About

Introduction

Whether you are an art lover or an animal enthusiast, this is an exhibition that will arouse comments and passionate interest.

This is the first exhibition ever made dedicated to animals in history of art, ranging from the Renaissance to the late eighteenth-century. It will feature over a hundred paintings, acquired from museums and private collections worldwide: we’re giving life to a congeries of animals of a unique kind, a species made immortal through the craftsmanship of its painters.

About the exhibition

In the history of art, animals of different kinds and species have been portrayed and many of them often concealed a symbolic meaning. As a matter of fact, the relationship between animals and art is a matter of iconography: for instance, did you know that the tiny dog of the Arnolfini portrait by Jan van Eyck represents marital fidelity? Did you know that the Unicorn in art symbolizes royalty and chastity? And think about the power of all those biblical characters like St Jerome and the lion, John the Baptist and the lamb...

The idea behind the exhibition is to bring to the public’s attention the essential role that animals often had in the history of art as well as to raise awareness towards animal welfare. Furthermore, this is an opportunity to learn how the alliance between man and animal has changed - or stayed the same - over the years.

Of the vastness of art history, we focused on a programme of ten thematic sections:

  • Animals in sacred paintings: symbols and allegories
  • Animals in paintings with a mythological subject
  • Animals and man: a millennial relationship
  • Dogs
  • Cats
  • Fish, reptiles and insects
  • Birds
  • Farm animals
  • Dwarves against animals
  • Exotic and imaginative animals

Thanks to the partnership with the Department of Natural Sciences of the University of Pisa, we’ll include essential information on ancient races and their evolution throughout the centuries.

The WWF cooperation and our help to the "Backing the Rhinos to survive" project

By virtue of its cultural, artistic and scientific importance, WWF gave us their patronage: so significant to us as we want to bring to the visitors attention our concern towards themes such as the conservation of biodiversity, the protection of wildlife as well as the fight against illegal hunting. We will donate part of the amount we will raise to the WWF safeguard project "Backing the Rhinos to survive", a conservation campaign to protect rhinos in Africa and Asia through microchipping and translocation to safer areas.

Why we need your support: the catalogue and the virtual tour project

We need a hand to help cover the catalogue printing costs as well as the virtual tour development. The catalogue will consist of 260 color pages and will be published by Silvana Editoriale, one of the most respected italian art-book editors, and it will include all these paintings as well as all the stories and curiosities behind each artwork. Furthermore, we want to bring all the backers, wherever they are in the world, along with us in a virtual tour of our rooms, to take a thorough look at all the paintings and give them the chance to learn everything about these masterpieces. An immersive, mesmerizing and very detailed virtual circuit among creatures, pets and beasts and the artful brush strokes of their painters.

The curator

The exhibition is curated by Davide Dotti, an italian art historian and curator from Brescia, Italy.

So far he curated 22 exhibitions in prestigious museums and cultural institutions both in Italy and abroad and today he’s in charge of Palazzo Martinengo’s exhibition space, where “Animals in Art” will be hosted.

Opening dates and venue

The exhibition will run from 19th January to 9th June 2019 in Brescia (ITALY), right in the old city center, where the beautiful Renaissance Palazzo Martinengo dwells: that is our exhibition’s venue.

Thank you for your support and we hope you can come and pay us a visit in Brescia!

Risks and challenges

The only risks for this project are undertaken by the Palazzo Martinengo association, in charge of the exhibition. The catalogue layout as well as the virtual tour project are already being prepared. We still need to be sustained to cover these expensive costs and to be aided in the "Backing the Rhino" campaign associated to this exhibition. Thanks.
