DECEMBER 29th: Today our kickstarter project made its goal! Thank you so much to all of our backers who made this happen! But wait! There are still TWO DAYS LEFT! If we make over 20,000 we'll be able to afford to give even MORE love to the project for costs that include putting bread on the table of our talented team of web developers, flash designers and sound mixers, as well as covering the ongoing costs of web hosting and internet bandwidth, continued production travel, and festival submissions!
From the bottom of our Sticky hearts, thank you!
Josephine & Brittany
Welcome to The Sticking Place's Kickstarter campaign! WE, Vancouver based filmmakers Josephine Anderson and Brittany Baxter, are in the process of making THIS, an interactive film about Leah Callahan, a powerful, strong and inspiring lady, and we need YOUR help to finish 'er off and bring 'er to the world stage this summer.
Excellent question indeed. This is a pretty dang new format for films, documentaries, and choose your own adventure tales. Unlike a film you might watch in a theatre or on TV, you will be able to access THE STICKING PLACE at any time, anywhere you find yourself in the world where there's a decent internet connection. This format is pretty unique, because it makes films free to watch, and therefore accessible/available to pretty much everyone. To us, accessibility is key (especially when it comes to water, health care, and inspiring documentaries!). And, best of all, an interactive film reacts to viewer input, so you, beloved audience, get to actually influence the way the story’s content is presented! Each time you watch the project, you can choose to experience it in a different way!
THE STICKING PLACE will appear as a website made up of a series of web pages or “screens.” Each screen will tell parts of the story through a collage of media formats, including HD video interviews, old VHS footage, candid audio clips, an original composed score, motion graphics, animated photography and illustrations. As you click on the various active elements on the screen, flipping photos and medals, popping open video boxes, dragging characters around the page, the story comes to life (It’s alive! It’s in the computer!) It’s up to you to determine how much you want to soak up at a time. When you decide you are finished with a page, you click into the next one and so are taken through the documentary at your own pace and in your own style.
As an Olympic hopeful, Leah has pushed her physical limits to a level most of us would never think possible. She combines an intimidating strength training program with exorbitant amounts of running, stretching, tumbling, pivoting and a whole bunch of other really active verbs to get her into the kind of shape that is usually reserved for firefighters, James Bond spy types, and of course, elite athletes. Leah regularly competes in tournaments all over the world and has more medals to her name than we can count. As a consequence of all this physicality, Leah, through wrestling, has also racked up more injuries than most of us would ever think possible. Still, she perseveres day in and day out, shaping her life to fit and balance the huge challenges of an Olympic-sized dream.
Although these things alone would make Leah an interesting subject, the real reason we have fallen in love with her story (and want to share it with the world) is because Leah helps us to re-imagine her affair with wrestling and the Olympic dream as just one approach to leading an awesome life. With fearless self-awareness, Leah resists the easy to buy into, nicely polished, glorified version of the Olympic dream, and is always critically reflecting on her choice to compromise so much in order to compete as an elite wrestler. Through the ups and downs of her doubt, elation, breakdowns and revelations, Leah’s journey becomes an invitation for each of us to consider who we are, and who we want to be. Through this project, we’re aiming to have you exclaiming things like, “Man, I have been there. I have so been there. This is my journey too and I AM INTO IT.”
In early 2011, we began pre-production on THE STICKING PLACE. Since then we've filmed all across Western Canada and spent hundreds upon hundreds of hours developing the story. So far, we've dug into our own shallow pockets to cover costs. However, over the coming months, there are some hard costs we just can’t cover without your support. Our dream of bringing THE STICKING PLACE to everyone in the world via the wonderful internet requires funding to put bread on the table of our talented team of web developers, flash designers and sound mixers, as well as to cover the ongoing costs of web hosting and internet bandwidth, continued production travel, and festival submissions. In order to get this project to the finish line, we need to call in some back-up! And by call in, we mean ask you for! And by back-up, we mean money!
Our goal is to raise at least $20,000 on Kickstarter. Kickstarter is an all or nothing deal - we set our project’s minimum funding goal and deadline, and we need to hit this sweet spot or the whole dream comes crashing down around our non-cauliflowered ears. Please contribute as much as you’re able to! In exchange, we will create a project that will inspire you and others all around the globe, pushing the edge of innovation in storytelling, and knocking some serious socks off in the process. What else is in it for you? So glad you asked because we’ve got some sexy STICKING PLACE swag up our sleeves! The more you give, the sexier your swag gets! Who wouldn’t want a custom song written and crooned for them by one of Canada’s most talented female wrestlers? If you’re feeling super extra fabulously generous, you can even get an Associate Producer credit on the film!! Check out the sponsorship levels on the right hand side (---->) to see where you can fit into the picture.
Please spread the word to your family and friends, and help us get this crowd funding campaign off the mat (or on it, depending on your perspective). Sharing our campaign with as many people as you possibly can is crucial in helping us to hit our target. Every little bit of coin and word of mouth helps more than extranormously!
From the bottom of our sticky hearts, we thank you for being such cool, curious + creative cats and sticking with us through and through! We look forward to sharing THE STICKING PLACE’s progress with you over the next months as we get closer and closer to the official release date. Check back here for the regular video treats that we’ll be adding to the site, and follow THE STICKING PLACE blog if you’re hungry for more. (www.thestickingplacefilm.ca)
Did we mention that we absolutely love and adore you!? Because it's true! We do! Now, let’s go get ‘em tiger!
