Hey everybody! Amikaeyla here! I know I know...it's been WAAAAAY TOO LONG, but I've been doing all kinds of cool stuff like travelling around the world recording another album, moving to the west coast, settling down, & even getting chickens! Yet, BY FAR, the coolest thing that I've done is record my latest album. It's called Being In Love and it is chock-full of sonic delectables performed by world class musicians and incredible artists!
I've spent the last SIX years writing & recording with these amazing musical geniuses who hail from all over the country (and the world!) perfecting the sound which started out with the virtuosity of Trio Globo (Howard Levy, Eugene Friesen, Glen Velez) and myself in Bias Studios, located in Northern Virginia. We recorded diligently day and night for 4 glorious days, creating the core groundwork and laying the foundation for this album. Then I got swept off my DC feet and landed in sunny California ~ Happy, gleeful, and overflowing with love and the desire to explore all of the aspects and deeper incarnations of what it means to BE * IN * Love...thus the title! I am eternally grateful to all of these maestros for their participation in this project. These songs let me express a full spectrum of influences not tied to any particular tradition or sound, but grounded in all the beauty and love music offers.
Throughout this project, I've been committed to working with the best artists for each arrangement and it sounds great and feels great! For the last several years, I've been in and out of studios on both the East Coast and West Coast working closely with my new friends, the illustrious multi-grammy award-winning producer, sound engineer, and guitarist Ray Obiedo (whose worked with everybody from Herbie Hancock to Carlos Santana), and my amazing Producer David Belove who is also a multi Grammy nominee and renowned Bassist. We have been working tirelessly to highlight these acclaimed musical greats and round out the soundscape with intricate arrangements, lush compositions, and compelling instrumentation - making this truly the best album I've ever worked on.
The music for this album consists of a wide range of rich sounds and we recorded personal takes on standards old and new - like Better Than Anything, Lovely Day, and even a rocking rendition of Taking It To The Streets - with a distinctly fresh, new feel. Every tune was an invitation to collaborate with another superb artist - from the great Roots vocalist Linda Tillery, the amazing Quartet SF Strings, percussionist par excellant Sheila E. to the virtuosity of Howard Levy (mouth harpist and pianist for Bela Fleck) and everyone took the invitation seriously.
I now have a deeper understanding of why adding strings to classics such as Ella Fitzgerald's "Midnight Sun" or Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Dreamer" takes these amazing timeless gems to a profound, heartfelt level of emotion...and why all the best movie scores ALWAYS have horns and strings!
This is my sonic diary to celebrate love. This project reflects a commitment to preserving my musical lineage from roots to rock, and since love knows no boundaries, it encompasses every style. It's about the ways in which we love each other, ourselves, our community, our heritage and history. It's about a passionate state of being. Being in action in the world - moving and experiencing life through a filter of love. This is my personal take on just that. It's my second solo album and as a spiritual child of the 60's, I've been influenced by all of the sounds of that time. I created this devotional homage to such artful masters like Ella Fitzgerald, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Herbie Hancock, Bill Withers, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and all those who stayed true to their own expression.
So, as a music LOVER - and more importantly, as an INDEPENDENT ARTIST - I'm asking my communities near and far to support the BIRTH OF THIS GREAT PROJECT! The music industry has changed so much that unless you are the STAR ARTIST ON A GIGANTIC LABEL, you have to make all the ends meet on your own - which is probably the BEST MOST LIBERATING WAY TO BE but difficult to pull off!
Kickstarter, and other crowd-funding organizations allow artists of all types to ask for what they need. It's all or nothing, so if I don't reach my project goal, I get nothing and you are charged nothing.
AND SINCE WE WILL REACH OUR GOAL BECAUSE THIS COMMUNITY IS SO STRONG AND FABULOUS...:), all the support I receive will go to getting Being In Love out into the world. It will allow me get over that last financial hurdle to handle all of the back end costs for mastering, manufacturing, and promotion.
The GREAT NEWS is that WHEN YOU GIVE, YOU RECEIVE! You don't just get great Karma points, you also get GREAT REWARDS! Amazing, cool things that you can't get anywhere else...so HAVE FUN! CELEBRATE! AND GIVE! GIVE! GIVE!
Thank you so much for your support everyone! Stay tuned and BE IN LOVE. Enjoy!
