The Drone is a thought-provoking, eye-opening Sci-Fi that, through the personal journey of the protagonist, Leon, touches on themes of privacy, trust and responsibility. With the fast-paced momentum of surveillance technology, issues surrounding intrusion of privacy, and the development of a general consensus in our society, the film serves us a crystal ball into a future that may just be round the bend.
Leon is a highly qualified surveillance officer working for an undercover organisation. The work-obsessed Leon never makes an error in his judgment. However, away from his work Leon lives an isolated life, resembling the very technology his life revolves around. His monotonous, mechanic life, is engaged to change when he stumbles across the enigmatic Maya outside a gallery, who's world he begins to investigate with his drones. It is a world of intimacy and intricacy. The causality of what he discovers has the potential to either enrich his life, or destroy his career.
Telling the story through the minds-eye of Leon allows us to highlight not only the potential reality of our future, the effect of increased (drone) surveillance and it's effects on human spirit, but also a personal journey of change, of having ones ideas and principles challenged and shaken, and of learning to be accepted.
Trying to distill the many complex elements involved in creating this story has been one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences, and we are so excited to shape this story together over the multifaceted media of film.
WHY THIS FILM?
The concept for ‘The Drone’ began brewing in 2006 when director Raitis observed the fast-paced growth of CCTV in his hometown of Riga, Latvia. Realising the scope of this new technology and its consequences for existing social values, the vision for a film that communicated this in a way we can relate to began to develop.
It wasn’t until recently, however, that the relevance of such technology reached a point of public concern. Never before has the the future of our privacy been such a heated debate in society and across mainstream media. It's for this reason we chose a film that we knew would be both entertaining and insightful.
WHAT DO WE NEED THE MONEY FOR?
It is an unfortunate side effect of filmmaking that there are many different costs involved, each adding up to create a substantial amount. We are trying to raise half of our budget here on Kickstarter, and with your help, we can overcome any obstacle that comes our way.
A substantial amount of our budget will be going towards the production design side, ensuring we can make each set look authentic, and allow us to apply to necessary detail to the future we are trying to create, which without we will not be able to pull off!

WHERE ARE WE RIGHT NOW?
We have arrived at the crux of pre production, putting this dreamy Sci-Fi on paper and getting ready to go into production. We have most, if not all the prep done. All we await on is your help! The money you can provide us will push the production forward, enabling us to take this film in directions we can't even dream of, and opening up the doors otherwise closed. Your donations will allow us to create the masterpiece we intend on creating!
Thank you so much for your donations!
Just a small note that as we will be submitting this film to festivals all over the world, distribution of some of the rewards (such as DVD gifts) may take longer to arrive, due to festival submission rules.
Risks and challenges
We are certain we will face challenges. We are certain of this, having already risked a lot ourselves. Asking for £2,250 is a risk. Trying to raise that amount within this period of time will be also a challenge.
One of our key challenges is the securing of locations, as a large portion of this film is set in the centre of London, a key component in being able to market this film to a larger audience. This is an obstacle we have already overcome by securing some really exciting locations and venues.
Another risk we are really putting ourselves out on is that of the role of VFX in this production. In order to be making our digital creations really come and fly out of the screen, we need to be able to afford time, and the abilities of the most up to date Visual Effects software. This is one of those things that every large scale production relies on, and we are no different.
These are just tasters of the particular risks and challenges we may encur (excluding the usual logistical and time based ones), and a reflection of our methodology. It's something we are sure to overcome.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
