About

Welcome to my kickstarter! The Guac-e Talk-e Walkie-Talkie is a hand-molded avocado radio made in Guatemala City. This campaign serves to fund both product and production development.

-------Products------

The guac-e talk-e is made in two parts. All devices will be worked in Guatemala city. We'll have the radios sourced, probably from Shenzhen, to our workshop. Reduced to the essentials (circuitboard, antenna, buttons, the mount...) we will give the radios their avocado shell. The guac-e’s in the photos serve as proof of concept - what’s clumsy and rustic-looking now needs some hard work and what comes out is an elegant walkie-talkie.

Color-Mix

We'll make a catalog for all the different colors (think of a 48 box of crayons), with photos of different combinations to give you a crisper idea of how different schemes look. In the survey you'll be able to choose what colors, either solid colors or a combination, you'd like for each pit, meat and skin.

Red pit, blue meat and the skin a mix of blue and red so it came out purple /// perfectly illustrating the color-mix the shell on the right was made using only blue and yellow - you can see the individual flecks - and the composite comes out green!

Photo and Color-Mix

The canvas per se is the entirety of the guac shell; the photo can be as large or as small as you want but I would recommend using a passport sized photo. We can also use the plotter to trim an image, use only the part that you’d like. You can use different image & color-mix schemes for each walkie-talkie. Compared to the other products, for these we’ll need quite a bit more input from you - we will be in touch. The photos below show how the guac shells turn out.

-------Prices-------

There are two major startup costs that drive the price points you see: fume hoods as work spaces and the injection molding die for the circuit board mount. Their total cost is around $10k. I will explain why both are necessary. The resin catalyst, when inhaled, is toxic to your lungs’ mucous membrane. Note that once the reaction is complete the plastic is safe to use. Though the Safety Data Sheet for the catalyst is in spanish, the link is goo.gl/K5yz92 for the curious, cf. § 5. A mixture of ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (SDS - goo.gl/yJm9hv),  methyl methatcrylate (SDS - goo.gl/SCTBFI) and an amine initiator (trade secret), it has a comparatively low vapor pressure (only a little higher than water) where, technically, respirators would be fine BUT fume hoods protect everyone, respirators only protect the user. Art and chemistry :) Related are other safety measures that are, by comparison, inexpensive e.g. material disposal, emergency/first aid equipment, PE gloves… The other major expense is the circuit board mount. The mount serves as the interface between the radio itself and the guac shell. A huge benefit of device construction is its modular assembly: avocado pit & meat, circuit board mount/electronics/buttons, avocado shell. The back and front parts of the radio shell will separate on the plane of the circuit board. This way is best in other devices, there’s no need to reinvent the wheel. Prototyping the mount will be inexpensive and we will use a common mount for all the guac styles. Upon reaching the final design we’ll cast the die. Among other fixed costs these two tools define the minimum to get production started.

-------Product Development-------

The mold/resin system was chosen thoughtfully. The molds give excellent reproduction of surface details - perfect avocado texture. Made individually, you make the color mix and then shape the plastic when it's curing. The process is scalable, polymerizes quickly at room temperature and gives a plastic that's very resilient. Without a doubt there are countless dimensions involved with launching a startup. Accelerator programs help startups go from idea to marketplace, providing both knowledge and tools to create a successful business around a product. Getting help from people who foster nascent products would be a huge boon to the guac-e. Right now I am looking for the best fit for the guac-e talk-e. Solving the technical details for the molding/manufacture of the device will be an iterative process, each step informing the next, until we have the final, polished product. We’re creating a circuit board mount adapted to a guac mold, not really in the same league as making rocket ships to send live people to mars, but it’s pretty close. Creating a consumer ready device and a working supply/production/delivery line is the ultimate goal of this campaign. While keeping time to market down is important, getting everything set-up right is mission critical.

-------Radio Specs-------

We will be using FRS, Family Radio Service, licence free walkie-talkies. We will not make the radios - only give the devices their guac shell. FRS is a recreational - limits on transmitting power other good stuff Each country allocates a specific part of the radio spectrum for public use. The United States and Canada share rules for this radio system; however, you cannot use these radios where the FRS system is not in use - we will not be sending radios to countries outside the FRS. We will be the client in a producer-client relationship with the radiomakers. I am shopping around for the best device/supplier. Concerning signal range, Effective Radiated Power for all FRS radios is capped at 500 milliwatts. Signal range is a function of ERP and the line of sight between both stations. Under ideal conditions, e.g. mountaintop to valley or open water, the radios do have an incredible range. However, depending on your terrain (line of sight blocked by buildings/trees), anywhere from half a mile to two miles is your real working range. Simply, it's impossible to give specifics for most dimensions about the device itself, e.g. rechargeable vs. disposable batteries, carrier/tone-coded/digital squelch and importantly, compatibility with other radios. The relative success of the campaign gives more room to maneuver. The electronics and communications industry makes incredible products that have become indispensable. Expect a good device you can rely on.

Risks and challenges

To reach success many disparate needs must be fulfilled. The human capacity is boundless, a group working in concert to meet those needs is made up of individuals each doing their part to achieve that common goal. Building the guac team is going to be the most challenging part of this project.
