive prologue never before seen online and will also include all of the intermissions and journal entries.
Let's have a closer look at some of those awards
For those of you who support me over on my Patreon, you will receive a special print with any tier that you pick. This is just a small way to say thank you for your continuous support!
Who are you?
I'm Anthea, I live in Ireland and I am a freelance comic artist. I have a bachelor's degree in animation and a cat called Fitz who can jump up really high. I've been creating art and comics since I was a small bab and have been self-publishing my work since 2013. The Earthbound God was my first graphic novel, since then I've released other short comics, an artbook and a horror anthology, Sleep Tight, all while working on Fate.
Where is the money going to?
The majority of the funding is going towards the printing of the book. The rest will go into the Kickstarter fees and the postage and packaging.
Is Fate available to read online?
Is this suitable for kids?
It is indeed! Fate is all-ages so it’s suitable for kids and adults who are young at heart. My comics Sleep Tight and The Earthbound God, which are available through the Book Bundle, are also suitable for young readers.
For the "Appearance in Fate" award tier, what does "Fate appropriate" original character mean?
It means that if you choose to have your original creation appear in Fate rather than yourself, the character needs to look like it fits within the world of Fate and follows its world-building rules. Fate is a fantasy which draws inspiration from many South East Asian cultural aesthetics, which means no robots, cyborgs or green dinosaurs!
Will there be any stretch goals?
If I reach the goal, definitely! They'll mainly be extra prints, more awards for lower tiers and sketches in people's copies of Fate. What I'm really hoping for is to make enough so that I can donate books to the local Primary schools and libraries in my area.
Risks and challenges
There are three things I’m keeping in mind as I launch and promote this Kickstarter:
The timeline for this campaign, completing the book and printing is tight as Dublin Comic Con is August 12th but it's possible with a three-week campaign and a printer already picked out and ready to print books once the files are ready.
Fate Chapter three still has some pages to be completed however I'm confident that two months is plenty of time for me to complete those last few pages and delivery the best book I can. I will be posting my progress through the last of these pages and keeping you all informed on its progress.
Lastly, while this is not my first crowd funding campaign, this is my first Kickstarter and my largest campaign yet. There is the worry of not reaching my goal but those are pre-launch jitters. Compare to most webcomic Kickstarters, mine is fairly small, only looking for the bare minimum in funding. I have promotion appearances, shout outs and reviews lined up during this launch time and of course have developed a nice and supportive readership these last couple of years so I’m confident Fate Book One will reach the bare minimum at the very least.
