Why are sunglasses so expensive? We couldn’t find a good reason either. While looking for the answer, we did however find several problems with the sunglasses industry that we think really needed to be solved.
• AFFORDABILITY: Not $300. Not $200. Not even $100. Our sunglasses are starting at just $35 on Kickstarter. By working direct to consumer, we pass the savings on to you with radical transparency.
• PRACTICALITY: We wanted to create a quality handmade pair of sunglasses that’s built to last, but could be used for everyday wear.
• DESIGN: They’re beautifully crafted for timelessness with a less-is-more approach, resulting in a classic minimal look that will suit any style.
We are a team of product designers, overseas importers, dreamers and marketers who came together on a mission to collectively use our skills to make a difference. Together we created Eye Gave, with the single goal of eliminating trachoma before 2020.
It's a simple idea: design a high-end pair of sunglasses, work directly with the factory so we can sell them at a reasonable price, and include the cost of a sight-saving eye operation in the price tag. For every pair you buy, you provide a sight-saving treatment for someone suffering from trachoma.
QUALITY & PRICE CONTROL
We believe high-quality sunglasses shouldn’t come at a high price. Don’t be fooled by the price tag, these glasses are of the same high quality as the sunglasses you see locked away in the glass cabinets at your favorite sports shop. We use the same materials, construction methods and high standards as the big names -- these glasses are made to last. We’ve been using and testing our samples for a couple of months now, and we’re very confident that they aren’t going to break the first time you sit on them in the car.
Because we have both designers and Vietnam-based manufacturing experts on our team, we’re able to work directly with the factory and sell directly to you. That means prices that don’t break the bank.

Made in Vietnam
Eye Gave and Sightsavers. Two different skill sets, one common mission.
We at Eye Gave are product developers, not eye doctors. Sightsavers will be doing the important work they specialize in: performing eye operations, dispensing medication and training locals to examine, treat and support people suffering from trachoma. Meanwhile, we concentrate on building a brand known for its loyalty to charities that do great things and amplifying their name and their work.
Sightsavers is an amazing international organization that changes lives for the long term. They work in more than 30 countries to eliminate avoidable blindness and support people with visual impairments to live independently.
What is Trachoma?
“Trachoma is probably one of the most neglected diseases in relation to its contribution to global suffering.” Dr. Anthony Solomon, Chief Scientist, Global Trachoma Mapping Project
Trachoma is an infectious eye disease. It is estimated that 41 million people worldwide, mostly women and children, have active trachoma infection and need treatment. If left alone, trachoma causes the eyelashes to grow inwards towards the eyeball, scratching the cornea and causing extreme pain -- and then blindness.
By providing these operations and treatments, we can allow people that are currently being cared FOR to care for others -- helping families function the way they should, allowing parents to go back to work and relieving the strain of having a disease in the family.
Where Did It Start?
The project started around four years ago as an idea that we could replace an everyday priced item - something that you would buy on a whim like a pair of those terrible sunglasses from the gas station - and do something amazing with it. As a team, we have used our skills to find a factory, design the glasses, create the branding, build the partnership needed to do the good, and bring it all together for this campaign.
We are far enough down the production line to set a firm timeline. If the campaign reaches its goal early, we will commit to the factory and "OK" the first sunglasses to be finished and shipped. We are confident that we can start shipping the sunglasses by the end of the campaign. We will be sure to update you on all progress we make and set clear goals.
Andrew: Design I have a passion for minimal product design. After an amazing Kickstarter campaign last year, I decided to use the know-how from that campaign to try and make a difference.
I have a passion for starting business that have a strong focus on making the world better. I now live and work in Vietnam, where I am coordinating the manufacturing process of our EyeGave sunglasses.
I have realized the unlimited potential for connecting projects with causes that help give back locally and globally. I coordinate our efforts with Sightsavers and manage delivery logistics.
My background is in marketing and brand messaging, and I'm passionate about helping businesses communicate their message effectively to help further their missions -- especially when that mission is for the greater good!
Thank you for checking out the campaign. If you have any questions please add a comment to the comments section and we will be happy to help. Even if you can’t back at the level of the sunglasses, please back at the $1 level to stay in-the-know with updates and follow the instructions to share the campaign with the world.
Getting a product ready for market and creating a campaign like this is a huge undertaking. We have to take some space up here to thank those who have helped us along the way. Christine with Moth To Flame for the video, Sanderson Bob for the wonderful branding, Robin King and all the Sightsavers team, Paula, Margarida and Aymeric for production wisdom, Anemi for the B roll video and Mr. Vi for logistics.
Risks and challenges
We have been working with the factory in Vietnam for over a year now. We have the first samples of the sunglasses in our hands, final testing and design changes have been made, and we're extremely happy with them.
We are now ready to go into production. As a team, we're making this our top priority. There are always hiccups along the way, but we do not see any major issues in delivering the sunglasses as promised. We will be sure to make regular and clear updates. It is our aim to under-promise and over-deliver. We would love to have these sunglasses being worn before the end of the summer.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
