Everyone who works at a farm knows time is precious and the space in your pocket is limited. If you’ve ever been in a situation thinking about what horse is the one you’re supposed to pick up, or even walked away with the wrong horse for lack of immediate access to its microchip data, let us assure you...we’ve been there!
The Anitar Bullet is a device for breeders, vets, horse professionals, farmers, and rescuer.
The founding story of Anitar goes back to a misty afternoon at a field in Kjós, a farm area close to Reykjavik. Karl Már, our founder, keeps his horses there. As it’s common at Icelandic farms, horses free-range and mingle with horses of other riders. Sometimes, their tint differs. Other times, they happen to look and behave identically. As Karl’s horse is usually very shy and afraid of people, Karl – without any hesitations – picked up the shy, grey horse and not the one that walked up to him. He was pretty embarrassed when he got a call why his horse was still standing out on the field from a lady who couldn’t find her favorite companion, and who, as you can imagine, wasn’t amused.
You might be able to recognize your horse immediately, but what’s with all the other people who have day-to-day access to your horse? Breeders, trainers, farriers, caretakers, or other riders; can you be sure they pick the right horse?
Using the Anitar Bullet
Up to this date, there hasn’t been a reliable, easy to use solution suitable for the needs of today’s farmers. Most RFID animal tag readers are expensive, clunky, and require the user to run all operations manually. Besides that, the common procedure consists of scanning a horse, then driving somewhere to access a computer with an internet connection to then look up the microchip number in WorldFengur or some other livestock database. The longer you think about it, the more you might wonder why it’s taken so long for someone to innovate this area of livestock farming!
In the past two years and after Karl’s horse incident, we’ve been developing a solution that meet today’s needs of veterinarians, farmers, and breeders. The Anitar Bullet is a RFID solution that bridges between livestock and various databases to help track, register, and identify animals in a snap, all with the help of the device you carry around in your pocket at all times anyway: your phone.
How to use the device
There’s no need to charge the Anitar Bullet. The device is compatible with iOS and Android. The hardware is light, sleek, and fits in any pocket or can be placed worry-free anywhere at the stable for shared use, given its water-repellent nature. The RFID technology allows for codes to be read from a distance of up to ten centimeters, which will then automatically display in your Anitar app, which you can download in the app store to track your Icelandic horses.
Where we're at
After having built several prototypes of the Anitar Bullet, developing the necessary software, testing the device extensively, and securing access to WorldFengur’s data, we’re ready for production. There’s just one catch: we cannot realize this project and hit the minimum order amount at the manufacturer of our choice without your help. We need to find at least 250 committed and forward-thinking farmers, breeders, veterinarians, and horse lovers who believe in our vision and choose to help us make the Anitar Bullet a reality. We’ve done the hard work, so we hope you share our vision and accompany us through our production process. We want your input, your feedback, and we hope for your support.
We believe it’s time to start the technical revolution at the stable and we would love to have you join us! Please pledge to this project, tell your friends, call the person who taught you horseback riding, and help us make this the most successful Kickstarter project Iceland’s seen to date! Hobb, hobb!
To create a sleek, water-repellent device, we’ve used ABS plastics. Given that many times, these sort of devices run out of battery rather quickly or right when you need them to work most, our device is directly connected to your phone (iPhone5 or Android 4.1 or newer). Once you open the Anitar app, you’ll be able to operate the device without any complicated pre-installment. The Anitar Bullet is also small enough to easily fit into your pocket. With 120g, it weighs as much as an apple. Speaking of apples, it’s so small (15cmx5,5cmx1,6cm) you’d have space to bring a drink or a snack for yourself.

Risks and challenges
You might have not heard of a tech startup from Iceland yet, but you might not be surprised that the first time you come across one, it’s a horse tech company. As we focus on farm technology, we’re operating in an industry that hasn’t been as radically innovated in the past as many other branches. We’re lucky to have received a lot of support from the Icelandic government who believe in our mission: to make livestock farming easier and more efficient.
We’ve proven we’re capable of developing a well-functioning software product, which you can already download in the app store. This experience has proven to us we have a strong team and people we can rely on. But given software can only go so far, we knew we had to hire some additional team members and realize a hardware solution to really make the lives of our customers and users easier.
Our early prototypes have demonstrated that the core technology works well and that we have a great team and partners supporting the vision. However, launching a hardware project, we know there will be challenges with manufacturing, production, international shipping, and more. Our promise is that we'll rise to meet all these challenges, and will always remain transparent about what phase we’re at to keep you in the loop and co-create a product with you that won’t be an expense, but rather an investment, for you to gain more time and focus on the things that truly matter: your animals. Not their microchip codes.
