Ecotones - an Anthology of Fantasy and Science Fiction

ECOTONES is FUNDED!

However, if we make it to our stretch goal of £2,500 ($3,750), there is an additional reward in store for all backers! See below for details...

In a Nutshell...

...this Kickstarter campaign offers you the chance to receive a copy of a new speculative fiction anthology with an ecological theme. Ecotones is ebook only and DRM-free, and will be delivered electronically to its backers on the day of publication, December 15th, 2015.

There's no risk. There's no challenge. There's just a great price on a great anthology, one focused on a subject of significance and with an unusual, admirable purpose.

If that sounds good, then read on...

Ecotones contains fourteen stories with an environmental flavour, be it literal or figurative, written by a mix of established and fledgling talents. Expected to retail at £5, all this is yours for just £4 here, less if you're among the first to get on board, and everyone pledging at Fast Reader level and up will be thanked by name in the book itself.

In addition, we're making our previous anthologies available at a discounted price, for readers who simply can't get enough exposure to new talent. Details are below and in the Rewards column, but before we get to that there may be another question on your lips...

Where forest meets field; where desert meets savannah; where land meets sea - these and others are nature's ecotones, the places where ecosystems collide and very different ways of life exist in tension.

Where the light of the last candle gutters into shadow; where the mundane gives way to the fantastical; where a planet's protective atmosphere meets the deathly cold of space - these are ecotones of the imagination, where anything can happen...

In bringing these stories together we've created a complex ecotone of our own: an anthology on the border between Fantasy and Science Fiction.

Ecotones is the fourth annual anthology to arise from the forums of SFFWorld.com, a site devoted to celebrating the best of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror, and where a supportive writers community has been thriving for nearly fifteen years.

Our members include novelists, poets and short story writers, traditionally published, self-published and hybrid authors - some best-selling, some just beginning their creative journeys.

Since 2012 we have been collecting our work to share directly with the world, each year's anthology taking a different theme (and all available at reduced prices via this campaign):

Twelve different takes on the end of days, and in some case the days that follow, featuring original stories by Hugh Howey, Michael J. Sullivan and Tristis Ward.

A variety of encounters both fortunate and otherwise, taking in ancient China, the weird west, an origami future and all sorts in between, closing with a striking piece by Mark Lawrence.

To commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the start of World War One, we presented seven reinventions of The Great War, including a reprinting of Elizabeth Moon's classic story of naval conflict, "Tradition".

As a testimony to the quality on show, one of the original pieces from The End has now given rise to a novel - Peter McLean's "Drake", coming soon from Angry Robot. More recently, a story from Wars... - "The Girl with the Flaxen Hair", by Igor Ljubuncic - was nominated for a Sideways award at this year's World Science Fiction Convention. Sadly the win was not to be, but who did he lose out to?

Funny you should ask...

The principle objective of our anthologies is to provide exposure for new talent, but as with previous years we've sought out the invaluable support of a number of experienced authors in a bid to raise our profile. This year we may have outdone ourselves, as we welcome:

Best-selling author of fantasy and science fiction, Tobias has eight novels and over sixty shorter works to his name, and has been nominated for the Hugo, Nebula, Prometheus and John W. Campbell Awards. His upbeat novella of environmentally sustainable revolution, Stocasti-city, provides an ideal centrepiece for our ecological collection.

Winner of the Arthur C. Clarke Award for her novel "Zoo City" (amongst various others), Lauren's flair for melding noirish crime with dark fantasy has made her one of the most celebrated international genre authors. Her story here, the bleak, oppressive short The Green, examines the compromised motives lurking behind the drive to attain new discoveries, and delivers a bitter sucker-punch in the closing moments.

One of the most recognisible names in contemporary speculative fiction, Ken has won the Nebula, Hugo, and World Fantasy Awards - uniquely for the same short story - and this year became only the second person to win a Hugo as a translator, of Liu Cixin's "The Three Body Problem". We are delighted to present his sourly comedic short, Compatibility, an original piece specifically commissioned for the Ecotones anthology.

By coincidence, shortly after coming on board we learned that Ken and Igor were in the running for the same Sideways Award. In the end Igor's loss was Ken's gain, but our congratulations go to them both nevertheless.

There's more to this collection than three stellar names. Our contributors hail from a wide range of countries and backgrounds, and have delivered stories every bit as varied. There are even a couple of "stealth" guests amongst their number, established authors who are also forum members at SFFWorld, sharing with us the fruits of their wisdom - and now their stories too.

To save space here, you can find teasers of all the stories along with contributor bios on the Ecotones website. With a mixture of science fiction and fantasy, comedy and tragedy, the action-packed and the thought-provoking, we're sure there's something to catch your eye.

Ecotones is ready to go. All we hope to do with this campaign is recover some costs before the book comes out - and get it to as many readers as we can. Our means are modest, our needs are modest, and our expectations are as well (reviews would be nice!). That said, if our target is met or exceeded, we know exactly what we want to do with the money.

Primary Target & Stretch Goals:

  • £1,000 : Campaign Succeeds

Advance costs are recovered - and we thank you! Next year's project just got that much easier.

Thanks for helping us to our primary target - as a token of our appreciation, all book-receiving backers will also get a copy of the weird western novella Given Names by the anthology's editor, Andrew Leon Hudson!

  • £2,500 : Semi-Pro Pay Grade

We were only able to offer our contributing authors nominal fees, which some have waived entirely. If we pass £2,500, all original work will be paid at a semi-pro rate of 2cpw - and we won't take "no" for an answer.

BONUS 2: if we hit the Pro-Pay goal, all book-receiving backers will additionally get a copy of Spire City: Infected, a novel-length serial collection by contributing author Daniel Ausema.

  • £5,000 : Professional Pay Grade

But if you don't stop there, neither will we. If we beat five grand, instead of a semi-pro rate for our contributing authors all original work will be paid at a professional rate of 6cpw.

Risks and challenges

I said it at the start, but I'm going to say it again anyway: there's no risk, there's no challenge, because whether this campaign succeeds or fails, ECOTONES will be published on schedule.

As you read this, all the work that needs to be done to ensure the anthology is ready to go HAS been done. We have the stories, we've paid the authors. We've edited the manuscripts, formatted the ebook and the cover art is done and dusted. The only reason ECOTONES is not on Amazon right now is because we need to know the names of our backers so we can thank them all properly at the back. There's just one thing ECOTONES doesn't have yet: Readers.

That's where you come in.

The reason we've published three anthologies before this one, and why we plan to be back next year, is that we want people to read these stories! Our contributors are in it for the opportunity to share their work with readers they might otherwise never reach, and our guest authors are here to help them do just that. Hopefully so are you.

The only risk is that you miss the chance to enjoy fourteen great stories at a bargainous price. The only challenge will be explaining yourself when someone else asks, "Why didn't you?"

Spare yourself that trauma! Back ECOTONES - you won't regret it!
