NecronomiCards is a fast-paced horror-themed card game for necromancers-in-training whose idea of a good time is to match together magic symbols to Summon horrific monsters and ancient Lovecraftian deities that you then use to backstab and attack your opponents in infuriating, dastardly ways.
NecronomiCards Vol 2 adds new Summon cards, a whole new set of strategic defensive abilities, and other additions and adjustments to make games more fast-paced and fun. It can be played either as an expansion to the original game that allows for up to 8 player games or as a 2-3 player stand alone game.
Before we get into what's brand new in Vol 2, let me catch you up on the basics:
Spell cards depict a variety of magic symbols that you must combine together into matching sets in order to draw Summon cards. Every turn you draw a Spell card and compare its symbols to the others in your hand. Once you've matched up 3 pairs of matching symbols, two triplets, or six of a kind you get to draw...
Summon cards show foul monsters, mythical creatures, elder gods, and biblical demons, as well as an action that either helps you or hurts another player. Each time you play a Summon card you earn a point. The first player to seven points wins. Sounds crazy simple, right? That's because I haven't mentioned...
Curse cards are also shuffled into the Spell deck, and randomly cause you to lose turns, discard or hand over Spell cards, and other soul-crushing setbacks. You never know when your perfect streak will come crashing down to an end.
NecronomiCards Vol 1 was successfully funded on Kickstarter in April 2016 and started shipping out at the beginning of the following September. I've had the pleasure of demoing it at PAX West among many other places, and I've gathered a ton of insight into what could make it an even better game. That's why I want to make Vol 2. I'm extremely excited to have this opportunity to evolve NecronomiCards into an even bigger and better experience and I hope you're excited too.
Visual learner? I've made a few brief video tutorials of NecronomiCards Vol 1.
NecronomiCards Vol 2 can be played as a stand-alone 2 or 3-player game, but its primary purpose is to be played as an expansion in combination with NecronomiCards Vol 1 that allows for up to 8 player games and some new awesome opportunities for strategic gameplay.
NecronomiCards Vol 2 introduces new levels of gameplay complexity through fun new Summon and Curse card actions, as well as a few new twists to the Spell cards themselves. In total Vol 2 includes:
New & clarified rules for more fast-paced games
– including an optional limit on the number of consecutive turns a player can miss
- 7 Curse cards
20 new Summon cards
– featuring awesome new creatures from an increasingly wide range of sources
50 new Spell cards
– including, as MANY of you have requested, several Spell cards that contain matching pairs and/or triplets to help games move along at an even faster pace. That means one single Spell card can instantly put you most of the way towards drawing 1, 2, or 3 Summon cards.
- AND A BRAND NEW STRATEGIC CARD TYPE:
NecronomiCards Vol 2 will come with a deck of 16 Relic cards to draw from. Each player starts the game with two Relics, one-time use cards that are kept secret and may be played at any time. Actions performed by Relics include canceling out the point from another player's Summon for 3 turns to buy you some time, reflecting the effects of a Summon back on an opponent, or letting you draw a completely new hand of Spell cards.
Relic cards introduce a new level of strategic thinking to the game, because you never know what players will have what secret abilities.
Additional copies of NecronomiCards Vol 1 & 2 can easily be added to any reward tier, as well as NecronomiCards posters and t-shirts:
1) Press the "Manage your pledge" button at the top of the page. If you have not yet pledged, it will say "Back this project".
2) Increase your pledge amount by the amount necessary for the add-on you wish to receive.

Optional Add-On 5: Felt Storage Bag
These super-soft and durable drawstring bags were a stretch-goal in the previous Kickstarter. I'm adding them here as an Add-On for those who missed them last time or want extras. They're beautifully hand screen-printed by a local studio, and the perfect size to store all of your NecronomiCards in one place.
Hand-Made 3D Summon Card Art
My good friend and local artist Leeron Rozenkranz meticulously hand-cut and layered 5"x7" prints of the art from NecronomiCards Summons into these beautiful of one-of-a-kind custom art. They can be yours for $30 each. There will only be 60 of them total (one of each Summon card), and when they're gone they're gone.
Digital Rewards - All tiers
Digital rewards will include desktop wallpapers of art from the game, sized to fit all standard devices (phones, tablets, and computers). I will also put together a pdf ebook of art from the game as well as early monster designs and sketches to show a peek inside the process.
I will also create a PDF art book including a selection of sketches and in-progress art from NecronomiCards Vol 2.
B&W Print & Play Edition - $10+ tiers
Once the game's print files are finalized, I will create a grayscale PDF version so that you can get a feel for all of the new features before Vol 2 is shipped. The PDF will also include the original game.
Become a Summon Card - $500+ tiers
That's right! I will illustrate you, a loved-one, or a business mascot (whoever you provide me a photo of) as some sort of demon or monster. Next I'll turn that art into an actual playable Summon card that will be included as a bonus with every copy of NecronomiCards Vol 2 sold on Kickstarter. AND, on top of that, I'll provide you with a large poster-print of that art for you to frame and creep out your family with forever.
A Handmade Necronomicon - $1,000 tier
The ultimate way to protect your NecronomiCards: I will personally handcraft you a full-sized Necronomicon replica to store your cards inside! Hollowed out with enough room for Vol 1, Vol 2, bonus cards, and more, this book will be made to look like the Necronomicon card from NecronomiCards Vol 1 come to life. This tier is limited to 3 backers.
This tier ALSO includes all of the rewards that come with the previous tier, including a custom illustrated bonus card of you or a loved one, the t-shirt, prints, etc, etc, etc.
As many of you have requested in comments and PMs, the first stretch goal will be a reprinting of the 10 pop-culture inspired bonus cards from the NecronomiCards Vol 1 Kickstarter! That means I'll be including ten extra Summon cards with every Kickstarter backer's shipment that draw inspiration from some of your favorite characters. These will only be available if you pledge at the $20 tier or higher. Digital copies will not be available.
I will ALSO include 5 new, never before seen bonus Summon cards based on some of my favorite horror movies from the 80s and 90s.
Thats 15 Kickstarter-exclusive Summon cards in total!
Since we hit the $25,000 mark, every Backer who pledges at the $20 tier or higher will get 2 4"x6" prints of the Yaoguai and Erlking art from NecronomiCards Vol 2, perfect for framing and hanging in your home to scare away your family and friends.
Every Backer who pledges at the $20 tier or higher will get 2 4"x6" prints of the Shub-Niggurath and Sojobo art from NecronomiCards Vol 2, perfect for framing and hanging in your home to scare away your family and friends.
You'll get 10 more Kickstarter Exclusive Bonus Cards, including the most devastating of all possible Summons...
I thought it would be fun to get a little tongue-in-cheek about the current state of US politics. I know there's a chance that some of you might be Trump supporters, but good news! You can just leave the card out. Easy as that. There will be 9 more bonus Summon or Relic cards included with this one from a variety of references.
New and better stretch goals will be revealed as the funding increases! Possible future stretch goals may include:
- Expanding the number of Summon cards included with all copies of NecronomiCards Vol 2
- New Kickstarter exclusive Summon or Relic cards.
- Summon cards designed and illustrated by special guest artists (I have a LOT of crazy-talented friends).
- Felt drawstring storage bags with screen-printed NecronomiCards art, or other similar accessories along those lines.
I've got lots of other really cool ideas, but I don't want to jinx myself and go too deep into that just yet.
NecronomiCards is the creative baby of designer & illustrator Andy Hunt. I've been hired to do art for people like Adult Swim, Marvel Comics, ABC, Hasbro, and Cracked.com, and I've designed shirts sold at just about every cool place you can buy a shirt. I hand illustrated each NecronomiCard based on some of my favorite characters and creatures from mythology, horror, and world religion. I've put a massive massive amount of time, research, and testing into designing this game. It's truly a labor of love, and I'm really excited to finally unleash it upon the world!
NecronomiCards Volume 1 has been a much bigger success than I could have possibly imagined. I had the extreme pleasure of demoing it alongside some other amazing indie games in the Cards Against Humanity room at PAX West 2016, and it's available online and in small independant stores across the US.
Risks and challenges
I can happily say that risks to backing this Kickstarter are minimal. I have already completed the bulk of the art and design for the game and I'm currently play-testing and tweaking the new gameplay features and rules. I have a manufacturer that I know I can trust and have used in the past, that is owned and operated right here in the USA. My fulfillment partner is BlackBox, a division of Cards Against Humanity. Admittedly, we experienced some small hiccups with a small percentage of the shipments the last go round, but it will have been a year from that Kickstarter's fulfillment to when this one ships and their system has been greatly streamlined since then. I have also worked with them to ship some packages from the UK and Canada, greatly improving international shipping costs from last time. There is always a possibility that manufacturing or fulfillment processes can slow things down a bit at times, so we must always be prepared for that possibility. At worst that means a chance of slight delays, nothing to be too concerned about.
Please keep in mind that the bulk of the Kickstarter rewards for NecronomiCards Vol 1 shipped over a month ahead of schedule, so I'm very confident that this Kickstarter will also ship on a very reasonable schedule.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
