About

Welcome - Check In

I always loved the allure of those old neon motel signs and how they beckon you off the highway. For me, motels rekindle fond memories of family vacations, childhood experiences, and road trips. Pulling into a motel represented a sense of relief, fun, and excitement with swimming pools, soda machines, and getting to watch HBO from my bed.

In 1961, there were over 61,000 independently owned and operated motels in America.  With the development of the interstate system, changes to the tax code and the rise in popularity of chain hotels, these iconic motels are now a rarity.  But there is a new generation of moteliers that are preserving this bit of American pop-culture history and creating new experiences for the next generation to come.

To do my part to preserve this piece of Americana and encourage a new generation to fall in love with these icons of the highway, I have embarked on documenting 50 of America‘s remains roadside motels in a beautiful new book.

Sleeping Around in America: Revisiting the Roadside Motel  follows my 10,000 mile motorcycle journey through the United States to interview 50 moteliers and sleep in 50 different motels to bring you the incredible stories of these nostalgic properties.

I am asking for your help as I ride down the final stretch of this self-publishing journey to bring this beautiful new book to life.

Sleeping Around in America is an adventure story, photo-book, and travel guide all in one!

The stories and photographs in Sleeping Around in America give you an opportunity to rekindle fond memories of family vacations, road trips and childhood experiences while providing a roadmap of motels where you can travel to today.

The Motelorcyclist - Andrew Beattie

Andrew Beattie, Motelorcyclist, Journalist and Author
Andrew Beattie, Motelorcyclist, Journalist and Author

Motels and motorcycles have always shared a cheesy romanticism between the two. The mere mention of both conjures up images of iconic 1960s motels and James Dean. By bringing the two together, we realize a long-time courtship. So, to honor this marriage, I humbly submit the word motelorcycle as a new term in the lexicon of motorcycle travel.

With that I created and operate a very popular travel website The Motelorcycle Chronicles.  On it I have built a directory of iconic motels and great rides for other motorcyclists to enjoy. In addition to the website I am a contributing writer to BMW Owners News Magazine and frequent guest of various media outlets.

Before launching a second career in journalism, I held  senior management positions in the hotel industry working in Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg and Houston, Texas.  My hotel experience spans the gambit of working with limited service motels to full service luxury properties and various brands such as Venture Inns, Super 8, Best Western, Crowne Plaza Hotels and Resorts and Hilton International.  I have an MBA with a specialization in hospitality and tourism from the University of Guelph, live with my partner, pillion and pillar Amanda Anne, and have two incredible sons Alex and Nic.

When not riding or producing public affairs programming, I enjoy a good book, strong coffee, good wine, a good game of scrabble, and listening to classical, jazz and classic rock music. I ride a 2009 BMW F800ST.

Risks and challenges

The biggest risk is the timeline. I am aggressively working to get this book out in time for Christmas. However, unforeseen delays in printing, postal service may impeded the December 2019 delivery date. As an added precaution, I have factored in eight weeks for copyediting, however copyediting services are usually deemed to be four to six weeks.
