Welcome! I've written a book! It's about running Kickstarters, and building an online audience. In this Kickstarter project, you can pre-order the book and get some exclusive extras, as you help me build a business and launch this book in the best way possible!
WHAT I'M MAKING
I wrote a book!!! It is based on my experience with the Doubleclicks (my band), and my work consulting and running crowdfunding projects for other folks. I break down the step-by-step of preparing for a crowdfunding campaign, which involves a LOT of preparing and building an online audience. I've got a lot of thoughts and opinions, complete with ideas and step-by-step plans, and I'm real excited to have this all in a book!
The book includes interviews with:
- Kickstarter Music lead Meredith Graves on creating unique projects
- Hayley Rosenblum, former Kickstarter Music staff and current Patreon Manager for Amanda Palmer, on finding the project that's right for your audience
- Veteran Music Journalist David Greenwald, on getting press coverage for your music and project
Why should you trust me, Laser Malena-Webber?
In 2011, I started a band called the Doubleclicks. We posted a lot of videos online and made silly, nerdy music. Using the Internet, our fans, and crowdfunding, we raised $80,000 on our first Kickstarter. Since then, we've charted on billboard three times thanks to successful Kickstarters. We've raised over $100,000 on Patreon for music videos and more on Kickstarter for albums.
In 2015, I started my consulting company to with other artists to help level up their bands with crowdfunding, and I've now worked with over a dozen clients to fund successful projects, in genres from comedy to classical to punk. I'm an officially endorsed Kickstarter Expert. I'm cool and fun and I have blue hair and a cat. I love what I do, and I'm very excited to have this book, so I can teach a bunch of people at once instead of just one at a time!!
Laser Malena-Webber has compiled a veritable Hitchhiker’s Guide for independent musicians hoping to harness the benefits of crowdfunding. Comprehensive enough to help anyone from rank novice to nascent mogul, Laser dishes practical info and wisdom using clear language and easy humor. You’ll still need to do the work yourself, but Laser’s guide will be your companion for crowdfunding success. - Storm DiCostanzo singer-songwriter, Paul and Storm
I’ve done a few crowdfunding projects, and I’ve probably made every possible mistake. Wouldn’t it be great if I’d had some kind of a guide, perhaps in book form, something that started with the basics, clarified the dizzying array of possibilities, and then connected my dream with the practical steps I needed to take to make it happen? This is that book. Crowdfunding is a powerful magic spell, and Laser is the Hogwarts professor who can teach you how to cast it in a way that works for you. - Jonathan Coulton, independent musician, Emmy and Tony-nominated songwriter, co-host of NPR’s Ask Me Another
The book is happening! It has been written and professionally edited, and it's in production at Berklee Press / Hal Leonard Publishing. So why am I on Kickstarter? This project has four goals:
- Spread the word and build excitement for my book!
- Provide an opportunity for you to buy the book directly from me with some extras!
- Fund the creation of an online video seminar about crowdfunding and audience-building!
- Fund a small tour where I can bring my seminar to schools/conferences, so I can teach more people about what I've learned about crowdfunding and the online music business!
WHAT YOU CAN GET
I'm gonna send you a copy of my book! It's a great book! note: I cannot pre-sell digital copies of the book, though the book will likely be available as an ebook on all the regular platforms when it comes out. If that's your preference, you may want to just wait!
Crowdfund your music career! Use Kickstarter, Patreon, Indiegogo, and other crowdfunding tools to connect to your fan base and run a successful fundraising campaign. Mobilize your fans to support your next album, tour, video, or other music project, or to create a steady fan-sourced income stream to support your career as a musician. Develop effective strategies for successful campaigns, including timing, networking, press relations, reward levels, and more. You will learn not only how to increase your income, but generally to optimize your career and art while connecting with your fanbase. Interviews with artists and industry insiders offer real-world stories and practical advice. Whether you have a label, manager and large fanbase, or just want to record your very first music, this book will help you achieve success as an independent artist.
In addition to the book, I'm creating some companion worksheets that can help you translate the lessons from the book into a plan for your band.
- Worksheet 1: Developing your online project —What makes your musical act unique, and how do you use that to make a low-cost, easy, but frequently updated online project that can build your online audience and engage your existing fans?
- Worksheet 2: What project can you fund? — What is the size of your online audience, how do you communicate with them, and what does that mean for how much money you can raise online? This worksheet helps you develop a realistic idea of how much money your band can make, and will also provide suggestions on creating a realistic first project.
- Worksheet 3: Interesting Updates — During a crowdfunding project, it is vital to stay in contact with your fans. However, this can be boring for you, and your audience, if you're just saying "GIVE ME MONEY!" over and over again. This worksheet will help you build a month of content that is more interesting, and even fun!
I am so very very excited to be recording my one-hour seminar "Crowdfunding for Musicians: Building an Online Audience!" This seminar has gone over great when I have presented it places including Berklee College of Music and Emerson College. It includes examples from my band and my clients as well as actionable steps.
After the seminar, there will also be a live Q&A with certain backers where I can answer questions about your project!
I'm offering a small number of coaching slots through this Kickstarter! Before the call, I'll ask you to fill out a survey, and then during the call we can talk about your goals and set a plan for your next steps!
Ok so this is a silly idea— Ghoul Squad is a fake band I made up as an example in the book. It's a trio of friends, and one of them is dead, and they play punk music. I designed this shirt for their fake kickstarter and I want one, so you can get one too! This is an exclusive product only available through this Kickstarter.
I've also written a Ghoul Squad song, and that will be recorded and released to all backers of this project if we reach $5,000!
Note: If you're backing at a level that doesn't have a shirt and you want one, add $30 to your pledge and I will talk to you after the project and make this happen for you.
I have some people to thank: Stephen Webber, who encouraged me to write a book, my editor Jonathan Feist for making it happen, Aubrey Turner for encouraging me, Suzy Webber for always being the right amount of there when I needed it, Richard Malena-Webber for eternal positivity and Marzipan the cat for everything.
Thank you also to my incredible clients, who are boldly inspirational in their creation of art and connection with their audiences. I have the coolest job.
And thank YOU for checking out this page!
Risks and challenges
The book is written and edited, but we are still in the process of creating the final print of the book. Unfortunately, just because of the publishing/printing process, it's hard for me to know right now 100% when the book will be released and when my copies will be sent to me (and then to you!)—I just have a window of a few months.
Fortunately, I've planned for that unknown and left in a comfortable cushion of time. I have funded and fulfilled many Kickstarters before. I will be sending books from my home, so I don't expect delays in shipping.
