December Update: Manufacturing On Track, Happy Holidays!

Posted by Andromium Inc. (Creator)

Hi Superbook backers and supporters,

Merry Christmas and happy holidays to everyone! Pretty much all good news this time. Will keep this update short, but filled with information.

First, our first shipment of 5k USB hubs have arrived. The remainder are expected to arrive on January 20th. A few of you asked about videos of what the USB hub bug looked like - here's a video of a Superbook with a faulty hub:

As you can see, the Superbook’s screen turns off due to the data leak, fairly quickly into the video. Here is a video of the Superbook with the updated working USB hub:

Ah. Much better.

A few of you have asked in the last update and over Slack / email why we couldn’t just send out units to backers who don’t plan on playing video games or use Samsung devices. The reason is because the underlying issue is a data leak problem, which has the potential to manifest in other ways on other devices - it only immediately occurs as an issue on the Samsung devices that we’ve tested. It’s kinda like having internal bleeding, but only feeling pain when you do yoga. You could “solve it” by never doing yoga again, but the better idea is to go see the doctor to fix the internal bleeding — or face dire consequences down the road.

In any case, thank you to everyone for being patient and continue to support us as we resolve the hub issue.

Second, we have resolved all of our major remaining manufacturing obstacles. Aside from waiting for the 2nd shipment of USB hubs, we should be set to move forward to production.

Here’s the timeline:

  • Mid-January - Mass production begins with first batch of hubs, continuing on when the 2nd shipment of USB hubs arrive. First major batches will go to the warehouse in Hong Kong.
  • Early February - Our manufacturers come back from Chinese New Year, finishing up any packing / additional assembly necessary.
  • Mid February - Superbooks start their ocean freight journey. Backers in Asia will start receiving their Superbooks.
  • Mid March - Superbooks arrive in North America and Europe warehouses, start getting sorted and shipped via Ground Shipping.
  • April - Depending on the speed of Ground Shipping, backers in North America and Europe will receive their Superbooks.

We’ve selected our awesome backers to receive the first 10 Superbooks. Those will be shipping out the first week of January, and we hope to get some detailed reviews from them for the next update. In addition, we’ll be sending out a couple devices for early reviews with major tech publications. Expect those around the same time as our next update! (Keep your fingers crossed)

Ok, that’s it for us this month. Have a great new year everyone, and I’ll look forward to giving you an update in January with production progress and reviews!

Cheers, Team Sentio

Yeah I'm definitely gonna try and get a refund. This has been an absolutely absurd number of delays and I can't even tell what progress has been made. Every "update" looks the same.

you can keep my money. along with my undying disappointment.

I'm not happy with te delay, but, I'll be very happy with the superbook.

I already taste the dexk of Samsung and this is 100 time better.

So, please, send it as soon as possible.

Given the long delay..and the sudden shift in technology from 2 years ago. Am wondering if your product is still relevant or was there a consideration in future proofing it. Is a refund still an option? the way it's going ..i would consider it rather than wait for your product to come out.

March now?!?! Lmao gtfo. So glad I got a refund.

    7. Raul Mendoza on

Please provide me with the correct contact information for the department that handles a full refund. This product has repeatedly broken the agreement terms of promised HUGE amounts of delay times. I will not accept that a full refund is not available. I will be reporting to the attorney general and BBB if a full refund is not immediately provided. Thank you for your prompt attention.

This wait is to long. I'm done. I no longer give a damn about this piece of tech and just want my money back. The deadline was not met, the second deadline was not met, the promises made by this company WERE NOT MET. Refund those who want it. Today starts my blogging and social media campaign about this very issue. As a blogger with 32K subscribers and as a officer in a 401c3 I reach quite a few people. This will make a great series of articles in which to write about. Failed promises, broken expectations, and how not to deal with your backers.

@Mark, and everyone else saying "It's not that bad!" ...
Yes, yes it is that bad. But what's really bad is the alienation of the thus-far-patient backing community. This hodge-podge group of tech-rednecks has abused the very group that risked cold, hard, cash with a promise from the creators that has gone literally unfilled. And sure - that's the nature of Kickstarter; take a risk, desire reward. The huge issue I've seen is their insincere "apologies" and the cavalier "everything is GREAT" attitude consistently shown in these updates. There is no "We messed up, I'm sorry, there's no way but to apologize", never a "Well, this was our fault, so here's how we're making it up to you, our loyal fanbase." Instead they just brush it off as "no big deal". It is a big deal. And their ignorance, or willful abuse, of those who have trusted them, makes it worse.

With experience in the software, hardware, project management, and production worlds, I absolutely understand errors. I understand delays. I understand mistakes, miscommunication, missed deadlines and mishaps. But I also know a problem when I see one - *that* is a mark of a mature engineer - and this is a problem. Andromium, Sentio, whoever they choose to call themselves - they are not treating their backers with respect, and not taking care of those who were indeed willing to remain loyal through the long haul. People will be loyal to a community or even a company who treats its members/customers right. This group has blown it ... and these once loyal, friendly, excited backers have turned into an angry mob, jaded and hurt. These creators will get what's coming to them, and much of the ire presented in these comments is completely warranted.

To be absolutely clear: I am in no way advocating threats or anything inappropriate like that against the founder of this project. Rather, I'm saying that anyone who thinks they need to jump in and shield or save the founders from the (rightfully) angry supporters who backed the project: put your efforts into more productive things - if you really want to help the founders, don't shield them from normal consequences, help them deliver on their failed promises.

Just a last comment. I have backed a lot of Kickstarters (I need to cut back) and I did not want to imply I am disappointed in this project or the creator. Actually, they are doing a better than average job throughout the project, and history has shown if they deliver a product that doesn't break in a few months and can do 90% of what is promised, it will be viewed largely as a win. What I fault the creator with (and 99% of all creators on Kickstarter) is tossing out completely unrealistic deadlines initially. Defenders here claim there are too many variables to accurately predict a project of this complexity. I actually completely agree, but you can't on one hand say "we all know there are unknowns that will affect delivery" and on the other hand provide unicorn and rainbow time estimates during funding. One other thought I will toss out. The creators generally have one or maybe in some cases a few projects under their belts. In this case the creators are I am sure working hard and want to succeed. On the other side of the table are hundreds or thousands of "backers" who have dozens or more project under their belts, many with very long delays and some complete frauds. So it is probably only human for frustrations and anger from a long track record of frustrating Kickstarter involvements by the one group to spill out onto the creator of a single project like this one. Obviously it is not completely fair, but it is also probably not completely avoidable. I am still looking forward to this project delivery, a few more months after all this time won't change that much, but at this point I fully expect it to work very very well and if it does I will talk it up to all my friends and the extra wait will quickly be (mostly) forgotten.

    17. Rickie Dallas on

Sure hope Australia counts as Asia like it so often does. The wait for this is killing me! :p

Cut your losses an by a real laptop. This Sam has gone on way to long. Andrew must have gone to the school of Leaurent ..of Omate fame for internet fraud. Omate sent out unfinished barely working smart watches under the guise of a developer edition...not working from day one. If you like the Superbook try the NextDock. It has everything the Superbook has and you don't need their software. Just plug in your phone, compute stick etc and you're good to go. OH Wait I bought that and it can barely turn on but when it does it works That too was 18 months late. Don't you just love how beautiful their update look and feel? They should for the over 2 million they raised.also try looking up what data bleed hub? I don't think so.

    20. James Iovino on

Its a joke, I got in on this the day it came out.
This video doesn't actually show us any functionality of the superbook working other than them playing a video which is simply HDMI passthrough.
Considering the chinese newyear dates this year.... they will get back early March and the product is unlikely to leave china before April. Meaning we are looking at May/June for the Superbooks to reach the USA (because of ocean freight shipping time).

I'm a mechanical engineer who has project management experience.

For whatever my opinion is worth here - I think this group is doing a great job. Yes they are amateurs developing a product which hasn't really been developed THUS it is experiencing delays. They have won several awards and developed quiet a presence within the industry and I assure you once they are regarded highly in their field. They also don't have the kind of funding and team which allows for smoother "drawing board to final product". These ups and down are part of any and EVERY project any company goes through. Now you can get a crappy product quickly or a good product with a certain delay. I ASSURE you everyone here prefers a good product with a certain delay.

I also agree with mjcarson that they can offer something as a token of their appreciation, however, I feel it will be difficult seeing the limited resources.

    22. Missing avatar

      Mark Sheats on

Yeah, I'm ccol with something like that, but of course that would be up to people running the company to figure out. They have to figure out how to stretch their dollars and move strategically.

Personal life is not easy... how many of us meet our goals and get everything done we want to get done? How many of us stay on schedule in our personal lives? And companies are made up of people like us, but hopefully this company has people more organized than us.

Having been involved in a few projects I can say that it is very, very, very hard (in fact, impossible) to imagine and plan for all the things that will happen the first time you do something like this. You can do better the second time around, and the third, and so on.

Jerrold said, "I get the feeling that you are a bunch of amateurs playing against the big boys." Well, it's a brand new company creating a product not created before, so in one sense you could call them amateurs--this is their first time doing it. And the "big boys" are the companies that already went through their learning curves, and for the most part are just making changes to products already created.

    23. Missing avatar

I get Kickstarter is not a store and tech projects are ALWAYS behind schedule and the creators have done a pretty good job keeping us in the loops, however a year + late is a year+ late, no way to sugar coat that. Backers have been (for the most part) patient. I would suggest the creators offer some sort of "token" sign of appreciation for that patience. Maybe a free phone holder or a few free extra cables. Just something to show they understand their level of responsibility in the delays. Words are great but actions do speak loader than words at times like this.

    24. Missing avatar

      Mark Sheats on

Hold on, people... I've been waiting a long time for my Superbook, too, and I've been disappointed by all the delays, but I want it to be right when it arrives. The fewer problems, the better. I think they have done a very good job of being honest and communicating with us, telling us the reality as they see it now, rather than telling us overly optimistic things. I'm very impressed with what I have seen from this team that just came together and started this company.

I am an electrical engineer, and I have worked in software development after graduation. Things just about ALWAYS take longer than you expect. It took me 3 years to do the firmware for the instrument I worked on. Management was not happy about the time it took (I was doing other things also), but in the end it worked. Other people work faster, but the ones that work faster often have more bugs, and bugs can be disastrous, leading to recalls and expensive warranty work.

Do you think they are intentionally delaying the product and trying to make us mad? I don't think so... I think they are doing their very best, working long hours, and trying very hard to launch this brand new company in a stellar fashion. If it bothers you greatly to wait, then I suggest you only purchase products that are already completed. Think about it... you and I have been part of allowing a great, brand new company to launch. That's not an easy task, and most new companies don't make it, from what I've heard.

So please don't be so hard on them... please assume they are doing the best they can... I am sure they are! But they are human, and they have to sleep. And it's not easy laying out and debugging new circuit boards, and also testing and making their product compatible with so many phones! I think they need encouragement and thanks, not chastisement.

Yes, I'm anxious to receive mine and I hope it will come soon. I hope they will do all they reasonably can to beat their proposed schedule (I think they will), but we've waited this long... we can wait a little longer.

I did a little checking on Chinese New Year, and I found the info below. Chinese New Year is a much bigger event than our Christmas.

      February 16, 2018
The Chinese New Year of 2018 falls on February 16th (Friday), and the festival will last to March 2nd, about 15 days in total.

As an official public holiday, Chinese people can get seven days' absence from work, from February 15th to 21st.

Chinese New Year celebrations, also known as the Spring Festival, in China start on the 23rd day of the 12th lunar month of the Chinese calendar. The festival lasts for about 23 days, ending on the 15th day of the first lunar month in the following year in the Chinese calendar.

I found this note about companies affected in 2017:
Mass Production and Sample Development is Halted One to Two Weeks Before the Chinese New Years Eve. While the Chinese New Year Eve is set on January 28th, 2017, all suppliers start to wind down operations one to two weeks in advance. Jan 1, 2017

So let's hang on a little longer and be proud of ourselves for helping them get this company going, and proud of ourselves for enduring the wait patiently. Before they launched the idea, we had no such device to buy at all, right? The world did not have Superbooks before you and I helped them come into existence!!!!

By the time you have a salable product your market advantage will have disappeared. I get the feeling that you are a bunch of amateurs playing against the big boys. It is disappointing that your incompetence is costing your backers and investors.

My goodness, this will be the LAST time I ever back anything in Kickstarter. By the time we get these, if we get them, it will be a year and a half. You should have figured out all of these issues before you put in Kickstarter. This is an example of very bad business. I bet 90% of people would be for a refund rather than to continue waiting for this. And, if I ever do received my laptop and there is any kind of problem, be assured that I will tell everyone I know NEVER the so business with you or Kickstarter. Let's see how you like those kind of reviews.

Your ethics must be not-existent. It *might* happen that backers receive their selected items in two years (OVER A YEAR LATE!!!), but then again, probably not. Your updates seem to provide more marketing-speak than actual product for backers. Your support is a joke, and your responses to very legitimate suggestions has been poor at best.
IMHO, you deserve to be blacklisted and any future projects you run on Kickstarter should be meet with much scepticism. The dubiousness if so much information you've shared to this point has betrayed so much trust that all backers should be refunded a portion of their funds, AND expedited the product once it finally ships *at no additional cost*!

Shame on you. Shame shame shame - stop lying and deliver.

One question, according to this update, it seems the batch number that backers belong to is not the main priority for shipping. Does it mean backers from Asia , especially Hong Kong may the first batch who are able to receive the superbook? Only curious and wanna clarify. Or each production lots will break down to different region group according to the backers' batch number?
Thank you, hope the good news last till delivery. Good job anyway.
