1.5M - free sleeves for ALL! (& survey results, stretch goals, more Superbook Doubles)

Posted by Andromium Inc. (Creator)

Oh man, lots to reveal today! Read everything :)

1.5M stretch goal unlocked - free Superbook Sleeves!

First off, WOW. 1.5M backing for the Superbook? We're speechless, and have been working hard to figure out what we can do for our stretch goals (while simultaneously trying to source the ones we've promised).

Our 1.5M stretch goal is unlocked! For each Superbook, we're providing our backers with a free custom-branded sleeve.

See below for the first sleeve samples that came in yesterday!

NOTE: These are the first designs we've received. We're still in the process of finalizing the style and the design of the sleeves.

We are evaluating these versus other models, as well as finding ways to imprint better logo designs (there's a sample coming in with leather emboss, so stay tuned!).

Survey results and upcoming stretch goals

When we initially launched our 2M stretch goal, there were a number of you that expressed disappointment at the possibility of having to pay for both the backlit keys upgrade on top of the 1080p screen upgrade when you really only want the screen upgrade.

While we generally have to go by our own convictions, as well as  the realities of manufacturing, it made sense to involve our backers in this particular decision.

We implored our wonderful community to direct their thoughts and feedback to a survey!

Survey analysis

Over 3,000 of you responded, with 87% very likely to get the 1080p upgrade. Of respondents:

  • 36% were extremely likely to back an additional $25 for backlit keys
  • 20% were very likely
  • 18% were neutral or unsure
  • 13% were unlikely
  • 13% were very unlikely
As they say, the proof is in the pudding
As they say, the proof is in the pudding

TL;DR: Combined, 74% of you either like our initial decision to implement backlit keys as a stretch goal, or remain unaffected by it.

The final decision

Thus--after a lot of deliberation--we decided that the best thing we could do to satisfy as many people as possible would be to provide 3 levels of product: 1) Basic, 2) 1080p upgrade, and 3) 1080p+Backlit combo upgrade.

However, this comes with 1 catch - we can only provide the 3rd SKU with enough volume. (We know, there's always a catch!)

To accomodate for this new volume requirement we decided to move back the backlit keys upgrade as a stretch goal for when we reach $2.5M in funding.

What does this mean? Well, when we hit $2.5M, you'll have three options:

Given the data from the survey on backlit keys, we're going to stand by our decision. (Note that there is still no option to only upgrade for the backlit keys.)

We realize this may disappoint backers that were looking forward to backlit keys, but we promise that we're going to do all we can to get us to $2.5m. If we don't reach the stretch goal by the end of the campaign but we’re close enough and implementation is viable, we’ll still work on delivering them!

Again, we understand no matter what we do we’ll disappoint some of our backers with our stretch goals, but we need to make our decisions based on a combination of our product vision, feedback from the community, and manufacturing constraints.

Also, we can't just leave you guys with nothing at the 2M mark. So here are our updated stretch goals:

  • 150K: Major International Language Keyboard Decals FREE
  • 300K: Extra USB Port - Full Size Type A FREE
  • 500K: Bigger Battery - 8hr+ to 10hr+ FREE
  • 1M: 1080p Option ($30 added cost upgrade)
  • 1.5M: Customized Superbook Sleeves w/ Pockets for Smartphone FREE
  • 2M: Solid Color Skin for the Superbook FREE
  • 2.5M 1080p + Backlit Option ($25 added cost upgrade, on top of 1080p upgrade)

More info about the look/design of the skins and sleeves coming soon - as soon as we make our final decisions :)

Additional Superbook Doubles

It's been incredibly popular, so we're adding another 200 rewards of the limited Superbook Double tier. Get yours before they run out!

On questions...

We're off to China to make sure things are ready to go!

We'll be a little bit understaffed, so please be patient with us on comments and updates if we take a little longer.

Finally - a special shoutout to those who have been answering comments when we're not there - we're super grateful for the time & effort you've volunteered!! ❤️

However, we can't claim responsibility for any discrepancies between their answers and ours, so if you can't reach a reasonable conclusion to your question as a community, you can always double-check with us :)

Alright, now for our signing off note - we're getting to the point in this backer-creator relationship where we think you know this without us constantly having to tell you this, but we'll say it anyway: we love and appreciate you

There you go -- nothing fancy this time, just straight honesty (which, as we were taught in grade school, is the best policy). Thank you for your constant support, understanding, and willingness to stand by us as we make these difficult decisions!

With caffeine-induced gusto (and overflowing love and appreciation),

Let's keep in mind while this project moves along to keep materials as ethically and environmentally sustainable as possible. I think we can all agree that is a necessary area to be strict and dedicated - we need to show responsibility to those who build this project, and the environment from which we source materials, from start to finish. As an example, I would encourage looking into high-quality reusable/upcycled materials for any cover/case, rather than plastics/synthetics/leather. Did you know there is now an all-natural "leather" made from discarded pineapple skin/leaves? Or from mushrooms? For packaging the actually product (and shipping) please consider sourcing all paper products which are 100% FSC-certified. This is the global standard for environmentally-responsible paper products.

I hope we can show the same leadership in materials and packaging as we have shown for this innovative product, it will build business and respect from the community in the long-run. Thank you!

    5. NobleBrutus on

@Gretchen What you can do is pledge the extra money now, and if by the end of the campaign we have not hit 2.5M then lower your pledge by that amount.

I pledged for the double superbooks, then today I pledged for the 1080p upgrade. I definitely want both superbooks to have backlit keys. SO question: Do I pledge the extra $25 each NOW or wait? If I pledged the extra $50 now and it's NOT an option, will I be reimbursed or just not charged? Thanks so much!!! Very excited about this project!!!

    7. Phil Stocks

@matthias Completely agree about having a microSD port as an option - far more useful than backlit keys IMO. hardware/software-wise it shouldn't be too difficult - if they can add additional USB ports, and USB SD card adapters exist, it shouldn't be too hard to build something the system 'sees' as a USB port that you can fit an SD card into.

@Matthias Watermann I would much prefer if the creator did NOT make many changes to the product as stretch goals. I have backed a number of products on Kickstarter and a very common cause of delays and/or failure is getting too much money and stretch goals changing the scope of the project.

@Hartmut Geissbauer: You're right about the impact of hard- and software enhancements, just as it's true for the 1080-display or the backlit keyboards for which one has to pay extra. However, we're talking about possible improvements for future milestones (stretch goals). So why not instead of free gimmicks (like a cover/sleeve) add some actually useful functionality?
As far as a USB port is concerned, I never talked about that but suggested SSD or SDcard slots in the Superbook. And the app (Andromium) would need some functionality to actually use the Superbook's hardware (e.g. the SDcards therein) just like it uses the keyboard or display. My time of building devices are about 30 years past but I guess for another $10 one could add the suggested backup functionality.
Anyway, the price-tag for the Superbook is already in the range of decent smartphones and I think a docking-station should provide as much functionality as possible.

    13. Hartmut Geissbauer

      @Matthias Watermann
I totally agree with the comment of cmorgan in the the main comment section.
Briefly; the Superbook is as it is. Each hardware and software change has impact on costs and delivery dates.
IMHO not the app is responsible to detect devices on the USB-A port, but your phone.

    14. Missing avatar

      Matthias Watermann on

@Hartmut Geissbauer First, an external SDcard reader would be an additional device lying around, while I'd prefer one or two slots inside the Superbook (there should be room enough); second, the app would need to get enhanced to backup the phone's data to the book's card(s).

    15. Hartmut Geissbauer

Why not simply connecting your SDcard reader (writer) to the USB-A port?

    16. Missing avatar

      Matthias Watermann on

Personally I don't much care about backlit keys (which are just wasting precious power IMHO) or a sleeve/cover (after all I want to _use_ the station not hide it). What I'd really like would be enhanced _functionality_ like a backup option (by e.g. SSD or SDcard) for the phone's data. Any chance something like that might be considered?

    17. Alejandro Ortega on

@Eve Oh god it has began. The Vegans are here to complain about Animal Products.

Anyway, I would have preferred backlit keys as the 1.5m Stretch goal as that is more than 70 Percent of the people in favor or no opinion, which should give a favor towards the keys. Unless their was an issue with sourcing the keys for a decent price, in which case it's understandable.

    18. Missing avatar

      Eve on

I'm Vegan and would rather not be given a leather cover. I understand you want to shy away from too many options so might not want to offer a non-leather option. Therefore, please have an option to pick "no cover" as an option.

@Kevyn Gandaho Touchscreen will not happen on this KS project.

@ET3D They will be using BackerKit to manage the surveys - where they will get the information such as shipping address and addons. You woud be able to add the backlit keyboard then or extra cables / Side Smartphone mount.

    20. midnite

@ET3D - Good spot! And great idea!

    21. ET3D on

I see 'if we're close enough to $2.5 we'll try to deliver' as problematic. The problem is that at that point you won't be getting the $25 added. How do you plan to handle that?

Based on the survey you know that over 1000 people are willing to pay for backlit keys. So the question is, what's 'enough volume'? How many people do you need to make the three SKU's practical? If you can tell that, and it's a practical number, then I'm sure that people will be willing to pledge the extra $25 to make sure it happens. It will be even more of an assurance for you than getting to $2.5m, will make those who want backlit keys happier, and will make it more likely that the backlit version happens.

A 1080p touch screen would be really cool on this device.

    23. Andreas Hencke on

That's a deal I can live with. I want 1080p but I'm unsure wether I want Backlit Keys or not.

I like the new arrangement but I still think that $25 for a backlit keyboard is a bit much. All in all a better arrangement.

    26. Bob S. on

Aw, so 74% like backlit keys and 26% don't, so 26% win. I accept that you made your decision, but hope you make the right one in the next campaign. ;) But the original Superbook as specced was good enough to back, so I'll probably just get that instead.

I also don't want the sleeve if it is genuine leather.

I have a sleeve for my baby laptop that is some kind of soft flexible synthetic material, very nice. The material might be Neoprene.

My main reason for wanting the sleeve is to protect the Superbook from scratches and knocks. So, the Superbook needs to be completely covered -- I notice the diagonal cutaway in the photos, I assume that is an extra pocket? -- hope so, don't want to insert the Superbook in it with part not protected.

Personally, I don't need an extra pocket.

    36. Jens Wille on

      .@Waistcoat & Watch: Strongly seconded!

Please avoid genuine leather. That's totally unnecessary. Otherwise, great job so far :)

      Rio on

I was extreme likely to have the backlit but 2.5m looks far away.. Hmm, someone knows where to find good quality glow in the dark stickers for the keyboards?

    38. midnite

I would definitely love to add $55 for BOTH 1080p and backlit. Quite disappointed about the moving bar. Just hope we can meet 2.5M.

By the way the 1080p backlit options are not free stretch goals. I wonder why there are so many limitations to "buy" those upgrades. As the survey shows, there will be 1000+ units for the upgrades. This will not be a small batch of each variation. The overhead should be able to be shared.

Anyway, thanks for saying that "If we don't reach the stretch goal by the end of the campaign but we’re close enough and implementation is viable, we’ll still work on delivering them!" - This is the very kind of you!

Last but not least, what does "Solid Color Skin" means in the new 2.0M stretch goal?

      Milan Shah on

This is a great decision. I'm please the complexity of the project isn't increased. It's important to get a successful version 1 out first even if it's basic. Once you've gotten experience, and a proven track record, you can always put out a version 2 with more bells and whistles. No point over complicating version 1 if it's going to lead it to a doomed failure.

    48. Andromium Inc. 2-time creator on

      @Waistcoat & Watch - 100% hear you. I don't think we can afford real leather anyways -_-

    49. Andromium Inc. 2-time creator on

We know there will be a lot of discussion on this. We hear the folks that were excited about backlit keys. We're going to hammer home two points: 1) this was the way that we could provide backlit keys without taking away the 1080p only option and 2) we'll still try hard to provide backlit keys even if we don't make it all the way to 2.5M.

    50. James Dasher on

Ach! Backlit Keys are a big deal for me, far bigger than the 1080p option (which I backed). I work in a wide variety of settings. Here's hoping that 2.5 comes through, although I'm seriously disappointed by the moving bar.
