The Internet was a mistake. We're making an album to fix it.
Hi! We're the Doubleclicks: Aubrey Turner (she/her) and Laser Malena-Webber (they/them). We're a sibling musical duo from Portland, Oregon, who make indie folk music about love, science, and anxiety. We have a cello, we have a ukulele, we have a cat keyboard that goes meow meow meow.
We're known for making music on the Internet with you, other human beings. We also tour and play places like PAX, the JoCoCruise, SF Sketchfest, GenCon, and comics shops, game stores, and comedy clubs. We've released a handful of albums, three of them through the help of Kickstarter, and we want to do it again! Are you ready?
ABOUT THE ALBUM:
The time since our last album has been strange! For the first time since our inception, the Doubleclicks took a year-long break from performing and recording to live "real lives." We even got day jobs for a minute there! Did you all know that there are entire groups of people in the world who live their lives OFF of the Internet? It's WILD.
Our break taught us a whole lot! One of the things we learned is that we are pretty bad at day jobs. And also, reality is pretty cool. And also, the Internet has ruined a lot of stuff. We learned that, then we came back together to write the longest, realest and funniest Doubleclicks album yet. We're also going to bring this big rad album on tour - even to Europe!
"The Book Was Better" is about a lot of things: gender, dogs, cats, anxiety, Halloween, and pizza are some of the things. But the big theme is this: We spend too much time yelling on the Internet, and we should all try something else. Certainly we can't stop using the Internet, that would be ridiculous. But just a tiny break sometimes, yeah — that's probably good. Go to a museum. Go roller skating and break your arm. Try to throw a birthday party and don't cancel it when you get overwhelmed at the very idea of human interaction.
It's a comedy album.
- Clifford the Big Red Dog — body image and a dog
- Ode to a Summer Retail Job — a song about wet money
- Afterparty for One — an ode to frozen pizza
- Boundaries — a song about Laser's cat, Marzipan. She's perfect.
- Something I Can Hold — a song about the House on The Rock
- We're All Gonna Die — this one's a lot of fun!
- Happy Birthday, Nobody Hates You — a celebration for the anxious
- Nobody gets it — A Halloween song
- I'm Winning — a song about being genderqueer or maybe videogames
- Brand New Year — a song about the best-laid plans
- I Don't Wanna — no!
- The Ballad of Millie Rosa Jane — a sea shanty?
- Panic —it's gonna be ok
Check out this video for our new song "I'm Winning" — animated by a group of 16 incredible queer artists!
This album is made with all ages in mind — there are no swears, but also it's not like, "just for kids." It's the music we like, and it's a lot happier and funnier than the last record.
The Doubleclicks are a crowd-funded operation. With no major record label, we depend completely on our audience to help us make our art. The advantage of that - and this is huge - is that there is nothing between us and you. Our music goes straight from our hearts to your ears. We love it. It means so much to us to be able to make just the thing we want and just the thing you want, too. If you don't like it, we can't make it. So we do our very best.
We need your help to pay for recording and our studio rent, to produce CDs, merchandise, and promotional items for the album, to get the necessary software, instruments, and plug-ins, to master and mix the music, to submit the music to iTunes and other music stores, and to generally "create something from nothing."
We thank you for supporting art and artists, and for making the world more beautiful!
In exchange for your pledge, we have some rad stuff you can get.
You spoke and we listened — you love enamel pins, and you want one of our little featherless dinosaur friend. PLUS, we'll have a new badge-style pin from a VERY EXCITING ARTIST as well, the design will be released very soon! If you order a pin, you will be able to choose from these options!
This new Doubleclicks t-shirt design will be available in "unisex" (S-4XL) and "ladies" cuts (S-4XL) and for the first time, this Doubleclicks shirt will also be available in youth sizes (XS-XL)!
When you first open this box, you'll see a little pouch to put your phone in. Set it aside and start to enjoy this immersive "real world" experience. We bring you to a land... before constantly refreshing twitter and arguing on facebook and getting group texts and work emails 24/7. This is an entire (approximately 10" x 8" x 4") box of activities, gifts and fun stuff that you can appreciate without your phone.
The box will include: the Doubleclicks-designed "reality book" of activities and puzzles (see below), a way to listen to a Doubleclicks song without any devices, and more! You'll be able to make something, solve some puzzles, play a game, learn a new skill, send a letter, and give a gift. There will be a rock, some string, and some exclusive Doubleclicks merch. We are extremely excited about this reward.
REWARD NOTE: anyone who backs at the "reality box" level (or above) will get both enamel pins, a signed CD, and a shirt or tote. This isn't what it says in the reward level, and though we can't change the text of the reward level, it is TRUE. At the "two boxes" level, backers will get *two* shirts and two sets of both pins.
Love reality, but hate boxes? This custom Doubleclicks "field notes"-style notebook will be chock-full of reality-based activities. Use this word search and find all of the neat, phone-free hobbies you could experiment with! Get some tips about crafting and photography! Read some aphorisms and affirmations! Play a game! Does the whole thing add up to a big puzzle? You bet it does!
Don't see the combination of items you're looking for? Don't worry - you'll be able to buy "add-ons." That means, after this Kickstarter ends, you can add extra CDs, t-shirts, books and pins to your order. If your level only includes one pin and you want to get the other one, you can! If your whole family needs t-shirts, you can get them! You don't need to do anything now in order to do that. The only thing that will not be available as an add-on is the D&D game.
We have been blessed with a whole bunch people who help us every day to live our arty crowdfunded lifestyle. Thank you all so very very much. Some specific shout-outs: Thank you Mom and Dad for your support! Thank you Kim Newmoney for all these rad new band photos! Thank you Justin and Richard for your patience. Thank you Tuesday for your INCREDIBLE help on this page. Thank you to our podcast listeners for supporting our songwriting! Thank you MakeThatThing for making it possible for us to do complicated stuff!
Risks and challenges
This is our fifth Kickstarter project! We learn a lot each time, of course, but we have delivered our last three albums on time! The big differences this time are: more songs, and more time. We will be working with a few more folks than usual to launch this baby into the world, but we have also carefully scheduled our time to make sure that we can allow for lots of humanness (error) in that process. We're also planning to limit our stretch goals this time, so that we can be sure to focus on finishing everything we promise.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
