I'm an illustrator and been self-employed in the creative industry for the past three years now.
This business is pretty much a one-man-show, so I know a fair bit about how you can easily get stuck in a rut,
you know, feel like there's not really been any progress in a long time, when
money is really tight again this month and maybe it's finally time to get a
So I created this publication which I named Visual Thoughts which is basically an annual review and celebration of my creative practise.
Once a year I go through all my sketchbooks, journals, notebooks and all the piles of paper that have accumulated over the past few months. And every time I'm amazed by what I find!
If you're a creative yourself you should really make this a regular thing, it's amazing how much we just forget or disregard. Going back through all that behind-the-scenes-stuff usually sets off an avalanche of new ideas for projects, stories, compositions, colour-combinations - anything really.
And it really does give me a sense of achievement and tells me that maybe the past year wasn't wasted after all.
There have been 3 issues to date and this campaign hopefully will enable me to print the 4th. The first one is from 2012 when I was still at art school and together they really illustrate quite well how my work has changed and developed since then.
Their format also mirrors the type of sketchbook I preferred to work in at the time so they're all quite different really. As you can see there's a trend of them becoming smaller in size. The latest one is the smallest so far since I mainly worked in small sketchbooks recently.
It's a cute little square format, 15x15 cm, and it's got about 80 pages of my recent sketchbook work. Here's a small selection of what you can expect to find inside.
Some early stage developmental work for client commissions,
Some diary comics from my personal life,
Drawings of places I've visited and people I've met,
And a bunch of random doodles.
I'd also love to use this campaign to re-print the first two issues which have been sold out now for a good while. There have been a few requests recently for re-prints of these. So here's your chance to get them again!
If you like the concept of this series and would like to have a look inside one or more of these issues then please support this campaign! I appreciate every single pledge and share and want to thank you in advance for your attention and interest.
And if you're an artist yourself and this inspires you to create your own annual review practice of any sort I'd be delighted to hear about that too!
So, yeah! Let's make this happen! Thank you!!
Risks and challenges
The risks and challenges are very limited for this project.
The book is pretty much done and I know which printer I'll be working with. I've even ordered the printed proof already which you can see in the photos.
I have been self-publishing books for over 5 years now as well as delivered one successful Kickstarter Campaign in the past which makes me confident that I will succeed in completing this project without any problems.
