About this project

I have been on a search for almost five years for the perfect bag. Six months ago I gave up and decided to make it myself.

I began by using my mother's sewing machine, leather from old thrift store jackets, and fabric from a craft store to make a few rough prototypes. I refined and simplified the design, scoured Baltimore for interesting sources for materials, called hundreds of people on the telephone, and eventually figured out how to have his bag made locally.

The bag is made from canvas that has been salvaged from the Globe Poster Printing Company, a huge part of not just Baltimore's history, but the history of music in America. Unfortunately, Globe is on its way out, and amongst the industrial presses that are being sold for scrap and the massive wood type collection that is being acquired by the Maryland Institute College of Art, sits two pallets of natural canvas, vestiges of a printing job that fell through many years ago. I spoke with Bob Cicero, one of the owners of Globe, and purchased as much of this canvas as I could afford from him.

It is important to me to keep this project as local as possible, and after asking all over town, I was able to find a manufacturer in the city that can sew the bags. Though Fashions Unlimited usually makes garments, they did a wonderful job sewing the bag and have been a pleasure to work with.

Leatherwork is outside of the manufacturers wheelhouse, so I talked to some local shop owners and found a leather worker in the city that is able to produce the straps and other leather bits. He is an offset printer by day and passionate leatherworker by night, and another Baltimore native.

It is important to me to tell the story behind the design, manufacture, and production of this bag. I have taken over 1000 photographs of the process up to this point and I will continue to document the growth of this project into the future. I will be making a small printed piece, perhaps a little booklet, zine, or foldout pamphlet that will tell the story of the bag and everyone that has had a part in bringing it to life. I also hope to stay in touch with everyone who purchases a bag to find out what they're being used for and document the natural materials as they wear in.

Bag Specifications

  • Height: 11.5"
  • Width: 15.5"
  • Depth: 2-4"

  • Vegetable Tanned Leather Base and Straps (pair)
  • Solid Brass Hardware
  • Padded Laptop/Notebook Pocket
  • Cotton Twill Lining
  • Loop & Strap Closure (Simple and Durable)

Some of these details might change on the full production run, but this at least gives you a sense for my taste: natural, high quality, and simple.

What the Money Will Go Towards

The money will go entirely towards production of the bags and accompanying printed materials. There are a lot of up front costs that I'll need to cover: dies for punching the leather, presses for mounting the grommets and rivets, etc. If I get enough support for this project, I hope to buy the rest of the canvas from Globe, which would help them out financially and allow me to make more products with the recycled material.
