Finally finished my IR-Blue. Nice! I definitely need some more insulation on my sunroom.

David, could you try the 0.89 beta version on Github?
      https://github.com/RHWorkshop/IR-Blue-Android
This version handles the BT differently. This is a beta so there could be some other issues.
But BT should be much better.

    3. Firsensor_function.small

      Creator Mardaso on November 15

Your right it shouldn't crash your phone. I'm working on a more robust BT version. But this will take some time. One thing you could try: disable save(GPS) location in the camera app.

    4. Missing_small

Creator David Kerrawn on November 14

To be clear, I don't think it's a problem with the FIR sensor app. At the least the OS shouldn't crash but should return an error if stuff is wrong. I'm hoping KitKat might fix it.

    5. Missing_small

Creator David Kerrawn on November 14

BT Secure is ticked in FIR Sensor. No option that I could see under Bluetooth Settings.
I do often get several seconds to a minute before the phone crashes.
      After some testing:
BT on, BT Secure On, Wifi On: Reboots
BT on, BT Secure On, Wifi Off: Reboots
BT on, BT Secure Off, Wifi On: Reboots
BT on, BT Secure Off, Wifi Off: Reboots

    6. Firsensor_function.small

      Creator Mardaso on November 14

I know that the Nexus 4 has issues with Wifi and BT running at the same time.
Did you change the BT-secure setting in the Android App?

    7. Missing_small

Creator David Kerrawn on November 14

I have a Nexus 4 running 4.3 but something the IR-Blue/FIR Sensor is doing seems to be causing the phone to reboot. Clearly the phone shouldn't reboot from anything an app or bluetooth device is sending. Is anyone else seeing this problem?

Christopher, like some other open source projects we have an "open source" version of the Android software which is available on github. It is currently at version 0.60. We also have a "free as in beer" version which is available compiled and is currently at version 0.86. Marcel is also working on a paid version of the Android software with advanced features which will probably be at version 1.0 when it is released. All three versions are updated at different times and will have different version numbers. Sorry for the confusion.

    11. Missing_small

Creator Christopher Meier on August 20, 2013

Mardaso/Marcel, I scrolled down and found Andy stated this KS is open source, including "The software and firmware is open source and available at https://github.com/RHWorkshop/";. I was able to find V0.60 source files, but none newer. In particular I am looking for the source for V0.86 (current open source app). Is it on github, and I missed it? If not, could you please post it up?
      Thanks

    12. Firsensor_function.small

Creator Mardaso on August 16, 2013

Christopher, the sensor is factory calibrated, to have a more uniform picture I added the offset function. Besides that calibration can not easily be done at home you will need special equipment for that.

Profiles sounds good, but more for the pro version I'm working on. An emissivity table and setting is already in the Android App. Look in the settings menu first item. The offset is calculated with an emissivity of 1.

What phone you're using? On some Android phones it can happen that the BT connecting stays in a loop. Restarting the phone will solve it. It's on my to do list together with the save issue on some phones.

    13. Missing_small

Creator Christopher Meier on August 13, 2013

      http://www.thermoworks.com/emissivity_table.html

I think this could use two or more calibration points; hopefully just 1 for 'flattening' the display via an offset table, but then point at two known temp point surfaces to get a 'hot' and 'cold' reading. If it proves necessary, combine with the next profile feature, so one can have a higher accuracy readout for a particular application.

I'd also like to have 'profiles', so I can set up a range and color palette, such as "forehead" to measure a child's temperature quickly. Or AC to measure air handler/duct/etc temperatures. Add in the hot/cold calibration points if a single global set isn't accurate enough in all cases.

Creator Andy Rawson on August 13, 2013

Christopher, if you have an Android App problem you would like to report you can open a new issue on GitHub at https://github.com/RHWorkshop/IR-Blue-Android/issues Please include your phone model and OS version since there is such a wide variety of Android devices/OS versions to support.

    15. Missing_small

Creator Christopher Meier on August 13, 2013

um. I scrolled down and found the manual link. Sorry for not looking first. Wife was in the hospital twice in the last month, been busy, just getting to dig into using this beyond trying a point and shoot.

      Running 0.86.

I calibrated on a flat surface, and it read +-1 degree, so far so good.

I tried changing the save folder to camera dcim folder, and now the alpha reads 0.0. Slider seems to have no effect. Pixels are all black. exited, restarted. no dice. I changed folder back, no dice. exited, restarted, no dice. I unset calibration. no dice. tried changing alpha, no dice. exited, restarted. Alpha is now 1.0, even if slider is moved. slider does impact alpha, but the display still reads 1.0.

So the software is a big buggy. Any chance you'd open-source it, or accept a limited number of contributing developers?

    16. Missing_small

Creator Christopher Meier on August 13, 2013

Andy, I pointed mine at various thermally 'flat' surfaces, yet the display is showing variation ~10 degrees. Is there a way to calibrate the sensor to read uniformly on a constant surface?

Finally (vacation delay in customs) got my assembled IR-Blue in Germany. It did work right away with a Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Tab (P7500) after disabling secure BT communication. From all Kickstarter Projects I've backed, this one stands out: no overpromises, stuck to schedule, good value, adequate communication, no unpleasant surprises. Hardware and App work as promised. Will back again!

    24. Missing_small

Creator sgllama on August 1, 2013

      @Mardaso
Thanks for making that version - unfortunately it too stops :-(
The main screen opens and I can press controls (not a lot happens at that point). If I access the menu and select "BT Connect" it lists the IR-Blue but selecting it will cause the app to stop every time. Actually, not selecting a BT device also causes it to stop!

Creator Andy Rawson on July 30, 2013

Dragonbait, every assembled unit was tested at the factory but it could certainly have a problem. On iPhone, when you start the app then turn on the IR-Blue you should see the Bluetooth icon in the top right corner flash then turn white. If it does but the image overlay doesn't show up then there may be something wrong with the sensor. You can also install the nBlueTerm app, turn on the IR-Blue then scan and connect to it. In the input box type R001 and press return. It should give a stream of the raw sensor data. If there is a problem with the unit it will be replaced, just email support@rhworkshop.com
Alasdair, I agree an led should have been in it. Unfortunately with the time demands of a Kickstarter, meeting stretch goal redesigns and fitting those into manufacturing timelines, not every feature I wanted to include actually made it in.

    27. Simpsons_john.small

Creator Dragonbait on July 30, 2013

I have the exact same problem.
New batteries, tried it on 2 different iPhones, but never gets past 'Connecting'
      Faulty units?
      Any Thoughts Andy?

Creator Alasdair Allan on July 30, 2013

Received mine this morning (fully assembled). Installed the app on my iPhone 5. Doesn't seem to do anything. Just sits on "Connecting". It'd help if there were some indictor LEDs on the IR Blue itself. A black box with an on/off switch isn't amazingly helpful when it comes to debugging.

True, the G9 only has a front camera, but just for a laugh I installed the APK anyway - you never know your luck. I can get into the initial screen but before anything interesting happens a message pops up to say that the app has stopped :-(
As I'm really interested in Bluetooth 4 BLE support I'm waiting to see who does what, now Andoird 4.3 has finally appeared, before getting a new device - and the IR Blue is waiting patiently...

Andy, I thought so and told the customs. They were of other opinion or simply didn't know. BUT I find a certain sadism in customs treatment in general as they demonstrate their power ;-) Thanks again, I will head to assembly now!

    40. Rh_workshop_logo_square_white_background.small

Creator Andy Rawson on July 19, 2013

Jörg, there is no declaration of conformity for the kit since you are the manufacturer. :-) It is a collection of components.

      Components:
The regulations apply to electrical equipment. In general, components are not covered by the regulations. Only components which are in themselves electrical equipment need to satisfy the requirements of the regulations and, in particular, bear European Conformity (CE) marking.

As far as I know most if not all of the other kits sent to Germany had no customs problems. The Assembled units have a declaration in the manual and a link to the full CE test report.

    41. Firsensor_function.small

Creator Mardaso on July 19, 2013

Jörg: I don't know if it's necessary to do so for DIY kits. Maybe Andy can help out on that.

Got my IR-Blue from German customs today. Unfortunately the CE documents and letter of confirmity were missing and it took me some time to convince customs to hand out the package. It's quite risky to send goods without proper papers to Germany. Could be that some German backers won't get the IR-Blue at all, because it's being destroyed by customs or returned to sender. Anyways: I'm looking forward to putting the IR-Blue together this evening :)
