About this project
Quick n Dirty : The Ask
Looking to raise $3k to help fund the fan website of The Nobbit - a machinima spoof of JRR Tolkein's "The Hobbit"
What's in the website?
The website - http://www.thenobbit.com is host to a collection of concept art, music, commentary, updates, sponsors and links to the actual Nobbit movie.
How would you describe this film?
Paraphrasing of a prominent machinima blogger: What do you get when you mix Cheech and Chong, Blazing Saddles, Monty Python, Snow White, Shrek and Tolkien's The Hobbit? Well you get The Nobbit - an irreverent tale of adventure featuring a cantankerous, foul mouthed old wizard, a vain, metro-sexual dwarf and a courageous but reluctant Nobbit. This full length animation is a machinima fanfilm spoof of Tolkien's classic tale. It follows the general story line of the tale but it goes off in a tangent through funny musical numbers and loads of outrageous jokes sure to make some of you blush.
What inspired you to do this film story?
Well since Peter Jackson's film was at the time of this inspiration, delayed, and i so wanted to watch a Hobbit film, i decided to make my own. Thinking my machinima version would not would survive a comparison with Ralph Bakshi's 1970's animated version, i decided to make a spoof. The software i was using (Reallusion's iClone) seemed ready to tackle a one animator project, and my social network is an email reach of many talented and creative artists, so I, along with Andrew and Phil (who play Thorend and a Troll respectively) sat down to spin the tale for the The Nobbit. It is based of course on Tolkien's The Hobbit and while it follows the general story line of the tale, it portrays the events in a slightly twisted way.
What went into the making of this film?
Imagine an animation studio of 1 person augmented by his social network. After a three week script writing session, i spent hundreds of man hours in designing the sets and costumes, and characters, auditioned and identified the actors that would make up the 25 speaking roles and wrote the spoofed lyrics for many of the musical numbers in the movie. A renowned machinima artist - GoofParade - help arrange a number of the musical performances as well as the movie score. In addition, most of the actors performed their own musical numbers helped by a number of YouTube musicians who lent their instrumental abilities to help score the film, and a few wrote and performed original songs for the movie. It's taken a year do all the animation/direction and editing (mixed with real life schedules/activities) for the first 2 parts (~1 hour) and some additional time on completing the last 30 minutes.
What do you need the funding for?
I am asking for help to support the maintenance of the website which i hope to keep alive through the period of time when the Peter Jackson's The Hobbit films (2 of them) will be released (~3 to 4 years). This includes domain name registration, bandwidth allocation, space to host and stream numerous media files and to enter it as well to numerous film festivals around the globe. 60 minutes of the film are done, the last 30 minute is in production and a flash based website for it has been created. The website will host many of the media assets of the film including concept art, photos, cast commentary, music, as well as the movies themselves.
