Two years ago, backed by amazing Kickstarter fans of 80s horror and sci-fi cinema, I was able to make a short film anthology entitled Grave Shivers, funded as Dreadtime Stories. It has been called an "anthology of awesome" by Dread Central and featured on Bleeding Cool News, geektyrant, MoviePilot, CreepyPasta, and io9's top short films of 2014. It was programmed at 37 film festivals, won Los Angeles' H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival audience award, and viewed a million times on Vimeo.
Anne Dark is my sophomore live-action short film with a scale twenty times larger than Grave Shivers and introduces the world to a strong female superhero role model which is rarely seen in modern cinema. I have assembled an international cast and crew of some of the most talented and diverse professionals working in entertainment today to create a female driven paranormal superhero project. If the 80s, Hellboy, Dune, and Buffy had a badass lovechild it would be Anne Dark. Help us make this film!
Anne Dark tells the story of a teen with dark superpowers who must battle her way through three mystical gates, guarded by the forces of darkness, in order to save the world and enact revenge for her sister's death. I continue to be influenced by sci-fi, fantasy, and horror genres from the 80s like The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, Blade Runner, and The Last Starfighter. The practicalities of their storytelling felt pure and original. My hope is to inspire audiences and take them to worlds uncharted by the human imagination.
Anne Dark has two renowned global artist providing concept art inspiration; Lenka Simeckova from the Czech Republic and Anton Semenov from Bratsk, Russian Federation.
Lenka Simeckova is a truly bewitching artist. She creates dark illustrations and comics that are fascinating at first sight. She is inspired by fantasy literature, with the Gothic Victorian atmospheres of Edgar Allan Poe, and the dark horror of H.P. Lovecraft. Witchcraft, mythology and horror; these are the regular themes of her work. Her characters of predilection are slender and irresistible creatures from other worlds. While macabre in nature, the visual and creative illustrations of Lenka Simeckova are also full of dark humor.
Anton Semenov is a popular internet artist known as Gloom82 on deviantart. Many of you will be familiar with his work as he created the amazing creature designs for my first Kickstarter short, Grave Shivers. While horrific and paranormal darkness echoes in the eyes of every character he creates, his unique approach also imbues a sense of beauty and isolation.
Writer/Director - Brent Sims
I began my filmmaking career with the documentary, Gutter Punks. This was discovered by Sundance advisor Robert Hawk (he's also discovered Kevin Smith and many others). I later wrote such screenplays as Evil Squirrel, further developed at Tim Allen's Boxing Cat Studios (Disney), Glory Days, further developed by Zero Gravity Management and Gloria Fan at Mosaic Entertainment Group (Sony), and most recently wrote Teddymare. I recently optioned a children's horror/sci-fi episodic TV show, Screamies, to Los Angeles-based producer Frank Lunn, that is currently in production.
Here is my first short film, Grave Shivers, funded as Dreadtime Stories on Kickstarter.
Director of Photography - Ryan Booth
Ryan is a talented self-taught cinematographer that has worked for MTV Networks, A&E, History Channel, Sony, Universal and Grave Shivers. Most recently he was the director of photography on the documentary for 20th Century FOX entitled The Revenant: A World Unseen.
Jordy Wax/Chase Smith - Co-Producers
Diverse and versatile filmmakers who are the most talented, easy going, and kind creatives around. Their unique ability to lead a crew, shoot, and fly a killer drone camera is beyond this world. Their work can be seen in Grave Shivers and Jordy's camera work can also been seen in 20th Century FOX's The Revenant: A World Unseen.
Visual Effects Supervisor - Joseph Harford
Joseph Harford and his amazing team at Airship Images has worked on Forza Horizon 2, Ryse: Son of Rome, Grave Shivers, and was contracted to create characters and environment artwork for Apache’s Hulkbuster experience.
We have a rather unique vision for Anne Dark, a complex futuristic victorian styling that is invaded by Alexander McQueen, Rick Owens, 1920s military visuals and Japanese post-apocalyptic design. High fashion and dark couture paint a lush fabric landscape for our characters. Many designers are assisting in bringing the costumes to life including Aidan Rae Vitta(her initial concept designs seen below), as well as Fashion Designer Eva Zolnar from Riga, Latvia, Lena Quist, Fashion Designer from Berlin, Germany.
Practical Effects - Chris Hamburger
Chris' unique approach and passion for robots and sci-fi culture rings true in every one of his unique works of art. Chris is creating custom gear for military characters in Anne Dark. Chris' work includes mask making for Marvel and props for AMC's upcoming Preacher.
Practical Effects - Alex Breijak
Alex brings a unique and dark vision for practical effects to the project. His monsters, blood, and props will bring multiple scenes to life.
Monster Sculptor/Designer - Josh Hardie
California based artist with an insatiable hunger to create monsters, creatures and characters. Josh currently lives in Orange County where he designs, sculpts, molds, casts and paints his creations. You can also find his gallery work, which he gives credit to his maniacal inner child "Helix", at Hyaena Gallery in Burbank, CA.
Production Designer - Claire Sanchez
The super talented Sanchez has worked on 20th Century Fox's Maze Runner, Anchor Bay's The Demented, Fox Searchlight Pictures' Knights of Glory, and Grave Shivers.
Sound Designer - Jesse Kees
Jesse Kees, a truly gifted sound designer, worked on my first Kickstarter project, Grave Shivers, and 12 Years A Slave, The Brothers Bloom, Elysium, Olympus Has Fallen, and Fright Night 2.
Composer - Cris Velasco
Cris is an award-winning composer of epic orchestral, dark experimental and modern hybrid music scores for video games, film and television. His past work includes Clive Barker's Books of Blood, Assassins Creed Unity: Dead Kings, Tron Evolution, Mass Effect 3, and Bloodborne.
Anne Dark Theme Song - Fink by Brooke Waggoner

The cast, left to right(top row); Linnea Gregg(Anne Dark), Darby Matthews(Sister Agnes), Bianca Siplin(Madam Shadow). Left to right(bottom row); Claire Seneca(Tikon Mother Superior), Sam Cobean(Stuff), and Matt Story(The Master).
There are a variety of super unique rewards for backers. From wearables like t-shirts and hoodies to coffee mugs(or tumblers, your choice) based on concept artwork from Anne Dark. There are also rewards that include digital downloads, special edition digital downloads, original artwork, and top quality art prints of concept artwork from the movie. There are also VIP levels where you can be an extra or actor in the film as well as association producer and executive producer levels for those individuals wishing to support Anne Dark.
Where does your money go?
I’m hiring the best crew and talent money can buy. That crew is utilizing the best filmmaking camera equipment possible. Our post production team are some of the most talent people working in entertainment. The majority of the budget will go to production and post production. Almost every shot of this film project has practical or digital visual effects so we're doing incredible digital work that revivals Hollywood films.
Budget breakdown: 40% Production, 40% Post Production (Visual Effects), 10% Perks, 10% Kickstarter/Processing(what they charge to create and process a film on their amazing platform).
What happens if we exceed the estimated Kickstarter goal? We will introduce the stretch goal rewards for backers and expanded digital visual effects, color correction, and musical score/sound mastering efforts in post production. It will look bigger and better!
How does Kickstarter work?
Backers pledge an amount and choose a reward. At the end of our 40-day Kickstarter campaign, if the combined total of all pledges for our project meets the goal amount, then the credit cards of those who pledge are charged and I receive the funds to finish the film. If I don't meet the goal, then the money is not withdrawn from your account and no rewards are provided. This makes me sad. If the campaign exceeds my financial goal then the extra funds will be used to make the movie even better. All funds raised are used directly in the finishing of this film.
Please support Anne Dark however you can. Thank you for your time.
Risks and challenges
Filmmaking is always a unique challenge. I have a small advantage that will lead the project to a successful completion on time and on budget -- I've been working in the film industry for a number of years and have a trusted team of kind, supportive, and hardworking filmmakers that have my back. This coupled with amazing and dedicated Kickstarter fans who want to see the magical storytelling from the 80s return I will be able to create a new vision from original work. It is my goal to provide a proof of concept short film along with a feature screenplay that will peak the interest of production companies. This will allow for a longer format version of this short project. This is the same path I followed with "Grave Shivers," and one of the shorts("Teddymare") is now a feature screenplay being shopped to financing groups and producers in Los Angeles. Gifts requiring your presence (set tours, acting in the film, dinners, etc.) mean you must pay for your own travel/lodging unless otherwise noted. Any age can attend the set tour, as long as minors (under 18) are accompanied by an adult (over 18 years old). Please help us make this project. Give anything you can, it will be greatly appreciated!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
