UPDATE on 10/25: Stretch goals announced! Look to the end of this story for details. :)
I love independent arts, which is one reason I’ve launched this project. Being true to your creative self, being true to your art, is one of the most courageous forms of profound resistance against the parts of society that only want to grind us up and make us ordinary and tractable, and that’s why indie artists are so dear to me. I love the creative, out-of-bounds spirit they embody, and that this avenue of expression allows and nurtures. This project is my first Kickstarter campaign, and I admit I’m a little nervous about it, but I believe that taking healthy professional risks can lead to growth, so here we go!
My project, THE SHARP EDGES OF WATER, is a book of stories as much as it’s a collection of poems. In it, the characters swerve between the rain-drenched, tree-lined, concrete plains of Houston and the voluptuous, dynamic terrain of Los Angeles. These characters face multiple realities, and though they’re earnestly grounded, they sometimes swim in the waters of magic realism. Their story is both relatable and a little bit surreal.
I’ve been a writer for most of my life and work in multiple genres. I have a degree in English and Creative Writing from the University of Houston with a concentration in Poetry. I’ve also taught Creative Writing for over twenty years, and for most of that time in a multi-genre writing program, so I’ve had the opportunity to do a deep dive into the study of fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, and even plays and screenplays. In my own writing, sometimes I like to blend the lines between these different forms of creative expression.
My work has appeared in over two dozen anthologies and journals. My poetry has been published by Waxwing, Haikuniverse, Yellow Chair Review, and Mutabilis Press, among others. You can find my essays in New Reader Magazine, Femmeliterate, and The Milk of Female Kindness––An Anthology of Honest Motherhood. I also write fiction; the 3rd edition of my urban fantasy Finis. is coming out this fall from Odeon Press. If you want to take a look at some of my other work, you can also check out my blog, Sappho’s Torque, at http://www.SapphosTorque.com.
I hope you’ll support me in this project; if you do, you can look forward to some fantastic updates, including poetry and art and short films connected to THE SHARP EDGES OF WATER, as well as some pretty wonderful perks, listed in the sidebar. At this time I'd also like to send a shout-out to my friends Adam Holt, who has helped guide me through this Kickstarter process; Christa Forster, for helping me with filming at a moment's notice; and Ryan Gillentine, who made my introductory video.
Thank you so much for seeing me, and I hope you’ll join my campaign!
UPDATE on 10/25: Stretch goals announced!
We are so close to meeting our original goal, which is AMAZING and WONDERFUL, and I'm so very grateful to all of you for helping to make that happen. If we meet that original goal, this project will fund, and I'm so thrilled to be able to share it with you soon. But as is often the case with Kickstarter projects, there's an opportunity to stretch past the bare minimum of our original goal to cover any unforeseen contingencies in the publishing/production/marketing process. If this project can get to $5,000 in the next couple of weeks, I'll add MORE perks at every level of contribution. Here they are:
add to every level:
• FINIS. bookmark
• 1 handwritten postcard poem from me (written by me)
add to $100 level and above:
· 10-minute manuscript development consultation (I hear all the time from people that they have a great story idea and wish they could just write it. Tell me your story idea, and let's talk about ways you can actually write it!)
add to $200 level and above:
• one year of monthly postcard poems from me (written by me)
add to $300 level and above:
• book club appearance by me (in person or via video chat) for either THE SHARP EDGES OF WATER or FINIS.
add to $400 level and above:
• I'll lead a 2-hour poetry workshop for you and your friends (up to 6 people, 1 poem up to 2 typed pages each)
add to $750 level:
• Author’s Dinner Party (I'll host dinner for you and a guest with a handful of other writers)
You can help make these fabulous stretch goals happen by becoming a backer, by increasing your pledge (if you're already a backer), and by sharing the link to this campaign with others.
Thank you for your support! :)
Risks and challenges
I've done what I can to minimize risk here, but the biggest one is that the project won't fund. Otherwise, everything is ready to go! My professional team of editor, book designer, and cover artist/designer have been amazing and do excellent work, and I'm so grateful for them. The only other significant challenge I can see is possibly not getting the perks mailed out on time if there's an unforeseen delay in the book's production schedule, but I've tried to budget for this so that it won't be an issue.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
