Hello there! I'm Amrit Brar, a Toronto-based illustrator and abysmal astrologer. I commonly publish zines (small, independent publications) under the moniker Musterni, and can typically be caught at zine fairs and small press festivals throughout Canada and the United States. You can find much of my work on my website, shop, Instagram or Tumblr.
Shitty Horoscopes is my most popular series to date, and can be read online on both its blog and my website. The series was originally started in October of 2014 in an attempt to satirize newspaper horoscopes and give them a ridiculous (if frightening) twist.
Originally, each twelve-page zine had its own theme, featured twelve different illustrations, and was released and printed individually. It has now reached a grand total of eleven volumes! The work has resonated with many people, with some amazing folks going as far as getting their zodiac sign's artwork tattooed.
Kickstarter, as a crowdfunding platform, affords creators and people who enjoy their work awesome opportunities to bring projects to life. By becoming a backer and making a pledge toward this project, you can get rewards such as DRM-free PDFs of the book, physical copies of the book, and prints depending on your backer level. Kickstarter backers are able to get the book at a more affordable price prior to its online launch since they're helping to fund the initial print runs. You'll also be eligible for awesome stretch-goal additions to your pledge if the project exceeds its funding goal!
Currently, the series is split into individual zines and can be purchased separately. The aim of this Kickstarter is to bring all of that content together in one anthology, and fund a print run of the book. It will contain volumes one through twelve of the original series, and a secret thirteenth and final volume which will only be printed in the anthology.
The Shitty Horoscopes anthology will be be printed locally here in Toronto and will be softcover/perfect bound, 6"x9" in size, black and white, and have a grand total of 182 pages. It aims to launch at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival on May 14th-15th, 2016.
TCAF is the Toronto Comic Arts Festival, held yearly at the Toronto Reference Library, and I will be tabling at the event from May 14th-15th, 2016! By popular request, I'm aiming to launch the anthology at the festival, as it will make it possible for local backers (and individuals flying in internationally for the festival) to pick up their copies of the anthology in person. If we achieve our funding goal, the surplus copies of the book will be available for purchase at my table, however STRETCH GOAL REWARDS will only be available to people who have purchased the book through Kickstarter, and will be mailed out in July.
As you can see, printing and shipping makes up the majority of the funds being raised through this campaign. The rest of the funds will be directed toward Kickstarter and card processing fees, shipping supplies, and any miscellaneous costs that may be encountered along the way.
All prices are in $CAD.

1. YOU MUST PROVIDE A VALID EMAIL. Preferably one that you check very often! Backer surveys will be sent out when funding for the project has ended. The sooner you respond to your survey and provide your address, the quicker your reward will be mailed out to you!
2. MAKE SURE YOUR CREDIT CARD INFORMATION IS UP-TO-DATE. If it isn't, the amount you pledged will be declined when the campaign's funding period is over and you will be dropped as a backer.
3. TAKE CARE WITH YOUR ADDRESS. Please ensure that the address you provide in your backer survey is properly formatted and spelled correctly! Incorrect addresses can result in delays in getting your rewards to you, or rewards being returned due to bad address. Your address will be used exactly as stated in shipping your rewards to you, so double-check to make sure everything is correct. If your reward gets sent back due to an error in providing your address, you will be charged for shipping once again, and that's no fun for anyone! If you encounter any changes in address before your rewards have shipped, please update your survey and beam me a message.
The Artwork - just a couple of illustrations that have been featured in the series until now.
The book - images of the first draft!
An especially huge shout-out to A.L Swartz of the Skullgarden Coloring Book and Wooden Tarot fame for helping to bring this campaign together, and to all of the wonderful supporters who have kept up with this series until now!
Risks and challenges
The largest challenge is acquiring the funds to proceed with printing. I have spoken to the printer, obtained a quote, and the art and writing for the book is entirely completed, so the funds are all that is required to get this project on the road!
On the off chance that the funding for this project exceeds my wildest expectations, I will be entirely transparent on the matter of any shipping or production delays.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
