About this project
What are inkimals?
It’s time for toys to wake up to design. Inkimals are 3D printed, collectible designer toys made in just three simple steps -- you color it, scan and send it, then we print a solid, three-dimensional version of your digitized work of genius. Each inkimal is fully customizable. Simply choose your favorite character from our templates and add as many features, colors and patterns as you wish.
Additionally, we’ve created a tool that allows you to design and illustrate electronically. With our backer’s support, we will make inkimals and our design program available through a web-based application giving you the option of creating designer toys and instantly viewing your creation.
How does it work?
Rethink how toys are made. Each lovable inkimal begins with your imagination and ends with a tangible, fully formed 3-D print version of your creation with incredible detail down to the tiniest brushstroke.
First, visit our website at www.inkimals.com to download and print the coloring templates.
Next, imagine a monster or a cuddly creature and start drawing. Use pencils, use markers, use crayons, use charcoal, use digital tools. GO NUTS! You can use whatever media you choose to create the texture for your creature.
Then, scan your design and send it to us. We use leading edge full color 3-D printing to produce your customized Inkimal right on the spot.
We’ll pack up your little buddy and ship right to your doorstep. After that, all you have to worry about is tearing open a box, popping all the bubble wrap and figuring out what your inkimal’s first adventure will be.
Each inkimal is made-to-order, limited only by the reach of your ingenuity. Make one or make thousands. Your inkimal is now ready to multiply. Send a copy to your friends or allow others to collect your artwork by featuring it on our online collection. Speaking of which...

One of inkimals’ goals is to make custom 3D printing accessible to everyone, regardless of previous experience in 3D software or modeling. We used our knowledge of 3D modeling and texture mapping to develop an easy-to-use method for accurate 1:1 projections of your drawings onto a 3D form.
Each character is designed with consideration of a parting line on its frontal projection plane, similar to the technique of a 2-part mold. The form's draft angles are intentionally rounded to maximize graphic space while minimizing the image's stretching and distortion.
Once you have finished uploading your colored template, our web app will process your image. Rotating, cropping and scaling the image into the correct format. After the image processing, a preview of your inkimal will be available to approve your artwork and purchase a 3D print.
Cast of Characters:
We’ve designed and made available four character templates each with its own unique personality. We certainly are excited to see your amazing creature designs, and yes, we’re even more excited to print them for you.
We wanted to make it possible to gift an inkimal for the Holidays. So...
Once our campaign ends and the survey is completed, you will receive the digital templates and order code for the creation your 3D printed inkimal. The templates and order code are designed to be printed out and can be given as gifts.
On our site, there will be a selection of pre-designed inkimals available to order after the campaign is complete.
We are aiming for a February launch of our beta site. You will be able to upload designs and preview the 3D creations.
Inkimals has been in development for the past several months. Here is a look at the process in creating inkimals.
What will the funding be used for?
We have solid programing and a great physical design that sets your creativity free. There still are a few things we need to do, and a whole lot we need to maintain.
We plan to add more character templates and perfect the electronic design function. Ongoing software development is critical, especially for building the application to support more users. We also need to generate support for 3D modeling and UX unwrap, the design of a simple and intuitive interface tool, and an Imaging SDK license agreement.
We’ve poured a lot of time, energy and passion into building the perfect platform that allows you to design and create toys plucked right from your brain. If you pre-order an inkimal, share our campaign with all your friends and help us exceed our goals, we’ll add so much value, your head will spin! Here are just a few outcomes and benefits we plan to offer as a result of your partnership:
Our initial Kickstarter fundraising goal of $15,000, on top of our own backing, will finance the costs of our initial run of inkimals. This will help us deliver them to your door by February 2014.
If you really like us and help reach past our goal, we’ll develop a photograph function for the web-based design application. You’ll be able to snap a photo of your artwork, automatically distort, skew and rotate the image to correct size and shape, and upload it to our system for printing. This feature is still in early development stages.
If you really, really like us, we’ll work on designing and developing more templates for your toy-creating pleasure and create a mobile device app that lets you design new inkimals from your tablet or phone.

Risks and challenges
3D printing is remarkable technology, and the fact that it’s now available to us, and you -- the end user, makes it even better. Our mission is to bring you brand new ways to think about design, creation and small-scale making. Despite its potential, this technology is new and requires troubleshooting, materials, programming and upkeep.
Which is why we’ve become pretty darn good at it -- we’ve invested the time and effort, conducted the research and training, and educated ourselves about all aspects of the market because we want to provide you with a quality product, expertly crafted, and delivered timely and efficiently at your convenience.
We’ve allocated resources to ensure that inkimals is up and running by the target date, and we will continue to overcome any challenges that may occur. With your backing, we will continue to reshape how you experience toy making, collecting and, of course, play. We are committed to this product, to exploring the endless opportunities of 3D printing, and we invite you to join us as we elevate inkimals to new, unprecedented heights.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
