About this project

I am Writing my second Children's book!

Due to the positive response received from the last book I published in this forum, I have decided to create another one, with a similar theme of oceanic creatures involved in symbiotic relationships--this time about a sea otter and a sea gull!

It begins:

In the Pacific Northwest where the land meets the water, lived a cynical gull and an amiable otter.

Whose Friendship began one fog covered day, when the gull was on a log drifting in the bay.

"Are you lost Sir? Can I offer some help?" said a voice down below in a forest of kelp.
"Are you lost Sir? Can I offer some help?" said a voice down below in a forest of kelp.
"I don't need your help, you ugly furry beast," said the gull to the otter. "You really should leave me alone."
"I don't need your help, you ugly furry beast," said the gull to the otter. "You really should leave me alone."
"If I left you alone, that would be sad, because I could not share with you what I have." The gull replied, "And what do you have that I could possibly need? All I see is you in a pile of seaweed."
"If I left you alone, that would be sad, because I could not share with you what I have." The gull replied, "And what do you have that I could possibly need? All I see is you in a pile of seaweed."
"Its down below gull, that's what I'm talking about. What you can't see you don't have to doubt. There's a garden that grows down below the undertow, and if you don't believe, you might not ever know."
"Its down below gull, that's what I'm talking about. What you can't see you don't have to doubt. There's a garden that grows down below the undertow, and if you don't believe, you might not ever know."

Then the otter offers the gull some food from his garden, "Unless you have to leave urgently, there's an urchin here you can share with me, it's an acquired taste to some species, but it's thought among others to be quite a delicacy." Gull refuses Otter's offer and flies back to his home in the dump.

A giant storm arrives, blowing trash from the dump into the ocean, ruining both the home of the gull and the otter. Otter and gull must take it upon themselves to clean up the mess and find creative ways to remove the garbage while helping out other species in need.

Why Children's books?

When you write for children you write for the future. My dream is for the future to be collaborative, sustainable, peaceful, and filled with beautiful human appreciators of a natural world that is both healthy and abundantly diverse. I hope these books will also instill the awareness that treating our planet well and honoring the balance of life is essential for the survival of all.

Why Kickstarter?

When I painted my first mural in San Francisco, I did so by entering a contest sponsored by Precita Eyes. Community members were asked to vote by placing beads in a jar for the design they most wanted to see painted in their community. I think crowd funding sites such as Kickstarter and Indie Gogo serve this same purpose but for a global community and I am happy to play a part of this ecosystem.

Why the Sea Otter?

Sea otters are cute, cuddly and highly intelligent animals. In fact they are so adorable and amazing they have almost completely disappeared from California's coastal region thanks to a global desire for their soft fur. A carefully researched and accurate historical account of this beautiful mammal will also be included within this book.

Why $6000?

$6000 is a starting point. The more money I raise the more books I can create, publish and distribute. My dream is to eventually distribute these books to children all around world, but for now I would like to put all my energy into making "The Extraordinary Friendship of Otter and Gull" as beautiful as I can make it.

Thanks for your contribution and support!

Lets make it happen!

Risks and challenges

I already have a solid printing relationship with a reputable printer in Minneapolis, I was very pleased with their work with the last book. Unless we encounter any unforeseen (major) earthquakes, tsunamis or personally directed meteorites this book shall arrive on schedule!
