Pachamama: Mother World will look at the ritualistic similarities between two geographically different cultures, Native Americans and South American Natives. The division line between Ritual and Performance blurs, necessitating further research into the history of these Native American rituals, becoming both an anthropologic study and a creation of Dance Theater.
My work springs from my experience and identity as a Latina immigrant in the United States (permanent resident since 2005), expressing my heritage while embracing my new surroundings. The pursuit of historically conscious dance-theater, my own background as a native of Argentina, as well an increasing veneration for Native American Culture has inspired the creation of Pachamama. It will be a new exploration of Dance Theatre as well as an anthropologic study into each culture. Audiences will be introduced to ritual dances that were developed by vastly different cultures and will leave the performance with an increased respect for each.
I plan to focus on the Tehuelches and Mapuches Tribes from Patagonia, Argentina in contrast with the North American Tribes. These groups will be compared with the shared rituals of the Plains Indians, with a particular focus on the Eagle and Buffalo Dances. I am interested in the origins of these two dances and plan to compare their development and practice with rituals of the native Argentinean tribes. I will allow the research to inspire a narrative and guide me to build a hybrid movement vocabulary to serve my theme.
My work follows the principle ‘Emotion creates Motion / Motion creates Emotion,’ so I allow my feelings on a subject to inspire movements and gestures. In a move away from the purely spectacular and presentational side of dance, my work takes the opportunity to reconnect with the primal impulses of art and creation, communication, identity, and celebration.
