STRETCH GOAL - $13,000 by the end of the campaign!
We've made our minimum goal (woohoo!) but there's still time left and so much more we could do! If we are able to get this additional funding, we plan to...
- Hire an actual publicist for the album release!
- Expand the album artwork to include an insert with lyrics
- Have my good friend Julie Vallimont make one of her beautiful crankie-esque videos to accompany my song The Deep Blue Green. Check out the Updates page for more details.
Hello friends. My name is Andrew VanNorstrand. I’m a musician, singer and songwriter based in Cazenovia, NY. Welcome to the Kickstarter for my debut solo album That We Could Find A Way To Be.
I've been a full-time touring musician for over ten years now. I've made a lot of music with my brother Noah VanNorstrand in different configurations including The Great Bear Trio, Andrew & Noah Band, Wake Up Robin and The Faux Paws. Together we've released eleven(!) albums of original music on our own Great Bear Records, hosted our very own dance festival The Groove and recently published our first tune book entitled The Long Flight Home.
These new songs focus on some of the things I care about most - the complicated intersections of love, faith, loss and uncertainty, queerness and the search and struggle for understanding. The music wanders through many different scenes that highlight some of the dualities of life in America; from the rust belt to the Blue Ridge, cold spring in New England to a summer's night in Charlottesville. The warmth of family and traditions, the deep blue green of mountains and rivers and gardens. The dark isolation of losing what matters most, having every assumption laid bare and no idea what's supposed to happen next. The strain of reconciling who you are with what you believe. The moment you realize someone truly means what they've said all along. Answers to questions you never thought you'd ask.
I first brought some early sketches of these songs to my good friend; engineer, producer and musician DANA BILLINGS about two years ago. We didn't feel a lot of pressure to rush it through. This material wasn’t written for a specific band or tour, or made to feature big instrumental solos. Instead, we tried to follow each song with as few preconceptions as possible and “discover” the arrangements and instrumentation as we went. Starting with the lyrics and building the tracks up from there. It was such a rewarding way to make an album! We brought on a small group of fantastic guest musicians to help fill out and define the exact sound we were looking for: ANNA PATTON on clarinet, RACHEL BELL on accordion, CHARLIE ROSE on pedal steel and KAILYN WRIGHT on harmony vocals.
As of right now, the music is actually done! We just got the final master back and the album sounds amazing! There’s still a bit left to do with artwork and printing of course. But here’s the big thing: I want AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE to hear these songs and to do that, we are working on putting together a radio promotion campaign and possibly hiring a publicist for the album release. I want to reach out and introduce myself as an artist to folks who may have never heard my music before. This is pretty new territory for me and coming up with a promotion budget is tricky because there's really no limit to how much it could cost. But I'm excited to be working with Biff Kennedy at the Charterhouse Music Group to come up with a good strategy and make the most of the funding we receive.
Hey, since you read this far... wanna actually hear one of these new songs? Here's the first track on the album, What Am I Supposed To Say
Risks and challenges
Y'all know how Kickstarter works by now, right? It's all-or-nothing crowdfunding. And every little bit helps: pre-ordering a copy of the album, sharing the link on Facebook, obnoxiously whispering about it to your friends during tense movie scenes, etc. This project is already pretty far along; we are in the homestretch! The funding we still need will go primarily towards promotion - radio, digital, press, etc. Also artwork, printing and a couple NEW VIDEOS! Staying on schedule and sticking to a budget are always big challenges. This is a simpler Kickstarter than we've done in the past and overall, I'm feeling confident about this project and can't wait to share these new songs with the world. Thank you all so much for your continued love and support!!!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
