Hello Kickstarters! I’m excited to be here as I prepare for my two-month painting and printmaking residency in Iceland. This is my invitation to you and I hope you’ll join in!

During the month of September, I will be Artist-in-residence at SIM, the Association of Icelandic Visual Artists, in Reykjavik. I’ll begin my residency with a week of research on 19th-century Icelandic manuscripts at the National Library of Iceland. (Scroll down for more information about this component of my residency) I’ll deepen my understanding of Icelandic place as I explore words and language, and Icelandic scribal traditions. In response to my work with the manuscripts, and influenced by the landscape, I'll create a series of THREE hand-printed color woodcuts, the "Icelandic Arc" suite.

In October my residency will be hosted by Gilfelagið in Akureyri, in the North of Iceland. There I'll gaze upon the magnificent face of nature. I'll savor the profound silence of the landscape, and an extended period of quiet focus in the studio. I will spend as much time as possible outdoors, studying the local mountain forms, drawing and painting. ..and absorbing all the quiet that I can hold.

For the past two years I have been exploring Icelandic Place in my artwork. I presented an artist's talk to articulate some thoughts about the influence of Place in my artwork, to coincide with my exhibition Place/Process this past March. In September 2014 I exhibited my Iceland-based artwork in a solo exhibition North of Here.  This upcoming residency will be an opportunity to deepen my understanding of Icelandic Place by exploring the Icelanders' and my own love of words and language.

What you will get in exchange

Every backer will receive a piece of original artwork from my residency. I will only deliver artwork that is integral to my creative process, and aligned with my artistic values. Look below to see examples of some recent paintings and woodcuts.

Woodcut Levels $15, $25, $55, $150.  The woodcuts you'll receive will be created and printed in Iceland during my residency at SIM, in September 2015.

Below are examples of recent woodcuts:

Mountain, 8 horses, 2014, color woodcut, 16 x 20

Painting Levels $125, $450, $600.  During the month of October I will be immersed in the mountainous landscape of North Iceland. Asking questions is part of the creative process. I'll be making small mountain/light studies and acrylic paintings in search of answers. You'll get to choose from these paintings.

Icelandic Manuscripts and the National Library of Iceland

I visited the National Library of Iceland in 2014, and spent a day in the manuscript reading room.  It was one of the highlights of my trip, and I am looking forward to spending a week with these iconic artifacts of Icelandic culture in September, during the first week of my residency.

My employment as a rare book conservator and historian has fueled my interest in books from the past, both as containers for words and as interesting physical artifacts of the time and place of manufacture. The manuscripts at the National Library will provide a vivid connection to Iceland of the past.

The artwork and ideas that I develop during my "Icelandic Arc" residency will be the first step towards a larger goal: the creation of a limited edition, hand-printed and hand-bound artist's book. Contact me if you'd like to stay in the loop and receive updates for future projects.  I'd love to hear from you!

Risks and challenges

The creative process is an unpredictable path. I have an idea about where I am going with my artwork, but I'll remain open to the influences of place and experience.

I have a substantial inventory of paintings and prints if you would like to see more choices.
