Dear Tarot enthusiasts, and Dinosaur lovers - what could be better than a brand new Tarot deck? Well, a brand new Tarot deck with Dinosaurs in it, of course! Better still - a Tarot de Marseille with Dinosaurs! And here it is. A complete, 78 card (plus "Happy Squirrel") Tarot deck, closely following the original design of the 16th century classic, only now it includes full colour portraits of your favourite prehistoric Behemoths! That empty space in your life, and collection, is about to be filled...
Truthfully, I had some pretty ambitious aims with this deck. I saw, amongst my friends and fellow aficcionados in the Tarot World, two real needs coming up over and over again - firstly, for a deck suitable for children, but not a "childish" deck, and one which would appeal equally to all genders, and secondly, a classic-feeling TdM deck that would be a gentle and sympathetic introduction to the world of older Tarot styles for the Pip-nervous (and the frankly terrified...)
And then one day, in conversation with a poet friend, the subject of animal themed decks came up. Dinosaurs were mentioned, and found to be surprisingly lacking in the range of decks currently available. And suddenly, I could see them - Dinosaurs as those earliest Tarot creators might have envisioned them. The rest of the project followed astonishingly naturally...
I have been overwhelmed by the love and enthusiasm my little prehistoric creations have inspired in the growing band of loyal followers who have been with me on the journey so far, and hope that they have many friends yet to make.
I have paid particular attention to the pip cards in this deck, for the benefit of beginners of ALL ages. Whilst not completely pictorial, like the RWS cards so many of us are familiar with, each card, based on an authentic 16th century pattern, has been invaded by prehistoric beasties in all kinds of situations, to help guide us amiably through the thicket of possible meanings. I have retained the best-known allocations of Elements to Suits - Batons/Wands (or Fossils) are Fire, and are represented by Carnivorous Dinos, Deniers/Pentacles (Ammonites) are Earth, and are pictured as the Herbivores, Swords (Ferns) are Air, the Pterosaurs, and Cups (Crinoids) are Water, the Marine Prehistoric Reptiles. The Major Trumps remain as we know them, but recast in Saurian Glory, and renamed accordingly. A full list of Dinosaurs depicted - and translations of the Totally Authentic French terminology - will accompany card descriptions in the LWB - and, if funding is successful, the Stretch Goal of a complete, full-colour Guidebook.
Finally, I know how many of you are particular about card stock - and card size. Fear not - after a considerable search, I have sourced a printer in Italy who is able to produce decks to the quality I require. The cards will be printed at 70x100mm - small enough for littler hands, both young and old - on casino grade, sturdy ( but not too heavy!) stock with a pleasing eggshell finish that is easy on the eye, and to shuffle. The boxes are a luxury coffer style with a lid, much more manageable than the standard tuck box, and far more durable.
I can't wait to get mine!
UPDATE: ALL Decks, and books, will be printed to the same quality - there is no inferior deck, all are "luxury" decks with the nicest card and a gorgeous lidded box! People have been asking...
Risks and challenges
The risks are few! All the artwork for the cards is complete, the printer selected and quotes/time estimates obtained, the artwork has been scanned ready for printing - if the goal is reached, it's happening, and all you have to do is sit back and wait for your deck! The only ongoing project is final edits to the full version of the book, which is currently a possible Stretch Goal.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
