9/28 THANK YOU!!! WE MET THE MINIMUM GOAL!
STRETCH GOAL #1: If we hit $30,000 by October 4th, every single backer will receive an exclusive recording of "The Sea & The Shore" made during the recording of this video. AND you will receive it before November 1st!!!!
I had this dream a few months ago, while these new songs of mine I’d been writing over the past year were swirling in my head. The dream involved strings – violin and cello, a lighthouse and a stormy sea; Prospero and Lear, both aging and fighting the elements for the last bit of control in a world swirling out of their control; Juliet, Romeo, Desdemona all made mad by passion. The words of these characters met the lyrics of my songs emerging and something more than just another collection of recorded songs was starting to form. This is HOW TO SLEEP IN A STORMY BOAT. And it’s the most exciting project I’ve ever worked on and it's a dream of mine to make it. And I'm invite you into the boat, to help me get it to shore...
My name is AMY SPEACE. I have been a touring Folk/Americana singer-songwriter for the past, oh, about 10 years. I've made 4 nationally-released records since I began in 2002. All of those records would not have been possible without help from those who believed in me. My current label, THIRTY TIGERS, is a cool new model -- more of a "label services" company. BUT, like many indie labels, they are not paying for the making of the record. That is on me. And did I mention I make my living touring as a folk singer (folk singer = not a big savings account)? By releasing with Thirty Tigers, however, I will have distribution through SONY(RED) and the enthusiastic help of their amazing team who love music and are passionate about the music they work, so if we can make this record, it will get out to the world and it will be heard, but I need to make it first. I’m excited that this model gives me an opportunity to maintain ownership of my work. And now I’m inviting you to really be a part of the process. From the start. Not just when I come to your town, finished product in hand. And for that, I’m gonna open up the curtain a bit to let you in (I’m so excited to do so…)
FIRST, THE MONEY:
I'M ASKING FOR $25,000. Which, to be honest, is just the bare minimum. What I really need to promote and complete the vision for the project I'd love to see come to light is $40,000-50,000. But to simply complete the record and have the minimum of promotion, I need $25,000. I've already started the ball rolling and I'm working on sheer faith that y'all will get as involved as you can. If every single one of my Facebook Friends simply pre-ordered a CD, I would more than make my Ultimate Goal. It's that easy. But we ONLY HAVE 30 DAYS, so please come onboard now and tell your friends!
HOW I PLAN TO SPEND THE MONEY RAISED:
- $10,000 for the RECORD. The Studio (Mr. Lemons, East Nashville), Producer (Neilson Hubbard), Mixing, Engineering, Musicians, Mastering.
$15,000 for the PUBLICIST. We've got SHORE FIRE on board and they are excited! They are an amazing publicity firm out of Brooklyn who handle other artists like Norah Jones, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello & more.
So as you can see, $25,000 will ONLY cover the minimum costs. What I really need is for this....
- $5,000 for Art*, Photography, Design.
- $5,500 for Manufacturing Costs.
- $5,000-$10,000 Film/video**.
- $5,000-$8,000 + for Other Costs, which include Shipping, Advertising, Promotional CDs and Material, Radio Promotion and other Marketing expenses, Admin & Legal Fees, Commissions, Licenses, etc.
*ART: DUY HUYNH, an incredible visual artist based in Charlotte, NC, has come on board to create original works inspired by these songs for the packaging. I'm such a fan of his work that I'm honored.
** FILM/VIDEO: I've been in contact with some incredible indie filmmakers to put together a series of films inspired by the songs.
*****Remember: if we do not reach the minimum goal of $25,000 within 30 DAYS, your credit card will NOT be charged and the project will not be funded. No prizes will be sent out. And June, my old old dog, will have to go begging door to door...
P.S. Kickstarter also takes some fee's for what they do. Just so's you know...A % goes to Kickstarter and a % goes to Amazon, who help move the money.
HOW TO SLEEP IN A STORMY BOAT
These songs have been bubbling for the past year and I've been workshopping them at my own East Nashville Song Salon. As they lived in my head, a thread of a story began to crystallize and I realized these voices in the songs are people in the midst of great, passionate emotions, reaching for connection, reaching for permission to let go, to grasp on, to breath in that space where Joy and Grief meet in a beautiful lamenting wail. I realized that some of these characters were me, some were part of me, some were complete strangers, but many of them were speaking in metaphors I recognized from my years in theater. See, before I picked up the guitar at 25 and wrote my first song at 28, I was an actress, a director and a playwright. After graduating from Amherst College with a double major in English and Theater, I found my way to NYC to study at The National Shakespeare Conservatory. That led to roles with the National Shakespeare Company and other productions in Rep Theater, Off and Off-Off (and some way the heck Off) Broadway. I played roles in Henry V, Much Ado About Nothing, Richard III and became obsessed with Shakespeare. When my music career started demanding more of my time, I realized it was time to make a choice, and I took what has become a very long sabbatical from the theater.
I came to songwriting through that lens. I tend to focus in on the small gesture, allowing it to illuminate the emotion behind the seemingly mundane. These songs have collided into characters I know, I've read; they speak to each other. The framework began to emerge and I realized that this record could be a conversation between song and lyric and visual art and theater. Shakespeare, poetry, music: these have been my teachers when the water gets rough. This is, to me, "How To Sleep In A Stormy Boat": hang onto the sides, remember what you know and pray for a safe landing. I have never been more excited about a project than I am about this one. And I'd love to see the entire thing come to life. I plan to tour this record with my guitar player and a cellist and, depending on fundraising, I'd love to include film and art into the show.
