Plan B

The Big Blue is a big game and attempts to be unique and break new ground on multiple fronts. It’s an ambitious design and as a result requires a big budget to develop the right way.

One of the problems we have is it is hard to get people to see how compelling a game like the Big Blue will be. If it is not clear in your mind’s eye you will less likely back it. This is totally understandable.

On the other hand I am absolutely certain that if you could try the game and see how beautiful and unique it will be, most people would not hesitate to back it, and will want to be involved in it’s creation. Time travel is not possible (yet) so I can’t go into the future, bring the game back and let you take it for a spin. But if i could... The Big Blue will get the support it needs, I am sure.

Plan B attempts to do this without the need for time travel. Here’s how it will work:

The Little Blue Stepping Stone

We will make a slice of the whole game based as a new Kickstarter campaign with a much lower $$ goal. The new campaign will include the following:

  • Clarity of gameplay (better prototype, written descriptions, and examples)
  • Better rewards at a finer granularity
  • A less ambitious scope but a fully playable game

When the Little Blue gets funded, we will build it, and then everyone can try it out and see what the potential is. We will tune the Little Blue to make it as fun as possible and
make everyone who plays it want more.

Then we will use the Little Blue and it’s success to leverage the rest of the budget to build the Big Blue at full scope.

If you can play Little Blue and feel it you will have much less doubts about the Big Blue.

More detail is pending but here is what the Little Blue will feature:

  • Fully controllable Dolphin and one other creature (TBD)
  • Song mechanics
  • 2 very large environments to explore
  • Private ocean environments (home base)
  • 10 or more significant creatures, including at least one Leviathan (giant sea-creature)
  • Quests (Story and goal based gameplay)

This game will be made available for FREE. There will be NO monetization in the game other than a direct link to the NEXT kickstarter campaign: The Big Blue, Part 2.

gotta start somewhere...

Oculus Rift

We have just received our development kit for the Oculus vr. We will research how best to support VR. I have a few ideas that we have to try out. We are all excited about the potential. If my ideas work (that is are fun and satisfying) I believe the Big Blue will be the de facto underwater title for Oculus Rift. More on this later.

The Big Blue Community & Forums

I am committed to two things:

- Creating the Big Blue one way or another
- Building a community around the game from the beginning

How the Big Blue gets funded may change but the community building will start now.

I’ve set up a forum for the Big Blue. If you are interested in participating in the creative process I would welcome you. If you are reading and posting that means you care about the game and the development process so therefore you are welcome.  Please come and sign up.

I am interested as well, If possible would you be able to look at the Unity engine on Wii U and see if this could be portable to the console? Very exciting!

I too am on board. Not everyone is so easily visionary; it's a smart gesture to provide a stepping stone or two. And, I totally thing you will be successful kickstarter-wise as well.

Just tell me when and where, and I'll bring my posse =)

Just wanted to throw my two cents in because someone else mentioned it. I, too, hope the creature cards are not a part of The Big Blue in the end. I don't know why, but I think their presence (especially exclusive ones that I may never own) is "stressful" to me.

Amazing plan for a come-back guys!! I would die to see The Big Blue project fade just because of a failed Kickstarter! Hopefully , and I'm sure it will, the Little Blue will be a nice start for the ultimate project! Are you going to post an update here on the Big Blue page when the Little Blue is ready for the pledges? Cannot wait!!! Awesome news!!!

Little Blue's a great idea to get things going. I'm very excited to hear that the Oculus Rift might be supported - I've been hoping for this since first coming across your project.

I'm actually hoping the creature cards won't be part of Little Blue. To me they were one of the biggest drawbacks. One of the reasons many people support indie games is because they don't like DLC.

Looking forward to backing the new Kickstarter when it's ready!

So we're going to get a tinier starting game for less, AND it will support Oculus Rift?

Aside from now needing to go buy one of those things, this is great news. :)

Will the creature cards still be part of the plan? I thought that was going to be pretty awesome overall.

I will definitely be there for Little Blue's Kickstarter. Looking forward to it.

This sounds like an excellent plan. Get that Little Blue Kickstarter rolling so I can throw some money at it. :)

This is definitely the approach I would take. Would The Big Blue end up "overwriting" The Little Blue, or would it be more of a sequel? I'm asking because I'm not entirely sure about whether or not it would be against Kickstarter's terms and conditions if they actually are the same game. Might be worth verifying just in case. That said, scaling things down makes perfect sense for a Kickstarter project. In fact, reading your plans for Little Blue, I think you could scale it down further. For example the other creature besides the dolphin? That would be perfect for a stretch goal. Same with the 2 environments, perhaps one could be a stretch goal? A low goal with clearly defined stretch goals (these don't have to be revealed from the start) means you're more likely to reach the goal, and it also means you can post more updates by revealing the stretch goals as the Kickstarter progresses, which also keeps the Kickstarter "active". Free and no monetization is great news. Almost too good even, as you know I'm not exactly a fan of the micro-transactions intended for The Big Blue, but I wouldn't be against The Little Blue costing a small sum of money if it doesn't have any monetizations. But if it's financially viable though, go for it, since it would obviously allow you to reach a larger audience. I'm also really looking forward to the Oculus Rift, so I'm definitely interested in seeing it used for The Little/Big Blue. Thanks for the forum as well, I hope the people posting here will join it.
