Highly modular gaming surface
We got tired of having to carry a huge board around or do without an exciting game space. We believe TerrainTiles solves both of these problems.
A range of flat-packed, self-assembly, interlocking tiles aimed at taking your tabletop game of choice to the next level by providing a good mixture of elevated and depressed ground, wide space and customisability while still being transportable, very sturdy and easy to assemble, break down and set up.
TerrainTiles currently consists of 11 different tile designs at a point where we're almost able to release them, but we want your help to expand upon this range and and get our first sets into gamers' hands!
As of writing we are still finalising our design layouts - the images below are our latest set of prototypes but we will be updating with further progress where applicable as we finalise the points of manufacturing and assembly instructions.
Ready to play or paint
Our tiles provide a highly functional and clean, tournament-friendly environment on which you can play straight away or paint, flock and sculpt onto, but they're of course able to be used blank.
The low-gloss surface finish of our chosen HDF (High Density Fibreboard) tiles means that getting a clean priming layer is much easier than with other materials that we tested. Many other materials that we tested would soak up far too much paint and require multiple layers of priming to get to a satisfactory point for painting.
Built on a grid
All the tiles are built on a highly rigid grid that runs under each board and allows a high degree of durability whilst still keeping assembly simple with a basic PVA or PVA-based wood glue.
After testing a couple of different base materials, we finally decided on a higher density fibreboard that makes our tiles a little weightier but far stronger than you might initially expect from something that is made of wood. Some of the extra flaring/burn marks that you see is due to the bonding in this board flaring up during the cutting process and does not affect the functionality of the product itself.
The tiles are all cut on a high-precision laser that we have in-house. Should we vastly exceed our initial goal one of our main considerations will be getting an even higher-precision detail laser possibly for future expansions to the modular terrain board sets that include small decorative elements (such as scatter scenery or interlocking buildings).
On top of this, all our boards lock together with connection 'combs' and corner 'locks'; pushing pieces into one another to ensure that they stay tightly fitted together during gameplay They're also great if you want to turn your temporary gaming space into something more permanent.
The whole board breaks down into its individual squares and connections pieces for easy transport or storage.
Every tile is 300mm x 300mm (~11.8inx11.8in) and has a 'single unit' height of 30mm (~1.18in). Every height increment on these tiles will be in factors of 30mm so that everything fits together nicely and stays consistent.
For example, the slope tile is 30mm tall at its shortest point, but 60mm tall when it reaches its peak. This way you can stack a booster tile (30mm) and a flat tile (30mm) behind it and build out that plateau!
Completed 3x3 boards
Boosters, rivers, slopes and more
Right now we have a couple of special tiles that add a good amount of variety to a space, but we're planning a few more too (details to come soon).
Rivers to break up the landscape, slopes to provide high ground for your figures or the special booster tile that slot onto the bottom of any other tile to raise the board up even higher!
We are offering 40 complete 9-tile sets (9 of the river and 9 of the balanced board sets) at a heavily discounted price initially. These will also be delivered ~3 weeks earlier (we expect) than other backer rewards.
After this point we'll sell a further 100 boards at a discounted price.
All subsequent backer rewards will also be delivered well before we start selling our tiles directly, and we will have all initial backer rewards completed and shipped by August.
Balanced tile set
Contains a range of hillsides and a small number of river tiles to create a balanced battlefield.
River tile set
Four of the nine tiles in this set are rivers, allowing you to break up the board in a number of creative ways.
Flat tile set
A simple flat board. Great as a starter to add to later or as base for sculpting onto.

What we are going to do with the Kickstarter money
Right now we have a handful of new tile designs in the works that we want to make available as soon as possible, but every tile takes close consideration so that we can make sure it's compatible with every subsequent tile in the series, as well as bringing something unique to a completed board.
Deliver on reward pledges
This one is simple, but we need to deliver on rewards already pledged for!
We would like to be able to expand our capacity for manufacture as well as accessing more precise laser CNC equipment for detailing on terrain and scatter scenery. This will only happen if we exceed our initial amount, however, as these machines are expensive.
We already have a couple of prototype carrying cases that allow easy stacking, storing and transporting of an entire kit. Right now we're figuring out how to build it efficiently enough and how we might ship it out to customers in its flat-pack form.
Scatter and buildings
Scatter terrain and buildings specifically made to compliment the TerrainTiles is something we've been very interested in over the past month or so and hope to pursue this further in the coming month.
We are already half way through our provisioning and packaging design for a retail version of this product. Although the reward pledges will be fulfilled in plain packaging we will push for a commercial product (individual tiles) for sale within the EU and US initially.

Risks and challenges
Unless our laser cutting machinery fails (such as a laser tube breakage) or we have a significant logistical issue, we will have rewards shipped by August at the latest.
We already have a supplier for our material and the machinery required in-house to cut and pack the tiles. No further outlays will need to be made.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
