Wordbits | Alphabet magnets that actually hold stuff
Stretch goal reached!
We are thrilled to announce that we reached our 200% funding stretch goal and will be releasing a Bone colour of Wordbits magnets.
Alphabet magnets that actually hold stuff.
Everyone loves the fun of alphabet letters from the 80’s & 90’s, but we wanted some that could actually function as real magnets too. Good looking ones.
So we created the ultimate alphabet magnets. The same lighthearted fun, now strong and stylish too.
What exactly are they?
- Matte black
- Recycled plastic
- Unique designer typeface (the first of its kind, specifically designed for alphabet magnets)
- Quality magnets (hold approx 520g)
- BPA-free & phthalate-free
- Pack of 60 letters and symbols
- An ideal gift
Style with a conscience
We are big believers in buying once and buying well. While there are many cheap alphabet letters on the market, we are offering a unique combination of strength and style which does not currently exist. And with premium design touches like a matte finish.
Who says that just because you have little ones your house needs to look like a kindergarten? These letters will last long past when your kids can start leaving cheeky notes on the fridge for you, but their sophisticated design works for all ages and styles (we designed them for our own, adult homes).
Why a custom typeface?
The original Fisher Price alphabet letters from the 1970's are a mixture of Din and Univers typefaces, while more modern versions use styles such as Cooper Black and Futura Bold. In all cases the typeface has been disfigured in order to conform to the manufacturing requirements.
We considered many factors when designing the typeface, including the manufacturing process, requirements of injection moulding, insights from how alphabet letters are used in homes and how we could maximise the letters (for example the M and W are interchangeable, X and O can be used for tic-tac-toe).
In addition to the current English language characters, we have already created the typeface with characters from 32 different languages and hope to introduce Wordbits extension packs in the future (French, German, Spanish, Danish etc). We have plans to add numbers to the packs too.
We believe Wordbits is the first typeface in the world designed especially to be made as alphabet magnets.
How strong are they?
We spent a long time prototyping for Wordbits in order to strike the perfect balance of form, function and fun. One letter has enough strength to hold approximately 200g (a postcard or photograph) or two letters can hold a greeting card. We have purposefully chosen not to make the magnets stronger than this so they remain easy to move around. The letters are fun for all ages, easy to click on and pull off or move around.
Stick 'em everywhere
Purchase 1, 2, 3, 6 or 15 packs. Each pack contains 60 letters and symbols. The more packs you buy, the more you can say.
If you require specific words or phrases we recommend checking the letter distribution below to see how many packs you'll need:

Annabel & Shanna, the founders of Wordbits, work in the creative industry having met many years ago working at M&C Saatchi before both separately moving to Copenhagen in Denmark. Annabel is a Strategist who has worked with clients ranging from Google to Greenpeace. Shanna is an Account Director AKA a pro at keeping projects on time and on task.
One of our strengths is knowing what we don't know, which is why we have engaged a team of experts in each field to help make Wordbits. Trine Rask and Muggie Ramadani, the pair who designed the typeface, are an award winning Type Designer and Creative Director. Our engineer Andrei has more than 20 years experience with injection molding. We also have a team of manufacturing professionals who are helping with everything from project scoping and timelines to quality control.
Why are we crowdfunding?
Our goal for the crowd-funding campaign is to cover the cost of manufacturing moulds and allow us to place a "minimum quantity" order with our manufacturers.
Risks and challenges
As we are relying on manufacturing partners there is always a risk in outsourcing - these include time delays, quality assurance and accuracy of cost estimates. We have expert partners who will be managing manufacturing and quality control for us to mitigate risks.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
